The term intimacy is derived from the Latin interior, which means inside. Intimacy is the superlative of this, the highest form of intensification: the absolute innermost. I like the idea that there is an innermost place within us as a place of retreat, isolated from the rest of the often noisy world, where I am completely myself. Intimacy is a basic human need. I think this is also because we live from within ourselves, i.e. from the inside out and not from the outside in. Everything may be perfect on the outside - but if we are not well on the inside, external perfection cannot compensate for this. But if we are at peace deep inside, we can still deal with many external disgusting things. Intimacy is also possible between people, sharing our deepest inner selves with each other. What a blessing and miracle that this is even possible. Then we can be naked in front of each other as we were originally without it bothering us.
