In our country, church bells still ring frequently and regularly. To the delight of some, to the annoyance of others. Some chime only twice an hour, others only on certain occasions such as a funeral or in the evening, and still others every quarter of an hour. The chime was originally a call to prayer for the praying monks and people and I think also a kind of public clock when wristwatches were not yet widespread. And those who had committed themselves to prayer and wanted to do so were glad of these signalling devices and could rely on them. Today, it's easy to ignore the chime, you get used to it and its sound probably has a concrete effect on the organisation of the day for very few people. However, external signals are always important in life, as is recognising them and acting accordingly.
