I sometimes have smudges or splashes on my computer monitor. The fact is, however, that if there is important information behind it, it is partially covered by the smudges - so I may not always recognise or confuse letters straight away. That's one thing: the spots obscure what I should be able to see or cloud my vision, so to speak. But the other thing is that they also draw attention to themselves. If a larger area on the monitor is the same, these spots are particularly noticeable. Both should not be the case: that they cover important things and that they attract too much attention and distract from what is important. Character spots, if you like, have a similar effect. They detract from the good and, if they are noticeable, attract too much attention. Fortunately, both the monitor can be cleaned and the character can be worked on. If you're ready for it.
I wish you an extraordinary day!
