At school we had line sheets or notebooks with lines. We learned to write with the help of these lines. Specifically, we could sort of prop up our letters, words and sentences on these lines and so our text remained legible. The lines helped us to make our text more readable for someone else. Not only were the lines helpful in aligning the letters, but they also helped - subconsciously - to keep the size of our writing fairly constant and even. On the one hand, this was nicer to look at and on the other hand, as mentioned, it was more readable and less strenuous for others. If you are perhaps bothered by certain guidelines today, remember this comparison. Looking at the whole, such limitations or guidelines - also in a figurative sense - can be very helpful. Not only for the whole, like a society or a company, but in the end also for the individual parts or persons. In the end, this serves everyone, even if it may sometimes seem a little stiff.
