Nutrition within sports is one of the keys to performing and recovering from training and competition. How we feed athletes cannot be overlooked and I believe we must view what we put into an athletes body for fuel as an extension of their training and competition. Every macro and micro nutrient that does or does not go into an athlete’s body is an advantage or disadvantage. It makes the difference between being able to perform at their optimal level or being a little slower, weaker, or even more mentally unclear than the opponent.
For all these competitive reasons and even more personal health reasons, it is vital that we teach athletes what to eat, when to eat, and generally speaking how to properly fuel and hydrate for success in sports and life.
Guest, Susana Melendez RDN, LD, comes on and shares her knowledge and experience in the world of sports and sports nutrition. She is currently the director of sports nutrition at Sam Houston State University and has the responsibility of teaching and co-implementing a healthy and performance based diet for atheletes to perform at their highest level. We talk about her experience as a soccer athlete at University of Arizona and how she got introduced to nutrition in a very abrupt way. We discuss what athletes think about nutrition, how they implement it, the benefits of proper diet for sports and school, the use of supplements, recovery, and how teaching athletes can and should lead to healthier diets in their non-athletic life. She shares recommendations, advice, and lessons learned from her time in the world of sports nutrition.
