My patient died (lessons learned)

There are certain things in medicine which simply can't be taught by reading a textbook.

Not everything follows an algorithm.

About one year ago I had an 80 year old patient who kept complaining of nausea and abdominal pain after having a cholecystectomy. The surgeons kept telling her this was normal following this type of procedure and prescribed Zofran.

Well, she eventually came into my ER and she didn't look to good. She became septic.

We followed the septic protocol - but she ended up dying.

Today, I want to share a very important lesson I learned... -
