Roman fifteen thirteen says, may I got up hope bill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him so that you may overflow with hope by power of the holy spirit. Our god is the god of hope, and he wants you to overflow with hope. So let's start our week by getting our homes up again.
Now i'm so excited about today because I am sitting down with one of my favorite authors ever. And when you talk about hope, this man builds your hope. My guess today is mark batterson.
K is a new york time best selling author and the lead pastor of national community church. And one of the things that I absolutely love about mark is he just builds your faith. I have read most of his books, and he's written a lot of bookshop, and every single one bars you up and builds your face.
You just believe more when you're looking at life in your faith through the lions of how mark teaches you. And today we're going to be talking about just that. How do you get your hops up when you've been discouraged?
How do you believe god were big miracles when IT doesn't make any practical sense? And we're going to be talking about his new book that comes out next week called a million little miracles rediscovered the god who is bigger than big, closer than close and gutter than good. Today's episode is part one of a two part series with mark matterson.
And I know you're going to love our conversation, so let's get to IT. Here is my conversation with mark batterson. Hi, mark. Thanks so much for here. Hey.
what a joy Christie. Okay, I GTA show you said .
that we are just IT chat before you time recording on IT you, this is gonna yb, make you laugh and Better year. Okay, this is just part of the stack mark. This is just part of the stack.
This doesn't even have wild goose shape for you. And listening audio of showing him a stack of his book that I have that I have read. I when I say I am a fan, I just saying that to be nice that's a polite that I just say to every personal interviews.
Mark, i'm such a fan. I have read so many of your books. I think wild goose chases my favorite. You've got a new book out called a million little miracles, which we're onna get into in a second.
But as I was saying before we started recording, I have so look forward this conversation because I have learned so much from you. So thank you for your work. Lets to start my, thank you for the books that you write. Everyone is so much effort. I know that i'm going to author myself, but thank you for the work that you put out because IT is personally literally changed my life wow.
Well, Christy, can I just then play add a little context because that such kind words but just take a moment to say writing is not a natural gifting for me when I fall called the right at twenty two um I took an aptitude assessment that showed a low attitude for writing. In other words, whatever you do, don't write books, don't inflict that on the world. And but aren't you grateful god doesn't call the qualified qualified called so Christe when I write, I actually take my shoes off when I writing because I feel like it's holly ground and and I don't just type on the keyboard I worship got about twenty six letters in the english alphabet so because I want to say thank you to the holy spirit yes, who has a way of compensating for our weaknesses and gats powers made perfect weakness. So um very kind words and I feel like uh anytime anyone picks up a book is actually an answered the prayer.
So thank you. Well it's it's crazy because I I had read um the circle maker years ago with the bible study I mean a million a long time ago and didn't know of you I knew the circle maker or more than a new mark battles said right like I know the author say I just read the books bible city well fast forward to um spring of last year.
I was going through a really no not yet last year i'm sorry, two years a spring and two years and I was going through a really, really difficult season. My listeners know this guy called me delivery ency spring solutions. After twelve years, that was really, really difficult.
Everything was good there. So IT IT was truly uh, an active obedience and and I fear and trembling at all that and so i'm in this watering the season. I'd god i'd been taken me on this journey y of showing me different signs and leading me down this different path of like this word would pop out to me on a sign, and, and, and then this would drop in my spirit.
And he was really growing me in prophecy, growing me in in experiencing him in new ways, his gromia visions. I never had visions before. Two years ago, I tried to have a vision because they were biblical.
And then god gave me a vision. I have visions all the time now. So i'm talking to my friend about this and I said, life with god is is not at all like I thought. It's like this wild goose chase.
I like, it's just this crazy wild goose chase and my friend goes, crime, have you read that book? And I said, what book? And he goes, there's a book by mark batterson called wild goose chase and SHE.
Since me, a Green shot was like, I have to have that book and I was hope so from that boy forward is like, I just read all the bark battle of books because there's a routh thread and and this is what I want to get into even when were talking about your new book, there's a real thread with you. And I said this before we started recording, that you just have such a huge face, that is the drum that you be in every single book IT. Maybe a different topic, different angle, but you just have such a big faith, and you encourage and teach others to have such a big faith.
And I feel like I really relate to that because I do have a big faith, even when IT looks crazy, your silly, stupid sometimes. So I want to start asking you for you, where does that come from? Like, how do you have that really big faith that just shine through and everything you do?
Well, thank you. Uh, in that child, good shakes. What a fun book.
Uh, it's an even 啊, more fun journey to live. I'm i'm telling you, everybody is listening right now. Anything lesson spirit filled in spirit LED is dead. Religion in its boring but but a spirit LED life will take you places you couldn't even imagine going.
And so, you know, I think Christie myself, confidence is actually a little bit below average, but my holy confidence is way above average because of too many miracles not to believe god for the next one. And and so I think the way you store the miracle is I believe in god for that next miracle. And so what happens is, and and let let me say this up front, I can move mountains.
You can move mountains. God can, and he can do IT with a mustard seed of a so what i've learned is that if we do little things like their big things, got to do big things like their little things. So, you know, I think it's just the mustard seeds of face that that i'm just a guy that that believes god's work, that he is able to do a measurement more than all we can ask for.
Imagine a courted is power that to work within us. And when you start experiencing those miracles IT IT faith, there's a rising tide of fate. And h and so you, you know, I i've experienced healing miracles.
We've experienced real state miracles. Um so you you name IT. And H I am gonna believe for IT. And h you know it's not named IT claimed. I don't get to tell god windward or how, but I wants to always have the fate to believe god for that miracle, and then put IT in his and see what he does.
Yeah, I love that. And even what you said a minute ago is is such a chAllenge for our listeners and such a chAllenge for for me, for all of us, you really believe got that much. And that's what IT comes down to do.
Do you believe in? I am speaking to you. listen. Do you believe in or not? Yeah, because if you really believe in, if you really believe that he is who he says he is, he could do what he says he could do, if you really believe what he says about himself in his word and what he says about unis word, then we should have more confidence than anyone on the planet.
We should be the most confident, faithful, bold, courageous people alive if we really believe god. And I think sometimes we just get so hung up. Well, I don't know if you can, don't know if we will. You know, what are the things you talk about your book? And i'm get the little ahead here bit you talk about how he's closer than we realize.
And I think that sometimes when we know that he's big because you talk about the bigness of guy, and I want to have unpack these sections of your book here, how he's big, he's close and he's Better, then we can imagine. But we we imagine that if he's so big, he's the god that can do these big things that he must not also be close. And we even kind of downplayed prayers like, oh, well, got, you're probably healing cancer.
So let me not ask you for the small things are going on in my household today. Your god, you're probably busy, you know, saving this start of the other, so you you probably are too busy to exercise in my life. And so talk a little bit about how we can hold both of these, that we can believe god for big things and trust them even with the tiny things also.
Yeah, well, I I think god is great, not just because nothing is too big. God is great because nothing is too small. So, you know, Christy, I think our biggest problem is our small view of god. So A G K. Chesterton said, um how much more of you there would be, how much happier you would be if the hammer of a higher god would match your small Cosmos?

God is bigger than bigger, doesn't he exists outside of the four dimensions of space time that he created but then flip the script um oh please take this personally. Uh everyone is listening. You are seen, heard and loved by god. Uh, there's a reason why he gave you a unique fingerprint voice print eyr int um fun fact you even have a unique sweat print. Uh the it's through the three hundred and thirty three chemicals that comprise sweat combine in a way uh that is absolutely unique to you and and I think this is a testament to a god who know the number pairs on your head has your name tattoo ed on the palm of his hand and um all of your days ordained in this book before one of them came to be he's the one who nat you together in your mother's room and and then on top of all of that every tear you said be at a tear agree for a tear sorrow our god collection im ous bottle because they are precious to him and uh and so that's true of each and every person listening so here's this god who is bigger than big and yet closer than close a transcendent yet imminent and partly this is something that is mystified the allotments for two thousand years and the truth is um we will never get to the bottom of IT even an eternity but a god is is that big close and that good yeah oh my god it's .
just amazing how so often we we can understand, IT alleges. But then when god shows us that in our lives, when he does something so personal, IT makes the hairs on our arms stand up or IT makes us feel maybe even a little crept down like we wanted to be so close and he shows that we right oh, you're so close. Okay, IT is mind blowing.
I could I put on my my dad yeah I have a um my wife and I just became grandparents so it's a new a new child my daughter mm um who had this uh this grandson but we've written a couple of kids books uh together wanted them is called god speaks and whispers can I just because I think all of us were either little kids or big kids, can I just excite the the very end of that little book because I just it's i'm going to trust the holy spirit here um so so here IT is the last few pages of that little book um above all else know this is true the god is singing all around you and what is he saying in that voice still in small that you might dear are his favorite of all and and so here's what I believe I believe that you are god's favorite Christie and and then whoever else is listening today, there's probably a sue and a tressa and a Laura.
Uh, you are his favorite. Now I also like saying this, so is the person that you like the least so let's be careful. But this is a god who is is big enough up for each one of us to be his favorite te.
I love that. I, I, I can't remember who said this quote. You may actually know IT. There's two quotes I love that are around what we're talking about. One is an infinite god can give all of themselves s to each of his children.
He doesn't need to divide themselves so that each may have a part, but to eat, he gives them themselves as fully as if there are no others. And so when we think of guy, we think him rushing out his time, washing out his resources, rushing out his answer to player. But I love that idea that if you persons listings every single person on listening for me, for you, mark, to imagine yourself as his favorite, and that can be completely true, and you can live in that truth.
How different would IT change your views of, guide your relationship, guide the access you feel you have to guide if you live not as just a Christian or a even just a child of god, but you're his favor. He wants to hang out with all day, every day that he loves, loves, loves to spend time with you IT IT changes so much our view of him. And then the other quote that I love this is a elisia with alias.
He said, if you believe in a god that controls the big things, you must believe in a god that controls the little things. IT is we, of course, whom things seem big or little. So what is little to god? What is big to god? I love what you said, where if we will do the little things like you're big, god will do the big things like you're little IT just changes how we view god, and IT changes how we interact with him.
But IT also changes how we view ourselves, and IT changes how we live our lives. And so, you know, one of the examples we talked about a minute ago was I got called to leave the company I was with for twelve years. I only did that only because I really believe that, because I really believed, he said, do this.
And if i'm going to be wrong, I want to be wrong because I obey too much, or believe him for too much. If that is even possible, then I disobey or believed him for tute little. And so I think that this this has real implications in our life.
It's not just ideology. It's not just how you think. It's also the decisions you make in your very real life. There are people right now listening work and and they are at a fork in the room, and they like, I don't know, I do this, this and there's the safe out, the print go out, the predictable out, the road that everybody would accept and understand.
And this make sense in all kinds of logical and and dollars and budgets and savings and connections and all the things. And then there's delicious ous called the crazy route, because, you know, god only does crazy things smoothly. He, he doesn't do predictable or practical.
He does crazy. This is the wild goose chase. Just crazy things. And they've got this thing, they have got this nudge, they've got this urge, they've got this persistent idea that just keeps coming back. They try to shut IT out of their money and and keeps come back. Maybe it's to write a book, maybe it's to start a business, maybe it's to leads our job, maybe it's to adopt, maybe IT is to just reach out to someone they're talk to in ten years.
They don't know whether this IT could be big, small, everything tween, but but they're at this fork of the road and there's this Russell in their mind, between the practical and the spiritual, between the spiritual and the natural, between the um am, I gonna look stupid and i'm gonna offend someone. What if, how will we pay our bills? Would you just speak to that person's in the road? And they they very much feel a pull in one direction, but they're feeling a little crazy and they're going, I wanna believe god, but mark, this is hard in my real life to make real decisions.
You make a look easy. IT is not easy. And, uh, let's change the metaphor from fork in the road to you're in a boat in the middle of the sea of gallery, in the middle of the night, in the middle of a storm and jesus says, come to me that the moment are, are you .
going to stay, play .
fe? Or are you going to realize that playing as safe as actually risky um because then you're gona miss uh the opportunity. And so you can't walk on water if you don't get out of the boat. That's the bottom line.
And and so uh, now here's what will happen um when you get out of the boat, if you start focusing on the winding waves, you'll second guess your decision and h you'll start thinking, so be be careful to keep your eyes fixed on jesus um here's a practical definition of faith. Faith is taking the first step before god reveals the second step. So what i've learned, Christine, is I want, I want the twenty five year plan. In fact, what we wish, we wish the lord of was give us this month or monthly bread, or Better yet, give us this year or yearly bread.
We, we want provision so that we don't have to trust that but the lord prayers give us as their daily bread and so um I I want to be careful here because I do think you know if you're gonna open a business, you probably want uh to have a business plan, something like if i'm getting surgery, I would like for that surge and to have gone to meet and actually gotten decent grades, you know um so i'm not making excuses like you have to do your homework. But we had no busy business going into the coffee business. So when we opened evenin's coffee house and capital hill in two thousand six like IT was just this crazy dream.
Um but we knew that that we wanted to create a place we're churching community across pas. And uh h we've been named number one coffee has a couple of times uh just landed the contracted museum of the bible. So if you go visit museum of the bible, you'll be drinking evenin's coffee and and so just a word of encouragement to entrepreneurs. S to anybody you have a book in you um it's always the first step is the hardest step.
