According to the tradition of the Ngobi clan, the village spirit, Munyolo, picks a new wife when the current one grows old. David's mother, Agnes, was chosen as the new wife to Munyolo, fulfilling a village tradition that brings blessings and prosperity.
Interfering with the ceremony could result in death or deformity for life, as the village believed it would anger Munyolo and bring misfortune to the person who disrupted the ritual.
George accepted the situation as a blessing for the family, believing it would bring riches and a longer life. He did not express any distress and even helped move Agnes' belongings to her new home, acknowledging that she was no longer his wife.
Agnes adopted new habits, such as smoking a pipe and drinking alcohol, which she didn't do before. She also couldn't eat certain foods like fish, pork, or chicken. Her life became centered around fulfilling Munyolo's expectations, and she gained respect and support from the village.
David felt conflicted. While he was proud of the respect his mother received, he was also saddened by the loss of her companionship and the restrictions placed on her life. He deeply wished for her to return to a normal life, which she eventually expressed a desire for.
David plans to build a house for his mother on a piece of land he purchased. He hopes to reunite with her and celebrate her return to a normal life with a feast, inviting all his siblings and family members to welcome her back.
David travels to the small village of Bunafu in Uganda to visit his family. One morning, he’s awakened by people celebrating a marriage. To his surprise, his mother is the new bride. And the groom? None other than the village spirit.
