I'm sure you’ve encountered toxic positivity a number of times you've at least seen those quotes on instagram about the importance of a positive attitude and being upbeat and happy ALL. THE. TIME. While that sounds lovely in theory, sadly, it's impossible to feel happy all the time.

Toxic positivity focuses on everything that’s good, happy, and joyful, and discounts anything that may feel unpleasant or trigger any form of so-called negative emotion. It's harmful. It diminishes our experience. Makes us retreat within ourselves. And perpetuates a cycle of guilt and self-loathing for feeling how we did in the first place. Every emotion is normal and valid. But we have the choice of whether we want to marinate in it or let it teach us and expand our minds. The only way out is through so if someone tells you to "just feel happy" or "it's not that bad"... don't listen to that toxic positivity bullshit!

In this instalment of The Midweek Squeeze I discuss:

  • What is toxic positivity?
  • What are some examples of it?
  • Why is it harmful?
  • What to do when uncomfortable feelings come up?
  • Some tools I use to navigate through unpleasant feelings.
  • What you can say or do for someone confiding in you.
  • The power of the word AND.
