How do you teach your child to stay on the covenant path and make and keep covenants? That was a question mother and youth leader, Sharla Goettl, heard a lot. Writing a book with help for these questions was never on Sharla’s radar but after repeatedly being compelled by the Spirit, Sharla jumped in and wrote Spiritual Resilience: Leading Our Youth to Go and Do), to add her perspective for parents who want to help their children be spiritually resilient.
In this interview, Sharla shares how she was guided to write about Nephi’s example of building spiritual resilience and what we can learn from him about how to teach our children. She shares how the covenants we make in the temple and the accompanying promises we receive from Christ give parents a framework to teach youth how to have more resilient faith.
Sharla also talks about how Nephi knew Christ had an individual path for him that was leading him to a better place and how each of us can have our own personal assurance of this as well.
To wrap up, Sharla concludes that “All the credit goes to Him.” Her commitment to the Lord and desire to help parents understand covenants and spiritual resilience and in turn teach their children is remarkable. Sharla’s thoughts in this interview are extremely helpful to anyone who wants to understand covenants more fully.
Journal Questions
One of the questions Sharla frequently heard from parents was this: Can I trust Christ with the personal details of my life and of my teen’s life? What areas of your life could use a little more trust from Christ? How can you turn these personal details over to Him?
What are the ways you have seen God fulfill his promises to you through your covenants? How can you share how you’ve seen God fulfill promises with your children or others? Act on the ways you feel prompted to share.
Sharla discussed reimagining “symbols of righteousness” such as the iron rod, straight and narrow path, and taking the sacrament. She shared that we can each seek for our own interpretation of what symbols mean. What do you think of when you think of “symbols of righteousness.” When you read scriptures, ponder and journal about these symbols, what do you feel the Spirit telling you they mean? Write your thoughts.
