  • State Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Assamese people stranded abroad will be given $2000.“Those who have travelled outside the country in the last 30 days for various reasons for attending seminars, exchange students, business related work and even tourists and are not being able to return to Assam as airlines have shut down, they will each be given 2,000 dollars in their respective accounts, “ Sarma said during a press meet  on March 20.“Those stuck outside can mail on this email Id, their passport will be checked and they will be provided with the money,” he added. Sarma also mentioned that this is an initial sum and later depending on the situation action will be taken. The Minster said that Assamese people stuck abroad can notify the government on the email id which will help the government to notify the Indian Embassy in that country.

  • After massive criticism, the state Election Commission has issued notification postponing the upcoming Bodo territorial Council (BTC) polls scheduled to be held on April 4.  Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Friday,  State Election Commissioner Alok Kumar said that the BTC elections has been postponed for an indefinite period due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. He also said that new dates for the polls will be announced later.

  • As a precautionary measure to prevent coronavirus, Government of Meghalaya has imposed restrictions in movement of public transport and to close all shops, markets and establishments from midnight of 20th March, 2020 to midnight of 21st March, 2020 to enforce the advisories and restrictions for containment of COVID-19.

  • Nirbhaya rape convicts were hanged at Delhi's Tihar Jail this morning. Asha Devi, mother of Nirbhaya says that finally justice was delivered. "I hugged my daughter's photo," Asha Devi said. "The beasts have been hanged."The  Hangman, Pawan Jallad who carried out execution of Nirbaya convicts said that  For the first time he was happy to execute four convicts. AP Singh, the lawyer defending convicts in Nirbhaya rape case used crass tactic to cast aspersions on the character of the victim. He said that one should ask her mother what she was doing so late in the night.

  • Government of India has launched MyGov Corona Helpdesk on WhatsApp for Indian citizens. People can now dial in and get answers to their queries related to coronavirus.

  • With schools shut as a precautionary measure against coronavirus, students can now take to  e-learning with the help of Government's e-books mobile app “UMANG” which offers more than 1 crore e-books, videos, and audios on all subjects from primary to secondary level. The UMANG app helps students to access books and study materials using e-pathshala.

  • Passengers, who arrived in Delhi from Spain, have complained about lack of hygiene in quarantine facility in Dwarka where they were put up for a while for trial treatment and protocols. Currently, a couple named Mrinal Sabharwal and his wife Shelly Dhingra who were vacationing in  Western Europe flew back to New Delhi on March 16 due to the ongoing pandemic. Later the duo was taken to the quarantine center in city limit which surprisingly came out to be former police barracks that had been converted into a quarantine center for only 24 hours. Their center was surrounded by police officers and no single medic was present, the couple told media. The toilets were flooded and the bedsheets were stained. There weren’t even separate dorms for men and women. Over 200 people were expected to be housed at the quarantine facility, which had only three toilets, according to reports.

  • Legendary footballer PK Banerjee passed away at a Kolkata hospital today. He was 83. He was suffering from prolonged illness. He breathed his last at 12:40 pm, claimed a family member.
