• Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal announced Rs 75 crore corpus Fund for Assam Sahitya Sabha which includes 22 indigenous apex literary bodies. The CM met representatives of Asam Sahitya Sabha and various indigenous Sahitya Sabhas in Guwahati. For now, the government will provide Corpus Fund of Rs 10 crore to Assam Sahitya Sabha, Rs 5 crore to Bodo Sahitya Sabha and Rs 3 crore to other indigenous Sahitya Sabhas of the state. Under the Bhasha Gaurav Achoni, the government will encourage 1,000 new authors from different communities of Assam by providing them Rs 50,000 as one-time financial assistance.
• The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department organised a two-day training programme on poultry farming for skill development of the stakeholder farmers of Hailakandi district. As many as 39 farmers were oriented on different aspects of poultry and duck farming, namely feeding, management, health care, with focus on entrepreneurship development.
• During the intervening nights of December 30 and 31, BSF troops deployed at border outposts in Jaintia Hills and East Khasi Hills districts of Meghalaya seized 180 cattle worth Rs 23.16 lakh. These cattle were to be smuggled from India to Bangladesh. The above operations were carried out on intelligence inputs. The smugglers tried to exploit the unfenced area but the vigilant BSF jawans foiled their attempts.
• Troops of Guwahati Frontier of Border Security Force carried out a joint operation for the destruction of illegal cultivation of hemp in the bordering area of Dinhata (Coochbehar). During the operations, 64 patches of cultivated land consisting of approximately 43000 plants of hemp were destroyed.
• Last night a few unknown miscreants vandalized All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) office in Rupohi under Baksa District. The miscreants burned down all important officials’ documents and destroyed television and furniture. Those in the office somehow managed to escape from the spot.
• This year onward passengers travelling by trains will have to shell out more for their travels. Indian railways revised passenger fares over non-suburban sections. There will be no change over suburban fare and season tickets. The increase in fare is applicable only for tickets bought on or after January 1, 2020, informed the railways in a statement.
• 2020 promises to be an uplifting year for the Indian Space landscape. Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman K. Sivan informed that India's next moon mission, Chandrayaan-3 has been approved by the government. The launch may shift to next year. Four astronauts will begin training for crewed orbital spacecraft Gaganyaan in Russia this January.
• Prevention of Money Laundering Act court in Mumbai has allowed banks which had lent money to fugitive liquor baron Vijay Mallya to utilize his seized assets. As many as twelve state-owned banks had petitioned for ex-billionaire Vijay Mallya to be declared bankrupt over 1.15 billion pounds in unpaid debts.
