  • All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and All Assam Mottock Yuva Chatra Sanmilan (Tinsukia District) supported by other indigenous organizations launched ‘Gana Hunkar’ programme against Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 on Friday. Under the aegis of All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU), Chowdang Jatiya Parishad, Artistes Society and others  staged a sit-in protest against CAA in Jorhat.

  • After successfully evicting thousands of alleged Bangladeshi encroachers last year from Langkaijan, a vast stretch of revenue and forest land of Karbi Anglong autonomous district bordering Hojai, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council carried out schematic development works around the region.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi distributed Krishi Karman Awards to the states at a public meeting in Tumkur, Karnataka yesterday. The state of Manipur bagged the prestigious Krishi Karman Award as the best-performing State in Overall Food-grain Production in Category-III for the year 2017-18. The award includes a trophy, a citation and an amount of Rs 5 crore.

  • Dates for the annual bilateral summit between India and Japan will be announced very soon,  Raveesh Kumar, Official Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs, India informed media during a press briefing. This comes, after the meeting between PM Narendra Modi of India and Shinzo Abe of Japan was postponed due to widespread protests in Guwahati, the original venue for the summit where the two leaders were set to meet in December.

  • Former footballer and ex-BSF Commandant Nikunja Brahma of Kokrajhar, who represented Assam in national level football tournaments, breathed his last recently after a brief illness at a private hospital at Coochbeher in West Bengal. He was 68 and leaves behind his wife, two sons, daughter in law, granddaughter and host of relatives.

  • Sri Lanka cricket team, lead by veteran pacer Lasith Malinga, arrived in Guwahati this afternoon to play the T20 Series against India. The three-match series will kick off at the ACA stadium, Barsapara on January 5. The match would be followed by two more games in Indore and Pune.
