Supreme Court has refused to grant an interim stay on CAA, instead it has asked Centre to respond to pleas challenging CAA within four weeks. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal requested the bench to put on hold operation of CAA and postpone NPR for now. The court said it will not grant any stay on CAA without hearing the Centre. A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde on Wednesday was hearing a batch of 143 pleas challenging CAA. Attorney General K K Venugopal, appearing on behalf of the Centre, informed the bench that the government needs time to respond to pleas that it has not received. Out of 143 petitions, the Centre has received copies of 60 pleas. The court also said a five-judge constitution bench will give an interim order on some 140 petitions on the citizenship law. CAA petitions related to Assam, Tripura will be considered separately.
The apex court has reportedly reinstated the woman staff who had accused former CJI Ranjan Gogoi of sexual harassment. She had joined the duty post which she went on leave. All her arrears have been cleared, according to the report. The woman employee of the Supreme Court of India, who was working as a former junior assistant at the home of CJI Gogoi, accused him of sexual misconduct for which the apex court held an urgent hearing.

An RTI reply to a query sought by Saurav Das, a member of the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information (NCPRI), under the “life and liberty” clause, has cleared some doubts over what transpired at JNU campus on January 5. The JNU administration had earlier claimed in an FIR that some students had entered the Centre for Information System (CIS) office and turned off the power supply. They had also damaged the server which had affected the functioning of biometric systems and CCTV cameras. The RTI reply states that the Centre for Information System (CIS) was shut down on January 3 and had gone down the next day “due to power supply disruption.”
India has slipped 10 spots and landed at 51st position in the latest EIU Democracy Index report which provides a snapshot of the state of world democracy for 165 independent states and two territories. On a scale of 0-10, India’s score fell from 7.23 in 2018 to 6.90 in 2019. Norway topped the list and North Korea ranked at the bottom of the list. Overall, the year has been bleak for global democracy. The average global score has fallen from 5.48 in 2018, to 5.44.

WHO stated that on 31 December 2019, WHO was informed of a cluster of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause which was detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of China. Itis closely monitoring this event and is in active communication with counterparts in China.
