  • Tea giant Goodricke Group Limited donated a state-of-the-art e-library building to Garuajhar High School in Udalguri district here on Tuesday. Initiated as a part of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme of Goodricke Group Limited, which owns Orangajuli and Nonaipara tea estates in the district, the e-library building was donated to the government-run school along the Indo-Bhutan border which is located 19.5 km from Udalguri. Built at an estimate cost of Rs 10 lakh, the e-library incorporates a modern building and two computer sets with internet connection.

  • The Women’s College Tinsukia IGNOU study centre (LSC-0403) has been conferred with the best study centre award for excellent support services provided to the learners and to IGNOU Regional Centre Jorhat during the year 2019-2020 out of 24 study centres under Jorhat RC. The award was presented during the 33rd convocation of IGNOU held at Jorhat Planetarium on Monday in presence of degree awardees and distinguished guests.

  • The state of Mizoram has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in India, followed by Manipur and Nagaland. A total of 21,538 cases have been registered in Mizoram since October 1990, when the first case was identified, state health minister R Lalthangliana told the Assembly. Answering a joint query posed by MNF leader Vanlaltanpuia and Independent MLA Lalduhoma, the minister said that most of the cases were found between the age group of 25-34 years. The minister also said that local bodies, churches, NGOs have been asked for help.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted pictures of him meeting and greeting people at ‘Hunar Haat’ in Delhi. The PM had tasty Litti Chokha for lunch along with a hot cup of tea. Pictures of him at the venue are being circulated widely through social media. He tweeted, “Efforts such as #HunarHaat have given a platform to many talented individuals. I met some of them earlier this afternoon…”

  • Binay Kumar Sarkar, an Indian crew member stuck in a luxury cruise ship Diamond Princess in Japan due to coronavirus outbreak, posted a video where he is seen singing ”Chal Ghar Chalen mere humdum” sung by singer Arijit Singh from latest Indian film ”Malang.” He also gave an optimistic message through the video.

  • With US President Donald Trump scheduled to come to India for a two-day official visit on February 24, a lot of experts are trying to anticipate what the visit will mean for India.Trump had said that he was interested in doing a big trade deal with India but he wasn’t sure if the deal could be done before the elections. “We’re not treated very well by India, but I happen to like Prime Minister Modi a lot,” he said, according to media reports. “We can have a trade deal with India. But I’m really saving the big deal for later,” he added.

  • A UK opposition member of the British Parliament Debbie Abrahams who had alleged that she was unjustifiably denied entry to India has now landed in Pakistan. Abrahams along with some MPs had met Pakistan foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. “Pakistan has shown an open approach towards resolving the Kashmir issue,” she said. “We are an independent group, we are not anti-India or pro-Pakistan,” she added. Abrahams had alleged that she was denied entry to India because she was critical of Modi’s Kashmir policy. She was deported to Dubai from Delhi airport.

  • Oscar-winning film producer Guneet Monga says that one should understand the process and be well versed with the business if they expect to be close to the final round of the much-celebrated film awards ceremony. This year, the South Korean film “Parasite” swept the Oscars winning Best Film, Best Director as well as Best International Feature Film among other Oscars, while India’s entry “Gully Boy” couldn’t even make it to the final list of nominees in the last-mentioned category.
