Aligning health span with lifespan ensures we live with vitality, energy, and connection, rather than with disability, disease, or dis-ease. It means living well and independently throughout our years, not just surviving longer.
The five longevity switches are: removing toxins, adding prana (life force energy), moving prana, syncing with nature, and nourishing the system.
Ayurveda views aging as a transition into wisdomhood, a time of empowerment and increased importance in family and community. In contrast, Western culture often portrays aging as a period of decline, with images of frailty and dependence.
The two main focuses are increasing cellular repair and reducing inflammation. These work together to nourish the tissues and support longevity.
The nine mechanisms are: genetic or DNA damage, telomere shortening, epigenetic changes, protein damage, degeneration, dysregulated nutrient sensing, mitochondrial dysfunction, senescent cells, and inflammation.
A toxic relationship causes stress, triggering the release of stress hormones like cortisol. Chronic stress responses can lead to health issues, as the body is not designed to be in a constant state of stress.
The three quick wins are: fasting overnight (12 hours without eating), getting natural sunlight in the morning, and practicing meditation or mindful breathing to reduce stress.
Prana is life force energy derived from air, sunlight, and water. It is essential for our health and vitality, as these elements are critical for our physiological functioning.
Syncing with nature, especially through circadian rhythms, helps regulate hormones like melatonin and cortisol, which control sleep and wake cycles. Living in harmony with natural cycles improves overall health and reduces chronic illness.
Autophagy is the body's natural process of cleaning up old cellular debris and damaged parts. By fasting overnight, we kickstart autophagy, which reduces inflammation and supports cellular repair.
