Val McDermid argues that referendums have had a devastating effect on our political system.
"I am by nature an optimist", she writes. "But I'm really struggling here. We've broken our democracy. I don't know how to fix it and I'm afraid nobody else does either". She says the bottom line is that our political system isn't designed for the polarization that referendums inevitably bring.
