Two thousand years ago, Rome was the biggest city in the world. Life in Ancient Rome was different from Rome today. But was the food different too?
Roman Food
Romans usually ate bread, cheese, eggs, vegetables, fruit and nuts. They also ate meat, like chicken and fish, but not very much. They used lots of honey and vinegar when cooking because they liked sweet and sour foods. Most food was boiled or fried, but sometimes they grilled sausages. So ancient Romans ate similar things to modern Romans. However, they didn’t have tomatoes or ice cream, and they often ate with their fingers. Also, carrots weren’t orange in Ancient Rome; they were purple!
