Disclaimer: This episode contains discussion about drug, alcohol use, sexual abuse, and addiction.

The topic of addiction is rather taboo in Asian culture, so it is often unaddressed and misunderstood. Many people are unaware, uneducated, unprepared, and suffer alone. Research has found that Asian-Americans between 18 and 25 drank heavily although they were considered a “low-risk group” with alcohol abuse, and that 14% of Asian-Americans or Pacific Islanders between 18 to 25 need substance abuse treatment — which is only slightly lower than the 21% average of other ethnic groups.

September was National Recovery Month, and we were lucky to have Yvette join us in this conversation. Yvette is a Filipino-American, and certified addiction specialist. Yvette works with AADAP - The Asian American Drug Abuse Program) dedicated to serving Asian Pacific Islanders and other under-served communities with substance abuse services throughout Los Angeles County. She’s here with us today to share her personal experience with addiction.
