Chris Claremont, the long-time writer of the X-Men, had ambitious plans for the series had he not left in 1991. He envisioned Wolverine becoming a villain, dying, and being resurrected with a natural healing factor and bone claws. This arc would have involved conflicts with the Wild Boys, the Hand, and even the Avengers, culminating in a final battle with the X-Men and Wolverine's acceptance of his mortality.
