I moved here with my wife and three children in August of 2000. What's called the Second Intifada began five weeks later. That was a three to four year period of suicide bombings, terror attacks and shootings. And I remember telling my son, "We're not in Kansas anymore." That's a line from the movie The Wizard of Oz.
And despite the dangers, it was really like living out Psalm 91, where it says, "He that dwells in the shelter of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." He protected us, and for my wife and I, even more importantly, He protected our three children. And since 2000, we've had the privilege of reporting on the front lines of Israel's history.
and watching prophecies unfolding here in the Middle East. Like the return of the Jewish people who were told by the Hebrew prophets that they would come back from the ends of the earth. For today's Sunday service we're here on the Mount of Olives overlooking the Kidron Valley, the Garden of Gethsemane and the Temple Mount. Two thousand years ago the second Jewish temple stood right across the valley from where we are.
We're at the site of the church called Dominus Flavid. It's Latin for "The Lord wept" and commemorates the time Jesus wept over the city of Jerusalem and lamented it did not know its hour of visitation. The Temple Mount is also where Jesus taught the people, confronted the scribes and Pharisees, and spoke about the coming Kingdom of God.
Well, I'm here on the Mount of Olives because sharing a message called "Chaos, Comfort and Courage in the Last Days." Two thousand years ago, somewhere near here on the Mount of Olives, the disciples of Jesus came to Him and asked this question: "What will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"
They were curious. And 2,000 years later, millions of believers in Jesus around the world also want to know about the end times. And many believe we are in the days Jesus described 2,000 years ago. These are challenging days, many times confusing days. And as we navigate through these difficult times, it's essential to understand what does the Bible say about the end times.
and how we can find comfort and also summon courage in the midst of today's chaotic days. Matthew, in his Gospel, tells us how Jesus answered that question of His disciples. And here's what He wrote in chapter 24: "Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, 'Tell us when these things will be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?'"
And Jesus answered and said to them, "Take heed that no one deceives you, for many will come in my name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled, for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet."
for nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. And all these are the beginnings of sorrows." And he went on, "Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake.
And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved."
And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations. And then the end will come. Well, today we see these signs. We see wars and rumors of wars. Here in Israel, the Jewish state has been at war since last October 7th, 2023.
with Hamas in the Gaza Strip and it now is facing a very real possibility of a much larger war on its northern border with Hezbollah. Both of these Islamist groups are committed to the destruction of the Jewish state. Further north, Ukraine and Russia have been at war for more than two years. And to the east, in Asia, there's fears China will attack the island nation of Taiwan.
We see earthquakes in various places. Last year we covered one of the most destructive earthquakes in history that took place in Turkey. Thousands of people died and the physical destruction that we witnessed there I can only describe as apocalyptic. Paul the apostle also described what the end times would look like. He said this to Timothy whom he called a true son in the faith.
He said this in 2 Timothy: "But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come,
for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power.
and from such people turn away." Paul saw what the end days would look like. Jesus also described it like in the days of Noah, again in Matthew chapter 24: "But as the days of Noah, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.
for as in the days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage until the day that Noah entered the ark and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will be the coming of the Son of Man." We also live in an age of sexual perversion and confusion when some people can't or won't distinguish
between who is a man and who is a woman. Some describe it just like the book of Judges, thousands of years ago when it said everyone did what was right in his own eyes. We also live in a time of unprecedented Christian persecution. In the past few years we've covered how ISIS and other Islamist groups here in the Middle East killed, tortured, and imprisoned believers in Jesus for their faith.
Many Christians in Iran, Africa and in Asia face tremendous persecution. And this year the ministry opened doors reported nearly 400 million Christians around the world experience high levels of persecution. And of those more than 300 million faced very high or extreme levels of persecution. Nearly 5,000 Christians were killed for their faith.
Nearly 15,000 churches and Christian properties were attacked, and more than 4,000 Christians were detained because of their faith. Countries like North Korea, Somalia, Libya, Eritrea, and Yemen are among the most dangerous for Christians. In Asia, two in five Christians face persecution, while in Africa, one in five are affected.
And then worldwide, when you look at the world today you find political instability, natural disasters, economic uncertainty, social unrest, and technology that can spread misinformation and disinformation instantaneously on a massive scale. The rise of artificial intelligence to some raises the prospect of a brave new world and raises the question of who's actually in charge behind the scenes.
Then there's the ability now to track and trace all of our economic transactions. And many wonder when the day will come, when it says in the book of Revelation chapter 13, that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast and the number of his name.
We also see the prophecies of the prophet Zechariah coming to pass. He wrote in chapter 12, "...the burden of the word of the Lord for Israel, says the Lord, which stretches forth the heavens and lays the foundation of the earth and forms the spirit of man within him."
Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people around about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all the people. All that burden themselves with it shall be cut to pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.
In our world today we see global institutions like the UN, the International Court of Justice, and the International Criminal Court coming against Jerusalem, as well as nations like Iran calling for the end of Israel. And this call for the end of the Jewish state is echoed by protesters around the world. Jerusalem and the Temple Mount behind me are ground zero for their ambitions.
Years ago I wrote a book called "Jerusalem". One of the themes of the book is that 2000 years ago all roads led to Rome. And now 2000 years later all roads are leading to Jerusalem. Jerusalem is at the crossroads of history and prophecy. And history's final chapter will be written here.
So the times here in Jerusalem and around the world in the days to come will likely be more chaotic, more challenging, and can even be overwhelming. Yet we have His Word that can steer us through these turbulent physical, emotional, and spiritual waters. They promise both comfort and His abiding presence.
For example, Psalm 46 says, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea, though its waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling." And later on, Psalm 46 goes, "Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations.
I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge." And in Luke chapter 21, Jesus said this: "When these things begin to come to pass, then look up and lift your heads, for your redemption draws nigh." These words encourage us to trust His steadfast presence and strength, even when everything around us is falling apart.
It's an anchor of hope in these perilous days. Jesus also gave us words of profound comfort in John chapter 14. He said, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in Me."
My Father's house has many rooms. If that were not so, would I have told you that I'm going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me, that you also may be where I am. In this same chapter, he also promised the Holy Spirit, These things I have spoken to you while being present with you,
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I leave to you. Not as the world gives you do I give you. Let not your heart be troubled, and neither let it be afraid.
And here's what Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians chapter 4: "But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.
For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep,
Therefore comfort one another with these words:
It's the promise of His return, the promise of Holy Spirit with us, and the promise that He's preparing a place for us. These all give us great comfort. It's also a reminder that our ultimate destiny is not in the chaos of this world, but in His presence forever. Amidst the chaos of this current age, we're not left without guidance or hope, even on a daily basis.
Lamentations 3 says, "Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions, they fail not. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, says my soul.

We just came down from Dominus Blavet down here to the bottom of the Mount of Olives, here to the Garden of Gethsemane. This is where Jesus agonized the night before He was crucified and He told the Father, "Not my will be done, but Yours be done before the crucible of the cross."
So as we talked about finding comfort in God's promises, we're also called to exhibit courage. And let me add that when I think of the end times and the rise of the Antichrist, I ask myself, will I walk worthy of my calling? Will I be strong and courageous in the face of persecution? Maybe you've asked yourself those questions too.
Yet it's something God told Joshua years ago and he's telling us in Joshua 1:9. God commands, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged. For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
This exhortation to Joshua speaks to us today throughout the millennia. Despite the chaos of the end times, we're exhorted to be strong and courageous knowing that He is always with us. And let's remember the words of Psalm 27:1, "The Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?"
At the end of the book of Matthew, Jesus promised us, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. So the courage we need isn't a denial of fear, but it's a firm resolve to trust in God since he promised he will never leave us or forsake us.
And that's what it says in Hebrews chapter 13. Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have because God has said, never will I leave you. Never will I forsake you. So we say with confidence, the Lord is my helper. I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?
These scriptures reassure us during these perilous times because of His presence we can face the present and the future with confidence and courage. In the midst of these days, we need to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.
The book of Hebrews says, Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily ensnares us,
and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and the finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." We can keep our eyes on Jesus by keeping our eyes on God's Word, since Jesus is the Word of God.
And the book of Daniel in chapter 11 contains a wonderful and exciting promise. It says, "But the people who know their God shall be strong and carry out great exploits." The Bible contains passages that many believe point to a great revival, a spiritual awakening, and an outpouring of the Holy Spirit during the end times.
And these are promises that at the end of the age, God will do great things. In Joel 2 it says, "And afterwards I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old man will dream dreams. Your young man will see visions.
Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.
and everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the Lord has said, even among the survivors whom the Lord calls.
And in the book of Habakkuk, it says this in chapter 1, and I love this verse: "Look among the nations and watch. Be utterly astounded, for I will work a work in your days which you would not believe, even though it was told you." So there will be a day when, as that also says in Habakkuk, the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
One thing he's doing in the world right now is leading millions of Muslims to faith through supernatural dreams and visions. It's happening throughout the Muslim world and especially in Iran. And in fact, many say even despite this tyranny in Iran, it's the fastest growing church in the world.
and we've had the privilege of meeting some of these former Muslims during a visit to Erbil, that's in Iraq. They came to a three-day Bible study, and four of the five we met came to faith through a dream or a vision of Jesus.
And as it says in Matthew, the completion of the Great Commission will take place at the end of the age. It says this scripture, "And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come."
CBN, the ministry of CBN, has that scripture above its front door of the headquarters. And CBN and other ministries have helped lead millions to faith in Jesus Christ around the world. A global evangelistic effort is taking place right now with groups like Empower 21. They have the following goal: that every person on earth would have an authentic encounter with Jesus Christ
through the power and the presence of the Holy Spirit by Pentecost 20:33. And in light of these momentous days we're living in, the Bible provides key principles and clear instructions on how believers like you and me can live in and prepare for the last days and the coming of the Lord. Here are some of them:
Stay alert. Be watchful. Jesus emphasizes vigilance and readiness. In Matthew 24 He says, "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day the Lord will come. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would have not let his house be broken into.
so you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect Him." Here's another point: Lead holy lives. In 2 Peter 3, Peter writes, "Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming." Here's another: Be steadfast.
Paul encourages believers to remain firm in their faith, especially as the day of the Lord approaches. In 1 Thessalonians 5 he says, "But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness, so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day."
"We do not belong to the night or to the darkness, so then let us not be like others who are asleep. But let us be awake and sober, for those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet."
And here's another: Encourage and build up one another. Believers are called to support and encourage each other as they prepare for the end times. This is what Hebrews 10 says: "And let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing."
but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day approaching. Here's another exhortation from the Word: Spread the Gospel. The Great Commission remains central to the mission of the Church.
Jesus instructs his followers in Matthew 28, near the end of his ministry: "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always to the very end of the age." What comforting words.
Another thing to remember, watch and pray. In Luke chapter 21, Jesus says, be always on the watch and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man. In 1 Peter chapter 4, Peter says, but the end of all things is at hand. Therefore, be serious and watchful in your prayers. And Peter said that 2,000 years ago.
Here's another exhortation: avoid deception. Believers are cautioned to be discerning and not to be led astray by false teachings or prophets. As it says in Matthew 24, Jesus warned, "For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you ahead of time."
Instead, we can strive to be like the sons of Issachar, who the Bible says were men who understood the times. And we need to be faithful and be wise stewards. In Matthew chapter 24, again it says, Jesus said, "...who then is the faithful and wise servant?"
whom the Master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time. It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. Truly, I tell you, he will put him in charge of all of his possessions. And we're encouraged to live with hope and expectation
Believers are called to live with the hope of Jesus' return and the expectation of eternal life. This is what it says in Titus chapter 2 and encourages us. It says, "For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people." And it teaches us to say no to ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age.
while we wait for the blessed hope. What's that hope? The appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. I also wanted to read from a book that I wrote, mentioned it before, called Dateline Jerusalem, an eyewitness account of prophecies unfolding in the Middle East. And this is the last three pages. And it really relates to what we've been talking about this time. And it talks about a love story. And it says this,
Everybody loves a love story. It's the grand theme of the ages, and it will be one of the main melodies during Earth's end-time symphony. From the beginning of Genesis to the end of Revelation, the Bible bursts with God's great love for His people and the world. It's God's love letter of His often unrequited love.
It's first a love story of his passion for his chosen people. In Deuteronomy chapter 14 he said, "The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for himself, a special treasure above all the peoples who are on the face of the earth."
Eventually, He used them to bring salvation to the world from one of their own. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." For the Christian, the climax of the age ends with a love story. Many Christians come to Jerusalem to deepen their love.
We followed one Christian group from New Life Church in Virginia Beach during their visit. For most Christians, it's a powerful and sometimes life-changing experience. One pilgrim told us, "When you read the Scriptures, you're kind of looking at it in black and white. But when you come here to Israel, it really jumps off the page. It makes the Bible jump off the page and you're able to really see in color."
You're like, "Wow, this is real!" This is really what our faith is built upon. And they walk in the same places Jesus walked, like the Garden of Gethsemane. In fact, this is the same place where we talked to those people. And one said through tears, "I don't ever have to be in the Garden of Gethsemane pleading before the Father because Jesus did it already." The other highlight for many is another garden, the Garden Tomb.
Richard Murren, who was the director at the time, told us, "What we do have here in the garden is a perfect representation of the biblical accounts at the end of the four Gospels." One of their tour guides says, "As you go through the whole story of what Jesus' life meant, what his death and resurrection meant, it's like you see the lights go on in people's eyes. They suddenly get it."
And I've had Christians tell me I've been a Christian my whole life, 30 or 40 years. But it's only now for the first time I really get it. I really get it. It was a real man, God in my place. It was salvation paid in incredible costs, but absolutely permanently established.
The relationship between Jesus and His church is another signpost along the way to the end times. It's a growing romance between a bride and her bridegroom. The Song of Solomon describes this intimate relationship: "I thought of that again on the house promenade during a wedding ceremony. I looked to the Mount of Olives and realized that's where Jesus will come for His bride. He has taken me to the banquet hall, and His banner over me is love.
the voice of my beloved. Behold, he comes leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills. My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Behold, he stands behind the wall. He is looking through the windows, gazing through the lattice. My beloved is white and ruddy, chief among ten thousand. I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine." And it says, "Make haste, my beloved.
In Eastern tradition, the bridegroom would leave his betrothed and go to prepare a place for her in his father's house. He left, but he promised to return. And this return is stirring the hearts of believers in Jesus around the world. It's a lovesick bride pining for the bridegroom and a divine romance played against the backdrop of a world in chaos.
It's an intimacy described by Isaiah where he says, "You shall no longer be termed forsaken, nor shall your land any more be termed desolate, but you shall be called Hephzibab. My delight is in her, and your land Beulah, or married,
"For the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married. For as a young man marries a virgin, so shall your sons marry you. And as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you."
I have set watchmen in your walls, O Jerusalem. They shall never hold their peace day or night. You who make mention of the Lord do not keep silent and give him no rest till he establishes, until he makes Jerusalem a praise in all the earth.
So the Christian knows it's not really the end, but a beginning. And it's not the end of the world, it's just the end of the age and the start of a new age with the one we've been waiting for. And that's why our cry is, even so, come, Lord Jesus.
Well, to sum up, the Bible instructs us to prepare for the coming of the Lord by living holy and godly lives, staying alert, being watchful and ready, remaining faithful and wise stewards, praying continually, and then encouraging and building up one another.
and staying faithful amid trials, avoiding deception, and proclaiming the Gospel, and living with hope and expectation, following these biblical principles, we can be ready for the return of Jesus and fulfill our calling in these last days. And so as we navigate these uncertain times, may we hold fast to the comfort and the courage that come from the Lord
who never changes and may we be beacons of hope and strength and shining his light in a world that so desperately needs it and we all have the privilege to live in these days and he has called each one of us to the kingdom for such a time as this
The end times described in the Bible are a time of great chaos. However, in the midst of this chaos, we can find comfort in God's promises and the assurance of His presence. As we anchor our hope in Him, we can exhibit courage, trusting that He will never leave us nor forsake us.
Please join me in prayer. Father, we just thank you that you really have called each one of us that are watching and listening right now to the kingdom for such a time as this. We were born to be alive in these days, and yet there are days filled with chaos, uncertainty. We don't know what's going to happen, and we don't know how, and sometimes we question whether or not we're able to stand in these days. But your word assures us
that we can have comfort, we can have courage in the midst of all this. And especially here in the Garden of Gethsemane, you showed us an example that even when the cross was facing you, you looked to the Father and you trusted in Him and you put your hope in Him. And Lord, we see what happened in your life. And now you're sitting at the right hand of the Father. Ever live it to make intercession for us.
So we pray, Father, as you, Jesus, as you pray for us, give us the strength and hope, insurance in these last days. And Lord, I want to pray for each and everyone listening and watching. Give them your hope, your comfort, your courage for these days that we're living in. And we ask this all in Jesus' name. Amen.
