Two coaching greats will collide in March Madness. Basketball Hall of Fame coaches Rick Pitino and John Calipari, who became rivals while each coached top programs in the Bluegrass State, will match up again tomorrow. Pitino-St. John's Red Storm, the number two seed in the West Region, blasted Omaha last night 83-53 in the first round game of the Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament.
After Calipari's Arkansas Razorbacks, the number 10 seed in the West took out the 7th seed Kansas, 79-72. Tomorrow, St. John's versus Arkansas. Rick Pitino ready to coach against John Calipari again? Renew a rivalry? The only time John, he was at Kentucky, he was at Louisville. It's normal.
So I've always had great respect for John. So we know what we're up against, obviously. I don't know where they finished in the SEC. If they finished eighth and ninth, what I watched today, I'm glad we're not in the SEC because that's the talent level in that conference is amazing to me. Rick Pitino knows an NCAA record.
