Basketball legend Diana Taurasi decided to walk away from the game a few weeks ago, ending her 20-year WNBA run. When speaking to the media at her retirement ceremony today, Taurasi admitted retiring wasn't easy. I am sad. You know, it's the game that I've played since I was seven. It's all the things that in life I always loved to do. And I also play the game basketball.
Taurasi will go down as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. In college, she led UConn to three consecutive national titles before being selected with the first pick of the 2004 WNBA Draft. She will go on to win three titles in Phoenix, and she is the WNBA's career scoring leader. On the international stage, Taurasi is the first basketball player to win six Olympic gold medals.
Heading over to men's college basketball, star freshman Cooper Flagg sprained his ankle in Duke's quarterfinal win over Georgia Tech in the ACC tournament today. Head coach John Shire called it a, quote, real long shot. Flagg will play in the semifinals against North Carolina.
It's not about being ready to go tomorrow. That's not the most important thing for us. We've got to see if we can get him right for this run that we can make in the tournament. It was courtesy of ESPN to flag the ACC Player of the Year and the favorite to be selected first overall in the NBA draft. He's dealing with swelling in his ankle, though the x-ray showed no fracture. The Blue Devils have won nine straight games and are projected as a one seed in the tournament.
And in the NBA, the Spurs can start turning their attention to next season. Guard De'Aaron Fox will miss the rest of the season with a finger injury that will require surgery, the team announced. Fox suffered the injury during training camp when he was with the Kings before being acquired by San Antonio at the trade deadline. It's been a challenging year for the organization, with French phenom Victor Wembyn-Yama being shut down for the season last month due to a blood clot in his shoulder.
