Former NFL head coach Pete Carroll is planning a return to USC in the spring, but this time around not on the football field. Carroll, who coached the Trojans from 2001 to 2009, told the local Seattle radio station Tuesday he's aiming to teach a course at USC in the spring and is looking forward to the new opportunity. After spending the last 14 years as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, Carroll and the team parted ways in January. Carroll said Tuesday that he is doing some consulting for teams outside of football, but refused to go into details and also added he's doing fine, has a lot of things going on and he's excited about it. When asked about the possibility of coaching again, Carroll replied, I could coach tomorrow, but also added, I'm not desiring it at this point.

The Detroit Lions may suffer a setback after offensive tackle Panay Sewell left practice Wednesday with a foot injury. Sewell, an All-Pro last season, was evaluated by the team's medical staff after leaving the practice field, but no updates have been provided. Detroit has a lot invested in Sewell. He was entering his fourth season. He signed a four-year, $112 million extension in the offseason.
to stay under contract with the franchise through 2029. General Manager Brad Holmes took Sewell with his first pick for the franchise, drafting him number seven overall out of Oregon in 2021. Sewell started 50 regular season games over three years and all three playoff games last season as the Lions advanced to the NFC Championship game for the first time since the 1991 season. The Lions will host Pittsburgh Saturday in the final preseason game for both teams.
Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto has officially retired from baseball after a 17-year career. The beloved face of the Reds franchise announced the news in an Instagram post Wednesday, including a video in which he said,
Votto also wrote a lengthy message to MLB fans and all of his supporters, thanking them for their help along the way. The Reds selected Votto out of high school in the second round with the 44th overall selection in the 2002 MLB draft and promoted him to the major leagues in 2007. The Canada-born first baseman who played every one of his big league seasons with Cincinnati ends his career as a six-time All-Star, NL MVP, NL Hank Aaron Award, and Gold Glove Award winner.
