It started with a backpack that contained a bomb. The target? The 1996 Summer Olympics. There was steel hitting people. We were rushing people to medical. I saw my mother on the ground. I got up and I ran. The day started with Katie Couric hailing Richard Jewell a savior. But by the end of the day, Jewell was a possible suspect.
While the media and the FBI focused on the wrong suspect, a serial bomber planned his next, more overtly political attacks: two abortion clinics and a lesbian bar. We were rocked by a flash and a loud boom. Where were you in the building and where was the explosion? Everybody get back! No one has claimed credit for these explosions. Suddenly Atlanta's mayor thinks his city might be in the sights of what he calls a "deranged killer."
As the authorities embarked on what would become a years-long manhunt, the victims of these attacks were left to pick up the pieces. And the country found itself facing down a long and brutal reckoning with a frightening and growing threat. Far-right, homegrown religious terrorism. We will track them down. We will bring them to justice. We will see that they are punished. From Tenderfoot TV and iHeart Podcasts, I'm Cole Acasio, and this is Flashpoint.
