We are currently on episode 8 of Anna's Guide, and the more that I sit here, the more I wish that I had a jingle as an intro to these episodes. Like, ba-da-ba-ba-ba, it's Anna's Guide. That's not sponsored or affiliated with any of the... I don't know who you thought that was. It's not what you thought. It's Anna's Guide. I mean...

Anyway, welcome to Anna's Guide. I'm so happy you're here. Guys, another episode in the books and this one is a topic that is near and dear to my heart because I love what we're talking about today. I love the activity that we're talking about today and I...

We're actually going to start with a little teaser for this episode. I'm just going to give you a couple hints, and I want you guys to make some guesses at what you think this is. When I was in high school, my senior year, you could vote for kids in your class to be awarded these things called mock awards. And so they had stuff like class flirt or everybody's buddy or most likely to succeed or most likely to be on a TV show. I'm going to give you five seconds.

You know what's funny? This feels like a classroom activity, which is also on brand. I'm going to give you five seconds to brainstorm what you think mine were. I had two. That's a hint. Time's up. Teacher's pet most organized. Thank you. Stop. No. Listen. Welcome to Anna's Guide to Going Back to School. And I'm your teacher, Anna. Class is in fucking session, people.

The peanut gallery off camera keeps giggling at me, which makes me feel very validated in my concerns about being teacher's pet. Most organized. Um, listen. The seasons are changing. You may not feel it, but look at my fucking sweater. I've sworn twice in this episode. I need to cool it. My sweater is knitted. Los Angeles is hot. Pumpkin spice is in my fridge.

And I can't wait to act like a thot. I mean, I'm so excited for this season. We're going back to school and I'm not going back to school. I wish I was. This is so hectic, guys. What is going on right now? Listen, listen. Welcome to Anna's Guide to Going Back to School. It's the fall. Whether you feel it or not, summer is coming to a close and I could not be more overjoyed. I'm a summer girly, but the second that I feel that crisp air start to hit my bones, I'm

I think that's how I know I'm a Midwest girl at heart. I get a little bit sad when I look outside in the fall and I see all the girls who have yellow leaves and like we still have palm trees. Never going to complain. I don't have to experience another winter in my life. But I do from time to time miss the season of the school year. And whether or not you're in school anymore, I think we can all agree that when September starts to roll around, it's like, oh, yeah, it's back to school season.

I've been out of school for like five years, but it still counts in my brain. And I'm still so looking forward to getting my fresh planner and my new little pencils that I'll probably lose the second week of school and all the things that bring me joy. Like the binders that are the certain colors that go with the certain topics where I think like, I think I did math was red. Science was green. History was blue. Politics was yellow. English was yellow.

Maybe English was blue. I don't know. But everything has a color coordination. Everything has a rhythm. Everything has a pace. And what's even more important is so do you. So welcome to Anna's Guide to Going Back to School. And before we get really deep in that topic, even though you can tell I'm very passionate about it and very excited to be here, just like I'm happy that you're here, first we're going to do our rosebud thorn, which Anna's rosebud thorn this week, guys. Okay.

I feel like all of these could be thorns, but I'm going to treat them like I just talked about this. I actually think I did. Maybe it was during a meeting yesterday where I was somebody had asked me what was the best and worst part of L.A. And I was like, I think you can look at anything and say it has a good and a bad part, or you can look at anything and say that it's all good parts.

Hi. Sorry, did I startle you? When you're used to hearing a certain type of commercial, something like this can, well, take you by surprise. That's kind of how it is with the Lexus RX, a vehicle that has continued to defy expectations for over 25 years. From the first luxury vehicle of its kind, to the first hybrid luxury vehicle, to the only plug-in hybrid worthy of the RX name. We understand you want more than the everyday SUV, and isn't being understood an amazing feeling?

Experience amazing at your Lexus dealer. I'm going to look at this weekend and say it's all good parts because I, my thorn is that's a little toasty outside. Okay. But I'm thankful that we have good weather because I feel like LA was weird this whole year up to this point. We were raining. My house was flooding. It was raining. Like that's not normal LA weather. So I'm sitting here now in August complaining about the weather when I wouldn't wish what we went through in LA was

For the last like prior four months of like beginning four months of the year to happen ever again. My bud of this week is that I am doing a triathlon in two days. I started training three days ago and I'm not sure how it's going to go, but I can tell you I'm excited. I, if guys I'm finishing it, if I'm crawling over the finish line, do you see the passion in my eyes? It's because I mean it. I'm so excited. I'm doing it with a friend and my little brother. I invited brew.

He's afraid of the open water swim. I don't blame him. So am I. I'm doing my first one tomorrow, the day before the triathlon. Let's hope I'm not sore. I'm going to die. It's going to be so much fun. I'm like not even stressed. Like look at me. I've never been stressed in my life. So now my rose of the week. This is a big one for me because I got a bike, a bicycle. And what you might be thinking is like, that's not that exciting. I feel like every like, you know, five-year-old gets a bike at some point, but guys, I'm an adult and I haven't owned a bike in

I'm actually going to say 10 years right now, and I don't think that that's being dramatic. I haven't owned a bike in 10 years because I unicycle. Of course I fucking do. So why would I need a bike? I mean, like I said on the passions episode, my family only owns enough bikes for people who don't ride unicycles. Do the math. Welcome back to school. I'm the unicyclist of the family. I don't own a bike.

But I bought one. And it's like cherry candy red. Not crazy about the color. I kind of wanted it to be yellow, but I'm not going to be picky. Listen, I have a triathlon in two days. I haven't ridden a bike in 10 years. Okay. I had to start biking. But now I'm obsessed with biking. I've been biking in LA. And it's kind of a thrill. Like, am I going to do 12 miles or am I going to get hit by a car? Living on the edge. Just like with this triathlon. But I'm probably going to do an episode...

Immediately after in full gear. At least a 10 minute check-in. I feel like I have to. I feel like it would be an injustice not to. Either we're doing an episode or you're getting a YouTube video. Comment down below what you think we should do. I can't wait. Actually, by the time you get this, I will have already completed it. So if there's still podcast episodes coming out, you know I made it. Let's be so for real right now. But that's how I wrote the book of the week. I hope that your guys' is as exciting and humorous as mine is because I feel like...

I'm feeling a little manic. I'm feeling a little bit on edge all the time, but I'm looking forward to it. I have no complaints. Listen, it's good to try new things. It's good to explore what you love. And that gets us right into why it's so exciting to get to go back to school so soon. This year, you're about to enter into whatever year, grade, school system, level, whatever.

You're in and you have the chance to reinvent yourself. You have the chance to enter the school year and be whatever version of yourself you want to be. I think that that's what I really looked forward to the most when I was in school. Now, every year I promised myself that I was going to be cool and mysterious and like make a shit ton of friends and be like this really edgy, cool girl who like...

didn't talk too much and it wasn't a distraction in class and didn't try too hard and wasn't the girly who was like um didn't you ask for homework yesterday because i did it and i'm you never collected it and then everybody got mad at me because i definitely exposed that nobody did the homework except for me because i was a try hard and teacher's pet every year i tried not to be her couldn't avoid her what lesson do we learn maybe that's my most authentic self annoying that's okay if it is but also i think i've outgrown you know what i'm gonna retract that statement

Every year is a chance to reinvent yourself. And when you go back to school, there's this excitement that comes with it. I know growing up in the Midwest, the second September hit,

The weather completely changed. Suddenly, in Michigan especially, we had very humid summers. We'd get these beautiful, foggy September mornings. My mom would dress us up in our, like, first day of school outfits that she undoubtedly picked out for us. She'd walk us out in the front yard. We'd all have to take photos no matter what year, age, or grade you were. And then we'd get in the car, and my dad would drive us to school. And it was just very, like,

I would say traditional, maybe not that I'm actually saying that out loud, but to me it was very wholesome. It was very cozy. And there was this innate excitement about getting to be back with kids my age and learning and in a system where like there was a lot of control and a lot of structure. And some people love control and structure. I'm a big structure person.

I also get, like, super tired of doing the same thing over and over again, which is why I think I liked the learning element of school because it felt like every day you came, you were kind of refreshing your curriculum. But school for me was always something that I really, truly enjoyed. I looked forward to it. I had never at any point didn't like going to school. And...

From that, I always thought growing up that I was going to be a teacher. I always thought that I was going to work in the school system. I got the chance to test run it in a way when I was in college and I substitute taught at elementary schools in the area in Kalamazoo. And I really loved it. I like still to this day, don't discount that that could be a career path for me. I think that going back to school allows you to have true, genuine time to explore all the things that you enjoy. Like I loved, I think that

You had such accessibility to different opportunities at school from sports to different friend groups to different classes to different teachers. I always really enjoyed trying new things and having like once again that word a controlled space to do it where like you didn't have to be good to try.

You didn't have to be good to enjoy it. I mean, yes, it probably made you more popular, but in the grand scheme of it all, it was so fun that you had every different sport and opportunity and chance in school and math Olympiad and science project at your fingertips. Now, the second that you start pursuing a few passions, you start getting asked the question, so what do you want to be when you grow up? Or like, how does that fit into what you like? The second somebody finds out that you have a favorite hobby,

class or like a favorite topic or a favorite curriculum they're like oh so like do you want to do that when you're older and it's the most asked question and i hope that this lesson is the one that overarches the entire lesson of today of going back to school and that's that you don't have to know all the answers

Even in high school, even in middle school, even in elementary school, even in college, even in grad school, I still can't say that at any point in my life, I absolutely knew what I was going to be doing when I was growing up. I'm 27 and I still don't know what I'm doing when I grow up. And truthfully, I did seven years of college. I could have been a doctor, okay? But instead, I was constantly pursuing these other little interesting opportunities and tasks that I thought were fun. Like,

I don't know if I've said this on the podcast, but I'm going to say it. I was in an acapella group in college. Do not Google it. Don't you dare. That's illegal.

It's not white from the internet, but I wish it was. I was in an acapella group in college. I was in film video groups. I tried to do like engineering. I did engineering classes, but every one of my passions were not related. And this is something that I've talked about on the first episode, that there's so much value in diversifying your portfolio. There's so much opportunity when you have the chance to really explore all the things that you enjoy. Now that might feel like it fits more into college, but for me in high school, I was

I wasn't into sports. I had an older sister that danced, and so I grew up dancing. And I tried a few sports. I'm trying to think back. I actually think I got cut from the B team in volleyball. So she was never a volleyball girly. I played tennis, and I wasn't bad, okay? I'm like, actually, like, I played with Brew recently, and he was impressed. And I feel like that says a lot. Like him being like, oh my gosh, you're actually gonna hit it back? I'm like, a win is a win.

You know, I'm like not bad at tennis. I end up dropping tennis to pursue swimming. But even like in my sports in college, I started swimming my freshman or sophomore year of high school. Like I was I like most people who you think would be picking their passions and pursuing them. Like when you hear about people who are into athletics or into art or into any like sports.

interesting trade you think they start so young but the truth is you can start something new at any time in your life any level of your career I mean even video making I always loved it way more as a kid but I wasn't like proficient in it until I got to college and then I ended up still going getting a master's in that and pursuing filmmaking and videography and storytelling like even writing I

I took one creative writing class in high school, but I always, once again, like, still had that insecurity that I was bad at writing or bad at reading. And so I didn't, like, I don't think I took a single English. I think I had to take, what was it called? I'm going to forget the name.

I had to take this engineering English class, which isn't real. It's not real. You weren't like graded on your grammar. You like learned how to write a memo and like properly format an email. Okay. It wasn't real. Like it's not like spot the noun in the sentence or like the ACT English portion was harder than this class. Okay. Like I didn't really end up pursuing anything English. And then I get a master's with a focus in writing and directing. You can choose anything.

to pursue any of your passions at any point in your career or any point in your schooling and the best part is to diversifying your portfolio only gives you more perspective it allows you to meet new people who have different backgrounds than you it allows you to meet new people who have different passions than you it allows you to explore things and parts of yourself and ways to express yourself that you didn't know previously from other areas of your life

And what I think is also really valuable is like when you're in high school or when you're in college, it's easy to fall into a click. Okay. Especially in high school this year, especially in college this year. Think about that. Like a lot of times when I was in engineering, my engineer friends were friends with all engineers. That was a backwards sentence, but I promise it made sense. And then like girls who are in sororities were mostly friends with their sorority sisters or girls in business were mostly friends with other marketing girlies or engineers.

The list can go on. You know what I mean? Because you have so many classes with these people, you end up spending a majority of your time with these people unless you meet them like through your living situation, through like the dorms or things like that. You often it becomes easy to fall into just spending time only with the people who you always spend time with. And that being said, don't be afraid to try activities that are outside of your comfort zone, that are outside of your inner niche, that are outside of your like

that you know you fit into because of what you're doing for work, but maybe not what you're doing for like the love of doing things. I even have a sweet story of this and it's so crazy because it just happened yesterday, but I was at Anthropologie picking up an outfit for filming that I'm having like a little Anthropologie home tour today. And it's so crazy because when I got to the counter, classic Midwest Anna, I was like, oh my gosh, how's your day going? What have you been up to? Like, has it been busy today? You know, she was kind of asking, she's

liked my style and she was asking me what I was getting the outfits for and I told her that I was like oh funny enough I'm like doing a video with Anthropologie because it's LA that's not a weird thing for someone out of the blue to say that we're like working with a brand and um she like asked about my house and I asked her she was living either way we got into this conversation we're at by the end of it she was like oh my gosh it's so fun they do something creative like I would love to be friends I like feel like a lot of my friends are more in like corporate

And like, I wish I was more creative. And I feel like that just brought me straight into this conversation today about like,

Have friends who do lots of different things. I think that it keeps life so much more exciting. Like even my friends now in my life, like we have Katie in Michigan, Speech Path, love her. And then we have Danielle, kind of works in like production and partnership and marketing in a way. So I think that there's something really great about having friends, having friends in all the places, you know, having friends that work in all different fields, all different areas.

styles of work, interests of work, platforms even. It keeps life interesting and it keeps life entertaining. And another element of this is while you're in high school and while you're in college, I feel like adults always tell kids, these are the best years of your life. You have to really enjoy it. These are the best years of your life. And the truth is,

I don't know if they are. I think that they are very wonderful. I think that they have a lot less responsibility that I think adults miss. Like, when you're in high school and college, like, I think there's times where you're, like, for sure stressed and for sure have, like, a lot of homework on your plate. Or maybe you're, like, working jobs that don't always give you as much free time as you wish you had. But...

You're in an era where you can be very self-explorative and you don't always get that in adulthood because I think that people fall into like going and pursuing their job. And once they get a job, they kind of like they rest, they nest, they settle. They're in their career. But the truth is your life is always going to be getting better. Your life is always going to be having new avenues that are exciting and something to look forward to. And

You have so much years ahead of you to live and to experience. Don't think that you're never going to get better than when you were in high school or when you were in college. But that also doesn't mean that those years should go unlived or unenjoyed. You should be enjoying every step of the path, even when it's hard, even when it's not easy, even when you hate high school. Trust me, I'm sure there's elements you can find of it that you're like, wow, but I miss the way...

My school day ended at 3 p.m. Truthfully, yeah, literally, I did not take enough advantage of my afternoons looking back or like things like that or the chance to be involved. Like I said, everything at your fingertips. Go to the football games.

to the soccer games go cheer go be annoying raise your hand and tell the teacher they forgot the homework okay those days are going to be gone and said and done at some point and maybe you look back and you regret the things you missed out on um shout out nostalgia episode don't let yourself fall into that do all the things that you wanted to do do all the things you dreamed of because every year that you spend in school and beyond is still a year of growth

So, you want to be a marketer? It's easy. You just have to score a ton of leads and figure out a way to turn them all into customers. Plus, manage a dozen channels, write a million blogs, and launch a hundred campaigns all at once. When that's done, simply make your socials go viral and bring in record profits. No sweat.

Okay, fine. It's a lot of sweat. But with HubSpot's AI-powered marketing tools, launching benchmark-breaking campaigns is easier than ever. Get started at HubSpot.com slash marketers.

The more that I look back at school and what it was like going to school, the more that I realized that I feel like a lot of times it was kind of just training us to fit into society's workforce really well. Like you wake up five days a week, you're at school, you follow rules, you go to meetings, you get homework, you go home, you maybe work beyond the hours that you were supposed to because you're not at school anymore.

you have some time for extracurriculars. You from time to time make time for friends with her mostly on the weekends. And then you'd go back and do it again on Monday. And I feel like school's training us to be good corporate girlies, but not every career path has to be like that. If you don't want it to, like I said, there's people who love structure and control. I have some friends who thrive in their corporate girly era. Honestly,

I love it for them even I loved a corporate girly era at one point but I just was missing that creative flow I often romanticize the idea of like working at a production company so I was kind of corporate girly but still more creative like what I do now

The world is my oyster. We can do anything we ever want to because there's no reason to rush the process of choosing what you want to be when you grow up. But something that I really want to tap into is it's a luxury to say that we have time to figure out our life. And I 100% understand that. I almost want to disclaimer that before I get into this next topic of discussion. And for me specifically...

I worked during college like I had a couple different jobs substitute teaching working in engineering working in the fitness center teaching workout classes I had a couple different jobs that like allowed me to get things that I needed while I was in college which is great and I also had a really fortunate undergrad experience my parents could afford for me to go to college because I worked for them all growing up that that was like our trade-off if you work for the family business you get college and

So I was really lucky where I felt like I had the time to decide. I know that's not everybody's luxury. I know that there's a lot of times that you almost have to like make a decision of what you want to go into school to so that way you can get out and get a job and go right into that. But I also hope that even in having jobs during college and even in having jobs afterward, you remember that like today's society is not as permanent and traditional as it used to be.

You can try fun jobs that aren't your forever careers, or you can be lucky and find your forever career in a job that you never expected. But never rush the process of choosing what you love. Like, I think a lot of times what I really am happy that I did is even when I had the opportunity to start my corporate job, I still floated out some feelers toward going to grad school.

Because not only did it give me more time to figure out really what I wanted to do and who I wanted to be and what job fit my needs as an individual and fit my needs for happiness as an adult. In that, without even meaning to, I stumbled into a career that ended up allowing me to pay for all of my grad school on my own without my parents' help, which was, first off, not even in my, like, not even a possibility in my brain.

And second off, it allowed me to meet people in another state, in another school, in another curriculum who had completely different ideals of what life looked like than what I had grown up knowing growing up in the Midwest. Like shifting from going from Kalamazoo, Michigan to Los Angeles, California, you can imagine the immense diversity that I was able to be surrounded by by meeting people who were from all over the country just simply pursuing what made them happy. And that was storytelling and filmmaking.

So I know that's a luxury to say take your time. I know that's not always the option. But if you have the chance to and you're feeling like you're second guessing, this is kind of a conversation even less about going back to school, but even more about knowing what you want to be and what career you want to go into. Take your time.

Life is long. Life is so long. Even if you pick something now and five years from now, you want to try something new. I'm seeing that a lot of my friends right now that I'm like as a 27 year old, a lot of my friends graduated college at 22. And there are so many shifts happening in my friend group, in my inner circles. People are trying new things. People are moving states. People are exploring who they are. Don't be afraid of the change.

Don't be afraid to slow down and take your time. Don't be afraid to say, listen, I know that I really love this marketing career, but what if I just did like one art class? What if I did one theater class? Oh, I really know I love this theater career, but what if I did one psychology class? Oh, I really love engineering, but what happens if I just, you know, dabbled in video club? Like it gives you the opportunity to just explore.

Know that you tried everything because I think some of the best advice that I got when I was going to grad school And the reason that I think that this added Such a different not only perspective added time on to my life at a time onto my career and Changed my trajectory is that the news that I always got is you can always go backwards You will not always be able to go forward again though. So I

When I got the opportunity to go to grad school, for me, it was a chance to take a step forward in a different direction. Hey, Fidelity. What's it cost to invest with the Fidelity app? Start with as little as $1 with no account fees or trade commissions on US stocks and ETFs. That's music to my ears. I can only talk.

And I would always have my engineering degree to go, I tried film. I kind of miss my corporate lifestyle. I'm going to go back and try this again.

And truthfully, I think that a lot about any business that you've ever worked in, don't cut ties aggressively ever. Be nice to everyone. But chances are if you say, hey, I just want to make sure that like this path is what I really want to spend the rest of my life doing. Hey, I just want to make sure that this class isn't something that I'm missing out on. Hey, I just want to sit in on your lecture to know if I'm passionate about what you're talking about and if it like strikes a chord with me. So many people are so accepting, encouraging. I think like

Good humans want other humans to find their happiness too. And you finding your happiness, you finding your forever career is not taking it away from somebody else. You'd be surprised in college how accepting and welcoming people are to introduce you to what they do because it's a chance for them to share what they love as well. So when you're going back to school this year, take it slow.

Try the things. Do all the things you ever dreamed about. Ask good questions. Tell someone when what they're doing matters to them. Tell somebody when what they're doing matters to you. And most of all, don't rush the process of knowing what you want to be.

Okay, guys, so we're going to start the segment of Anna Answers, which is sponsored by our friends over at Fiji Water. And I'm so excited to hear what your guys' favorite year you would relive from school, if you could, is. So let's hear your lovely voices for this episode.

Give me the collars. Hi, Anna. My name is Kendall. And if I could relive one year of school, it would be sixth grade. My elementary school was K through six. So that's when I was the oldest and I had my best friend in the class and our teacher. It was every Friday. We would have a little jug band. Like we would play washboards and banjos and we would sing like old country songs. And I just thought it was such a cool way to bond as a class.

and it was just so fun. Like, I wish I had that all the time, and that's kind of not why, but part of why I went into music education. Like, that's what I'm studying in college. So, I just, sixth grade was just a blast. Like, I was never as cool as I was then. Okay, thank you. Bye. Okay, wait, I feel like that's so cute. Also, I love that that, like, inspired what you ended up loving and going into school for. I feel like that feels true to what I was saying. Like, loving the first day of school is what made me want to be a teacher. Loving...

Your little classroom dance day sounds like the perfect reason to go into music education. Kendall, I'm so proud of you. That's so sweet. I love that. I got chills. Okay, give me another one.

Hey, Anna. So the question that you asked us this week is what year in school we would want to relive. And for me, it would be my eighth grade year. Eighth grade was big for me academically. I did a lot of stuff club wise and a lot of stuff for my school. It was the year that I started talking to my now fiance when we went on the eighth grade Washington, D.C. trip. That's like when we really kind of bumped into each other. And it was, you know, before all the.

horribleness of high school. So yeah, if I could go back, it would definitely be eighth grade. Great. Oh my gosh. Wait, the way that I just got full body chills from it, you being with them being your fiance now, that is so sweet. Are you kidding? Oh my gosh. I would want to relive that. It's so funny because I think that I had said something similar where I was like, I think I said junior year because it was just like a fun year. And I felt like I was like really coming into my own and I was picking with colleges and I loved swimming and like, you know,

It was kind of like the first time that you meet somebody that you like and things get serious. Like, that's why I think that's what I would want to relive if I could live any of my school years back. But my gosh, guys, those were so. I'm literally going to sit at home tonight and just play through all of your voicemails on my own, even though they don't make the cut for the podcast. I'm going to sit and listen to them alone because they're so sweet. That just filled my whole heart up.
