You're listening to an Ono Media podcast. Hey everyone and welcome back to the Into the Dark podcast. I'm your host Peyton Moreland and I am so glad you are here. Thank you so much for being here. If you've never listened before, we cover all things spooky, dark, haunted, mysterious, and of course true crime. We start off every episode with my 10 seconds, which is just a way for us to
Kind of start off on a lighter note before we get down into the dark So that being said my 10 seconds if you've been keeping up I talked about going on my walks recently and about how I have been enjoying Swinging on a swing set. I'll make sure to clarify this time. A lot of people were very confused And I didn't even think twice about it really so I'm sorry. I'm sorry for the heart-dropping moment swinging on a swing set
is what I meant. And I've actually been vlogging my walks over on my Instagram, Peyton Moreland. If you want to come check it out, I'm trying to create a walking club. Walking is so, so important. Getting vitamin D, getting outside time. It's so good for your mental health. I always, like I said, swing on mine too. And a lot of people messaged me and said that the movement of swinging is actually really good for
uh, like stimulant for you for positive emotions. So maybe that's why I like it so much. Uh, either way, come check out my vlogs. And then also I want to start this walking club where we can all check in, like see where we've gone. Uh, I think it'd be really fun.
But anyways, that is my 10 seconds. And with that, let's jump into the episode. Okay, so anytime someone rich and famous dies, it's only a matter of time before people start speculating on what really happened. Because it can be hard to wrap your head around some tragedies. When someone seems larger than life, it's only natural to think that it would take something massive to send them to their grave.
Powerful celebrities shouldn't be taken down by just ordinary diseases or car accidents. And sometimes when people come up with tinfoil tales about celebrity deaths, they can feel like a bit of a stretch. But when the person who died has made an enemy of one of the most powerful families in the world...
and the official story is just full of holes and inconsistencies, well, it's no wonder that even to this day, people are still asking, who was really responsible for the death of Princess Diana? Yeah, we're going there. We're covering it. The sad truth is that for most of Princess Diana's life, she was a pawn being used by someone else.
She was manipulated, tricked, and lied to until it seemed like she didn't have a say over anything that she did. So let's go back to the beginning, give you some history, and then talk about why Princess Diana's death is such a big tinfoil tale today. So it all began when she met Prince Charles in 1977. Now at the time, Diana was just 16.
And the future king of the United Kingdom was 29. He was at her family's house because he knew one of Diana's sister's friends. And right from that first meeting, Diana was smitten with him. She couldn't help but notice how energetic and fun he seemed. But
But that wasn't the beginning of their romance. Charles actually dated Diana's sister for a while, which a lot of you might not know. And after they broke up, Diana stayed in Charles's orbit as a friend. Still, based on some statements she gave in the press, it seemed like Diana never got over that initial schoolgirl crush.
So it wasn't a total surprise that she fell head over heels when he officially began courting her in 1980. Now from Diana's perspective, it was like a fairy tale had come true. She met a handsome, charming prince. Like,
like literal prince and it seemed like he wanted to be with her for the rest of both of their lives they saw each other a grand total of 13 times before charles proposed in february of 1981 and as we know diana said yes now diana later told the press it wasn't a hard decision even though she barely knew charles at that point it just seemed like her way forward was so clear
but she may not have realized that Charles wasn't nearly as into her as she was into him. See, there was some love drama from the beginning because even though Charles proposed to Diana, he never really got over his ex-girlfriend, a woman named Camilla Parker Bowles. Now, that name might sound familiar because it's the woman that Charles is currently married to. To
Today. So she's the queen consort. To make a long story short, Charles and Camilla dated before he even met Diana. They broke up. She married someone else. Charles turned his attention to Diana's sister. And then as we know, eventually to Diana, his now much younger new girlfriend.
But on July 28th, 1981, the night before the royal wedding, Charles told Diana that he didn't love her. It sounds like maybe he was trying to do the right thing, make sure that his bride knew what she was getting into before she said her I do's. But one night isn't very long to process such a massive confession like that.
So later on, Diana described her wedding day as one of the worst days of her life. Still, she kept a stiff upper lip, she put on her white dress, she walked down the aisle, and she promised to have and to hold a man who she knew didn't love her. And once Diana was officially part of the royal family and a future queen consort,
Things didn't get better. After they had their two sons, William and Harry, who you probably know, Charles reportedly began seeing Camilla again. This is his ex-girlfriend and now current wife. He begins cheating on Princess Diana with his ex-girlfriend Camilla.
And he wasn't the only one who was cheating if the tabloids are to be believed. Rumors suggested that Diana maybe also was dating men on the side and the gossip was splashed all over the British papers as you can imagine. And this was a huge embarrassment to the entire royal family. Princesses are not supposed to cheat on their princes.
So in 1992, while Diana was still married to Charles, she actually published a tell-all book. And in it, she described how miserable she was. And she blamed her unhappy relationship for some mental health difficulties that she'd faced.
It was just another instance where she shone a spotlight on the ugly side of the crown. And as you can imagine, this was frowned upon. By the end of that year, the marriage was unsalvageable. And even though it would have been a massive scandal for Charles and Diana to divorce,
they were creating just as many scandals while staying together. So they actually separated that December and it took until 1996, that would be three and a half years later, for them to settle the terms of their divorce. Now, I think it's important to mention that while divorce does happen in the royal family, it is frowned upon, especially with someone as prominent as Charles.
Now, all the while, Diana stayed in the news, even though by all reports, she hated attention from the paparazzi and tabloid magazines. Still, she tried to use her fame for good because it's safe to say that Princess Diana was loved.
loved by her people. Diana publicly campaigned against landmines and helped raise awareness of HIV and AIDS. She just kept appearing in newspapers and magazines. And in spite of her good work, the coverage wasn't always positive.
Especially once she started dating a man named Dodi Fayed. Dodi was a film producer, but perhaps more importantly, he was the son of a wealthy department store magnate named Mohammed Al Fayed. And this relationship also came with a healthy dose of controversy, but not for the same reasons that Diana and Charles's had generated gossip.
See, even though Dodie sometimes lived in London, he was actually originally from Egypt. And as a filmmaker, he spent a decent amount of time in Los Angeles and other film hubs outside of the UK. And on top of that, he'd been raised Muslim, although it sounds like he may not have been especially devout.
Now, this next part is all speculation and rumor, so I don't know how much is true, but gossip suggested that some high-ranking people were uncomfortable with the fact that Diana was now dating a Muslim who wasn't from England. After all, she was the mother of two princes and helping to raise the future king. I mean, just because they got divorced doesn't mean she all of a sudden broke ties with the royal family. She has two boys, right?
So the gossip goes that people were nervous about Dodie potentially having so much influence over the young royals. And if he married Diana and became their stepfather, he might help raise them in some capacity. And he might influence William and Harry in some way that the rest of the family could not approve of. Again, I don't know if there's any truth to these rumors, and it seems a bit ridiculous to assume that someone's going to be a bad influence just because they're from a different country and practice a different religion.
But it is important to the story. After all, Diana had already written one tell-all book that severely embarrassed the royal family while she was still technically married to Charles. Again, tabloids suggested that she had also cheated on Charles and now had divorced him.
Now, I'm not saying this at all to say that she deserved blame in this case. She wasn't the only one who had handled the marriage badly, if you will. But still, it wasn't making her a lot of fans in the royal family. And now she was dating a guy who, according to the gossip, her former in-laws just did not approve of. It seemed like Diana was a problem. And if you believe this tinfoil tale, she was a problem that maybe needed to be taken care of.

Let's get back into the episode. In fact, Diana was convinced that someone associated with the royal family wanted her dead. This is not a rumor. Diana was telling her friends that
that she believed her rooms were bugged and that people were listening in on her telephone calls. She also warned her friend that very, very soon she thought that she might be killed. She even thought she knew how it would happen. As Diana put it, I'm probably gonna die in an accident, a helicopter, a plane, a car crash.
Now, of course, Diana wasn't really worried about an accident. She was convinced that she'd actually be murdered by the royals. She was telling people this. And it seems that Diana based this theory in part on a tragedy that she had already suffered during her marriage. See,
While Diana was still married to Charles, she was actually seeing her bodyguard right until he died in a tragic motorcycle crash. Now, officially, his death was an accident, but Diana never bought the official story. She actually claimed that her lover had probably been murdered by someone who didn't approve of the future king's wife having an affair.
Now, there doesn't seem to be much evidence that the motorcycle accident was anything but an accident, but it's not too hard to understand why Diana was suspicious now, given everything else she had been going through. And she believed she was going to be next.
So in the meanwhile, she was making the most of the limited time that she thought she had. In July of 1997, she and her sons William and Henry spent some time with Dodie in his father's home in France. And after a luxurious weekend, Diana made an odd statement to the press. She said, quote, "You will get a big surprise with the next thing I do." Now, no one exactly knows what surprise she was referring to. And sadly, she didn't live long enough to explain the comment.
But there's been a lot of speculation over the years. Some people thought that maybe Diana and Dodi had gotten engaged and they were just waiting to announce the news. Or maybe Diana was pregnant with Dodi's baby. Either way, a month and a half later, on Saturday, August 30th, 1997, Diana was in Paris with Dodi. They flew into the city in the mid-afternoon and immediately met up with Dodi's bodyguards and drivers.
Diana and Dodi rode into town in one car while a man named Henri Paul took another. Now, Henri worked at Paris' Ritz Hotel, which was owned by Dodi's father, Mohammed. He was actually the head of security. But that day, he was specifically focused on his boss's son and the princess, escorting them around the city and ensuring that they were taken care of. They
They all spent the day together and by about 7 p.m., Diana and Dodie and their entourage were back at the Ritz Hotel. So when Dodie and Diana headed back to his apartment, Henri Paul's shift was then over and if reports are to be believed, he decided to unwind by having a couple of drinks. Specifically, he downed two servings of Ricah, which is very strong,
So at this point, Dodie and Diana actually head back to Dodie's apartment with a different driver. But at 9:30 PM, they decide to go out again. They had plans to go get a late dinner. And according to some reports, they were having a hard time getting any privacy. Eyewitnesses weren't super consistent, but it sounded like paparazzi were harassing the couple at Dodie's apartment and later on the way to the restaurant. It was actually bad enough that Dodie decided to change their plans at the last minute.
They'd head back to his father's hotel, The Ritz, which had restaurants on site. And once they arrived, Henri would be called back into work, even though it doesn't sound like he was sober enough to actually do his job properly. So the couple had dinner at one of the hotel's restaurants, and all the while, photographers did not leave them alone. When they left after midnight that night, they reportedly made a fatal mistake.
So rather than let one of Dodie's drivers take them home, even though they were still on the clock, Diana and Dodie let Henri get behind the wheel of the car. This was in spite of the fact that Henri wasn't a licensed chauffeur and like I said, he'd been drinking.
See, Dodi's drivers left out the hotel's front entrance, creating a distraction, while the paparazzi photographed the pair of almost empty cars. Henri steered Dodi and Diana out a back entrance. They only had one bodyguard in the car with them. So basically, it sounds like they were trying to keep a low profile while the other vehicles drew the press's attention.
The plot with the decoy car bought them a few minutes, but before long, the photographers figured out which car the princess was inside, and the chase was on. Now, instead of driving straight back to Dodi's apartment, Henri drove in the opposite direction. Maybe he thought this would confuse the photographers and shake them off his trail, or perhaps he knew he was never going to make it back to Dodi's place that night at all.
Instead, while driving at unsafe speeds, Henri zipped into the Alma underpass. That's where, officially, he lost control of the car and smashed into the 13th support pillar. The collision was violent enough to kill Henri and Dodi instantly.
But Diana was still alive, as was the bodyguard who was in the car with her. Emergency medical responders arrived on the scene at 12:40 a.m. on the morning of Sunday, August 21st, and they took in the setting. A horribly smashed car with a driver and a passenger who were already deceased. Diana and her bodyguard were still alive, but they were badly hurt.
So paparazzi had gathered around to snap pictures of the dying princess. While the police arrested the photographers for failing to provide medical aid, the doctors helped pull Diana from the car and moved her into the ambulance. And that's where her heart stopped.
Rather than drive away and rush her to the hospital, the first responders tried to revive her right there in the parked ambulance. And they got Diana relatively stable again, and only then did they pull away. The tunnel was only three miles from the hospital, but it took over an hour for the vehicle to get Diana to the ER.
This was because every time her blood pressure dropped, they would stop driving until they could get it back up again. So it was 2:00 AM when Diana officially checked in at the medical facility. And from there she was rushed into open heart surgery. Now, sadly, it wasn't enough to save Diana. Before the physicians could get her under the knife, her heart stopped again.
But now that she was in the intensive care unit, the surgeons could try to stitch up the tears in her heart. They even tried massaging it in the hopes that it would begin beating again. Those efforts were not successful, and after two hours, the doctors called it. Diana was dead.
But almost as soon as the announcement hit the news that Diana had passed away, people began asking pointed questions about how all of this had even happened. After all, Diana was a former member of the royal family. She must have had lots of bodyguards around her over the course of the evening. One of them should have been able to prevent this accident. That seemed especially true once it came out that her driver had been too drunk to even get behind the wheel in the first place.
According to news headlines, his blood alcohol level or BAC was three times the legal limit. If he was that intoxicated, he probably would have been showing symptoms. You'd expect him to be stumbling around or slurring his words. Understandably, people wanted to know why her protective detail didn't intervene and arrange for a different driver that night. This accident seemed way too preventable unless it wasn't actually an accident.
And to complicate matters, a man named Claude Garrick speaks out at this point. He claims that he was a friend of Henri's, the driver, and he said that the security head was very careful and always took people's safety seriously. If he was too drunk to drive,
he claims that his friend never would have got behind the wheel of the car. So this made him think that Henri couldn't have been as intoxicated as the official story had said. Remember, we're getting this information from the newspapers that the driver was intoxicated, but...
What if he wasn't? Particularly given that the papers began reporting that he was a drunk driver before the post-mortem tests were even complete. Remember, he died. And before his results come out, the newspaper is like, oh, he was drunk. So it seemed to some people that it was far too early to even speculate on Henri's physical state.
But the rumors were being rushed to the papers anyways, like someone was trying to set a particular narrative. And I do want to touch on a comment made by the one and only bodyguard who got in the car with Dodie and Diana that night. He's also the lone survivor of the car crash, and he has no memory of the night. It seems he's blacked out the collision and its lead up.
But he said he didn't believe the driver was acting that drunk that evening, not that he remembers any specific behavior. However, he insisted if Henri had seemed unfit to drive, he definitely wouldn't have allowed the man to get into the car. Now, it's hard to take the statement at face value, given that the bodyguard doesn't even remember this evening. Still, you've got to assume if he was competent at all, he could have stopped Henri from driving if he was as drunk as the papers were saying.
So there is room for some skepticism around the reports about the driver's blood alcohol content. And that's all before we get into the medical treatment Diana received or didn't receive, as I should say.
Like I said before, when doctors first arrived on the scene, they didn't even prioritize getting Diana to an emergency room. They tried to treat her right there in Alma Underpass, and afterward, they kept stopping the ambulance on its way to the hospital. Again, it took over an hour for her to be transported to the facility, which seems like an odd call. Why wouldn't they just try to get her to the clinic as quickly as possible where she could receive the life-saving treatment she probably needed? And
And of course, it was a little too eerie that Diana had died exactly the way that she'd originally predicted. She'd been so certain that the royal family was going to murder her and make it look like a vehicular accident. What were the odds that she'd die in a car crash right before she was set to make the mysterious big announcement that she hinted at during her vacation with Dodie? If
If you believe that the royal family objected to Diana marrying him, and if you accept the rumors that Diana was waiting to announce an engagement or possibly a pregnancy, the timing does seem extremely suspicious. Some people think Diana didn't actually die in a tragic accident, and instead they believe she was murdered.
So some have suggested that someone might have tampered with her car in order to make the driver lose control. And that seemed especially likely if it's true that Henri wasn't as drunk as the news coverage later suggested. It's also been alleged that one or more paparazzi photographer might have caused the crash on purpose. Maybe one of them drove Diana's vehicle off the road. Either way, they'd been bribed to cause the crash or they just thought it would make for a great photo op.
There have been many suggestions that some witnesses saw bright lights flashing in or near the underpass when Henri drove into it. Maybe these lights were blinding him, making it more likely that he'd veer into one of the support columns. If you believe the collision was intentional, that could explain why Henri took such an odd route after he left the Ritz. Maybe why he drove into the Alma tunnel instead of heading straight back to Dodi's apartment.
There was no reason for him to go that way, unless someone had kind of nudged him in that direction. Maybe he was bribed or pressured to drive into the tunnel by someone who knew it was the perfect place to stage a deadly collision. However, if someone was trying to make sure Diana died in Alma Underpass, it really wouldn't be enough to make sure her car crashed.
They'd also have to ensure that the doctors wouldn't be able to revive her once they arrived on the scene. Which brings in the next element of this tinfoil tale. And that's that one or more of the physicians who responded to the crash purposefully prevented her from getting the care she needed.
Hence why she was kept in the ambulance for so long rather than being rushed to the hospital. And then once Diana died, came the coverup. The Alma underpass was cleaned and reopened to through traffic within four hours. Street cleaners passed through with their shampooers and brushes and everything was pristine in time for early commuters at 7 a.m. Which obviously ensures that it would be impossible to gather any evidence that
In other words, no one would ever be able to prove that something nefarious might have gone down in that tunnel to get Diana killed. Now, if the goal was to erase any sign of a plot against the princess, it didn't really work out well. In fact, the general public by and large did not buy this official story. One poll taken several years after Diana's death showed that more than a third of all Brits believed that she did not die in an accident. And another 21% of respondents said they weren't sure.
They weren't convinced that Princess Diana had been murdered, but they also weren't totally buying the official narrative either. It,
It added up to almost 60% of all citizens saying they weren't fully on board with the story that the royal family had fed them. And even after years passed, people only looked more for answers. The outcry was bad enough that in January of 2004, the British government actually authorized Operation Padgett. This was an official inquiry into Princess Diana's death
and they were specifically focused on the tinfoil tells about it. So this is how popular these theories had gotten. The British government decided to open an operation into looking into this. So they compiled as many different theories that they could find. They looked at the supposed motives that the crown might've wanted her dead, the methods they could have used, the tools they might've implemented to cover it up, everything.
The finished report was a whopping 871 pages long. It was an exhaustive examination.
But it ultimately concluded that Diana died in an unfortunate car accident. The document explained that the reason Diana and Dodie didn't have more protection was because Diana actually sent her bodyguards home before they even left the Ritz. She wanted privacy. She couldn't have it with a bunch of strangers hanging around. So there was nothing nefarious about the fact that she only had one bodyguard with her in the car.
And it was actually Diana's call. The documents also said there was no evidence that the car had been sabotaged or tampered with. And it even explained the long delay between the crash and Diana's arrival at the hospital. Apparently, that's standard practice for emergency medical workers in France. Their job is to get a patient stable before they transport them, rather than risk that someone might get injured worse or even die while they're in motion.
So while it was unfortunate that Princess Diana had to wait so long for potentially life-saving treatment, this wasn't really a sign of any kind of plot or malice. It was just a different approach to medical care.
The report even said that Diana's home had never been bugged and no one was spying on her. They also interviewed Diana's best friends, most of whom agreed they really had heard nothing about an engagement to Dodie. And her autopsy results confirmed that she was not pregnant. So it's unclear what her big surprise was that she alluded to a few weeks before her death.
But it does sound unlikely that she was killed because she and Dodie were taking things to the next level. This is obviously just according to Operation Padgett. Basically, they made it seem like she had no reason to be afraid and her death was nothing but a semi-random tragedy. The same official story that had been coming from the authorities for almost seven years.
years already. It was definitely a disappointment to people who were hoping for different answers, but maybe not a surprise. I mean, after all, if the royal family was behind the death in some way, why would this operations investigators expose them? Like, they all reported to the
at an all-time low. Just look at how many people were skeptical when Kate Middleton's social media accounts released that controversial photo earlier this year, which does open up a larger debate. Of course, public figures are entitled to privacy. You could argue that Diana, Dodie, and Henri might have never even hit the road in such a dangerous rush if they weren't trying to get away from photographers.
The British royal family and really any famous person does not owe us anything. We're not entitled to know their secrets or hear about their scandals. But on the other side of the coin, we have to ask, how far will celebrities go to get away from the prying eyes of the public? We know they might lie or trick reporters, but would they kill to get rid of a scandal? Did the crown murder Diana so she couldn't bring even more controversy to their front door?
There is one other explanation though, one that makes the death an accident, but also gives us someone to blame.
Some people do hold the paparazzi responsible for Diana's death. They think that she, Dodi, and Henri wouldn't have died if the photographers hadn't chased them through Paris. I mean, that's what Diana's son, Prince Henry, believes. He said he once asked his driver to race through the Alma underpass going 65 miles per hour. Basically, he was trying to recreate the conditions under which his mother died, and he said it was especially dangerous.
But that didn't mean he thought someone from his family had done something extra to murder her. Instead, he concluded that the press were too aggressive in chasing the car down and their flash bulbs might have blinded Henri so he couldn't navigate the car safely. It was an evil plot, but in his mind, they were still guilty of Diana's death.
We may never know if this theory is right or who exactly is to blame if there is anyone. But I do think it's unfortunate that Diana's death in some ways has honestly overshadowed her life. Princess Diana did some great things and she probably would have accomplished so much more if she hadn't passed away so young. So setting aside the question of how and why she really died, I want to spend a little short time talking about what Diana did in the 36 short years that she had on Earth.
I mentioned earlier that Princess Diana helped raise awareness of HIV and AIDS, but I want to highlight how big of a deal that was in the early and mid 1990s. At that time, the illness was considered very taboo and basically unmentionable in certain circles.
There was also a lot of misinformation going around about it. Some people thought you could just catch HIV or AIDS by shaking hands or hugging a person who was infected. Obviously, for the record, this is not true. The virus does not spread through touch. Diana knew that, and when she visited patients in the hospital, she would go and give them hugs and touch them skin to skin without gloves.
And this might sound like a small thing, but there were a ton of people who weren't willing to do even that. So many people were being treated like they were dirty or less than human because of this diagnosis, but Diana was different. She recognized the humanity in everyone. She was all too human too, and her life ended too soon.
and the world is a darker place without her in it. And that is the tinfoil tale of Princess Diana's death. I hope you guys enjoyed this episode. Of course, when we talk about tinfoil tales, I try to stay pretty neutral on the fence, but leave a comment, let me know how you feel. I know that there is mounds and mounds more evidence about this. This was obviously just a summary for people who maybe haven't looked into it. I will say though,
I definitely don't think it's that weird to think that people with power, whether in America or not, might do things to try to keep it that way. I will see you next week as we go further into the dark together. Goodbye.
