I've been thinking lately about this thing that I'm calling the letting go place. I think practicing letting go is a really important and healthy part of life. And yet we're discouraged in so many ways from doing it. We're told to hold on to people, to things, to money, to security. Holding on is winning. And letting go is kind of lazy and losing. And yet,
Letting go makes space. Space for new things. Space to breathe. Space for inspiration and intuition and love. Space for nature to come in and bring healing or even a miracle or two. Relationships especially require the art of letting go as we navigate allowing another person to join us in our world and to create with them.
And hey, we're here tonight because we need to let go in order to sleep. So it's a very basic thing. And so as I've practiced and studied this letting go, primarily in meditation, it feels like I've identified it as a place in my body. Now, I know it's not an actual place, but I feel like I let go from different parts of my body, mostly along my spine or central nervous system.
from deep inside. And it's important that it's the nervous system because as we've discussed before, you have two very distinct nervous system responses. The contraction of the sympathetic nervous system and the relaxation of the parasympathetic nervous system. And this letting go place, as it were, is really allowing that parasympathetic nervous system release. Now there are many ways to practice letting go.
Writing stuff down and just getting it out of your head, to-do lists, your feelings, that really helps with giving yourself permission to let go. Sharing your feelings with a friend and getting things off your heart, that helps. Breaking a sweat and letting physical energy burn off. Meditation, which allows some of the deepest letting go. So tonight we're going to practice finding this letting go place in you so you can practice it.
at night but even during the day in weird little moments little secret moments with yourself where you just decide hey i'm just going to try letting go in this moment see what happens so get yourself into a safe and comfortable position and let's begin allow your eyes to close easily and gently and bring your awareness to your breath you don't need to do anything interesting or special with your breath although if you want to take some deep breaths go ahead
But this is really about reeling in your mind. Like you've been casting your mind out all day in all these different directions. And finally, you are simply reeling it in. Now the mind loves to move around, so it's not going to stay on your breath for too long. It's not like you can just stop the mind. But every night as we practice this reeling in the mind, coming home to the body, coming home...
to the breath. It gets easier and easier to quiet things down. And you'll find it's easier and easier to focus your mind during the day. Good. So now I'd like you to bring your awareness up into your eyelids and imagine that your eyelids are feeling heavy. Heavy and sleepy and tired. As you let them get heavier and heavier, I'd like you to accept the suggestion that your eyelids are so heavy that they will not open. Like they're stuck shut.
Now they're not stuck shut, you're imagining that they are. But we're gonna go with your imagination. We're gonna let the imagination win. So as you imagine that your eyes are so heavy they will not open, I'd like you to wiggle your eyebrows to prove to yourself that they will not open. So you're really just letting your imagination win. Like a little kid playing a game. So wiggle your eyebrows. Good.
Beautiful. You can stop testing now. Now this lovely relaxation you have around your eyes is the same quality of relaxation that you will soon have throughout your entire body. And if you've been listening to sleep magic for a while, even the sound of my voice is causing your body to take itself deeper and deeper. So we're just going to go with that flow. Imagine that warm relaxation around your eyes moving back.
into your head. Picture it like a mist, beautiful silver mist, moving throughout your entire brain, taking over every single cell of your brain as your head becomes heavy, heavy, heavy in the pillow, and the muscles of your face become soft and relaxed, and your face lets go for the day. Our faces do so much work, but now it's time to let go.
as you imagine warm waves of relaxation lapping up against the beach of your mind. Feel those warm waves lapping up against the beach of your mind. And now let's imagine this silvery mist moving down into your shoulders. Your shoulders releasing and relaxing, letting go of the day. And all of the responsibilities you carry on those shoulders are falling to the floor.
Responsibilities you feel to your family and friends. Responsibilities you feel to your work and your passion projects. Responsibilities you feel to your community, to the world at large. Responsibilities you feel to the future. You may even be holding on to responsibilities you feel to the past.
And they're all falling to the floor and you can pick any or all of them up tomorrow morning but for right now your only responsibility is to yourself. And that feels nice. This is your time. So now allow that warm silver mist of relaxation to move down your arms and your arms are feeling heavy. Heavy. Allow your palms to open if that's comfortable for you. Which takes you to an even deeper surrender.
as the heaviness moves down into your hands and finger, every finger feeling full, heavy, and totally relaxed. Now you may be aware of any sounds going on around you, but from this moment on no sound that you hear will bother or disturb you in any way. In fact, from this moment on any sound that you hear, like traffic on the street, noises from within your room, another room,
Those sounds will actually cause you to go deeper and even deeper into relaxation. The only sound you're paying any real attention to is the sound of my voice and even the sound of my voice is taking you deeper and deeper. And very soon, and it may have happened already, the sound of my voice is going to sound like some weird wallpaper in the distance as you let go, let go.
As that silvery mist of relaxation moves down into your chest, relaxing and opening your ribcage. And as that mist moves down deeper into your torso, deep into your belly, imagine it swirling in your belly, softening your belly as your pelvis feels heavy on the bed. And the silvery mist of relaxation is moving all the way down your legs now, as your legs
Feel heavy, heavy, heavy. As the relaxation moves down into your feet and your toes, every toe feeling full, heavy, and totally relaxed, totally relaxed. So as you take yourself deeper and deeper, bring your awareness back now into your brain. We hold so much energy in our minds, juggling our to-do lists, remembering our opinions,
and beliefs, the birthdays of our loved ones. But sleep is all about letting go. So I want to make the suggestion that you don't need any of that stuff for the next several hours. And whatever information is truly important is already etched in your subconscious mind. So any tension you may be feeling in your mind right now, anything you may be ruminating on, imagine
Letting it go. Imagine a band of energy in your head. It's beginning to stretch and expand, extending beyond your skull. And now it's releasing into the air. And notice that band of energy simply evaporating as you let go of thought. And you notice this letting go place in your mind. It's okay to let go of your thoughts. You may need to do it again and again.
And that's fine. Everyone has to do it again and again. Your thoughts will never go away entirely, but they're becoming softer, looser, evaporating almost before you can think them. And you're just being. Being is good. Being is peaceful. In this moment, in this place, you're just being good.
Now bring your awareness down to your throat. This is another energy center in your body. And sometimes we withhold from the throat. We withhold what we want to say in the world. We withhold how we want to express ourselves and our truth. Sometimes we become afraid of saying what we need to say. And then sometimes there may be too much energy in the throat. Maybe you talk when you're anxious.
Perhaps you use words as a way of covering up or ignoring other parts of yourself. Sometimes we talk over our feelings or over our instincts. So imagine the letting go play in your throat. A place where energy is relaxing, opening, allowing, simply being. Imagine your throat simply relaxing and letting go.
Maybe this means telling your truth, saying what you need to say, singing what you need to sing, even screaming what you need to scream. And maybe the letting go means being quiet for a while, letting go of all the talk and simply being. So imagine the letting go play in your throat. Good. Now bring your awareness down to your heart.
This is a place of so much energy. Sometimes we hide and suppress our feelings in our hearts. Maybe there are feelings you are nursing in your heart, doubling down on them, holding them protectively. Maybe you're holding on to resentment or pain or self-pity. Maybe your heart is a place where you cultivate peace and love.
the heart can do a lot of different things. So imagine now the letting go place in your heart. A place beneath the holding where energy is releasing like a fist opening. Allow that energy fist to open and notice any bands of energy expanding, releasing, evaporating. Good. Now I'd like you to bring your awareness down deeper.
into your gut. We tend to hold a lot of energy in this part of our bodies, whether that's the stomach or the intestines. We have gut feelings, deep gut level desires, intuition. Your gut knows things. It carries deep information. And sometimes you may deny your gut and not listen to it. Sometimes it's inconvenient to listen to your gut.
So you hold things down. Are you holding anything down in your gut? Or do you listen to what it's telling you? So now let's imagine the letting go place in your gut. Imagine it relaxing and letting go like a flower opening. Any bands of energy that you've been holding, consciously or unconsciously, are releasing. And you hear what your gut says.
is telling you. You don't have to share what you discover with anyone else if you're not ready to. But it's okay to be truthful with yourself as your gut and your heart and your throat and your mind all align. And now that we've done all this letting go, let's go back and do it again. And this time, see what's possible as you bring your awareness back
to your mind, your brain, inside your head. Now that you're more relaxed, there's space and you allow your mind to fill with light. So now you're bringing light to the world. Enjoy this feeling as you allow the light to take over every single cell of your brain. From emptiness comes fullness.
And now as you bring your awareness back to your throat, allowing the letting go to happen, feeling peaceful and calm, your throat is filling with light. And this light is expanding into your room as you express your light in the world. From emptiness comes fullness. As you bring your awareness down into your heart, connecting with the letting go place in your heart,
And now it's filling with light, overflowing with light. From emptiness comes fullness. From tension comes peace. From darkness comes light. And the light in your heart is expanding into the room, filling the room as you bring your light to the world. It feels so good.
as you bring your awareness down into your gut, to the letting go place in your gut. And now it's filling with light, energy moving through your gut, into the room, down to the ground. You are connected to the earth, to other people, as you send out this light and you bring this pure positive energy to your world by letting go
You receive by emptying. You are filled, and now you are filled with light from the top of your head to the bottom of your spine as you imagine it spreading down your arms and out your hands. Notice the light spreading down your legs and out your feet as this pure positive energy fills you by letting go. You receive by emptying. You are filled
you notice that you're practicing the letting go place in your life. When you feel tension, you notice it and let go. When you experience negative emotions, you notice them and let go. You go to the letting go place and relax and see what happens, see what comes. You find you're enjoying the letting go place like it's your own little secret.
your place of transformation, your place of possibility. As you lie in your bed, feeling so relaxed and heavy on the mattress, you're going deeper and deeper, letting go, letting go, letting go,
