NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and President-elect Trump held face-to-face talks in Florida yesterday as Russia escalates tensions with Ukraine by firing a new type of missile at the country. A NATO spokeswoman said this morning that Trump and Rutte discussed global security issues.
Trump's pending return to the White House has jangled nerves in Europe, where some fear he may pull the plug on vital Washington military aid for Ukraine.
President-elect Trump was also busy yesterday announcing more cabinet nominees, including one of the most important, Treasury Secretary. He chose billionaire investor Scott Besant. In this statement, they said that Scott will support his policies that will drive U.S. competitiveness, stop unfair trade imbalances, work to create an economy that places growth at the forefront, especially through our coming world energy dominant. to raise tariffs. Some economists have criticized tariffs, saying they'll raise prices on American consumers and manufacturers here who source items from abroad. A federal agency gives final approval for a first-of-its-kind congestion toll in the country. The Federal Highway Administration has signed off on New York City implementing a congestion price plan early next year, a first-of-its-kind program in the U.S. that would charge drivers $9 to enter Manhattan during peak times.
New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority says the toll will raise $15 billion for modernizing mass transit. No other city in the U.S. has so far implemented a congestion toll, though a handful of cities around the world, including London, have similar fees for drivers.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul reduced the toll earlier this month from $15. Instead, there will be gradual increases until 2031. In Washington, Jared Halpern, Fox News. Lebanon's civil defense says Israeli airstrikes today killed at least 11 people and injured dozens in central Beirut as diplomats scrambled to broker a ceasefire. The number killed may rise as emergency responders dig through the rubble looking for survivors.
A North Carolina tree that survived Hurricane Helene will bring the spirit of the holidays to the White House.
North Carolina growers produce nearly a quarter of the real Christmas trees grown in the U.S. every year, and thousands were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Helene. Kartner's owner, Sam Kartner, says being selected to supply the White House Christmas tree is an honor, not just for his family, but for the entire region. The tree will sit in the blue room of the White House, traditionally used for receptions and other large ceremonies.
