John O'Keefe was found lying motionless in the snow with two black eyes, head injuries, and scratches on his arms. He was wearing only a long-sleeve t-shirt, and one of his shoes was at the scene but not on his foot. A smashed cocktail glass was scattered around, and one of the women present had a ring of blood around her mouth.
Karen Read was considered a suspect because she was John O'Keefe's girlfriend and was the one who found his body. Her car's rear right taillight was cracked, and pieces of it were found at the scene. Additionally, her blood alcohol content was at the legal limit when tested hours after the incident, suggesting she was driving under the influence.
The medical examiner ruled that John O'Keefe's cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head combined with hypothermia.
The defense argued that the injuries on John O'Keefe's body did not match being hit by a car. They pointed to deep lacerations on his arms and suggested he may have been attacked inside the house by someone, possibly involving the homeowner's German shepherd. They also highlighted a Google search made by a partygoer at 2:27 a.m. asking 'How long to die in cold?' as evidence of foul play.
Jennifer McCabe's Google search at 2:27 a.m. asking 'How long to die in cold?' was significant because it suggested that someone at the party was aware of John O'Keefe's condition or potential death hours before his body was found. The defense argued this indicated a cover-up.
Trooper Proctor was removed from the case due to a conflict of interest and bias. Texts he sent to other officers called Karen Read a 'whack job' and joked about finding nudes or dismissed the idea that Brian Albert, a fellow officer, would get in trouble. An FBI probe concluded his personal feelings impacted his ability to conduct an impartial investigation.
The jury was deadlocked, and the judge declared a mistrial. A retrial is set to begin in January 2025. Meanwhile, John O'Keefe's family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Karen Read and the bars where the group was drinking that night.
Turtle Boy, a self-proclaimed investigative journalist, covered the Karen Read case extensively before it went to trial. He became known for his YouTube videos and rallying cries outside the courthouse. However, he was later arrested and charged with witness intimidation for contacting witnesses and showing up at their homes and workplaces.
When John O'Keefe's boy was found in the snow in January of 2022, there were more questions than answers. Eventually his girlfriend, Karen Read, was charged with his death. But as the case unraveled in court, dark secrets, illicit affairs, and police coverups came to light, proving that the truth would be hard to find.
