This is the story of Mark and Dylan Redwine. I'm Courtney Browen. And I'm Colin Browen. And you're listening to Murder in America. ♪♪
Dylan Redwine was born on February 6, 1999 in Denver, Colorado. His parents, Mark and Elaine, had already had a son eight years prior named Corey. But despite the brothers' age difference, Dylan and Corey were extremely close.
now when dylan was five years old his parents decided to leave denver and they purchased a home at 61 windmill drive in durango a small picturesque city in southwestern colorado surrounded by the san juan mountains and for the next few years mark elaine corey and dylan lived happily together dylan loved video games and sports especially baseball and football he was a very fast and gifted athlete
who loved going to practice. Elaine admitted that whatever Dylan wanted to do, he did it with the utmost enthusiasm. She also said that Dylan was a team player and during his time playing baseball, he wanted to help each of his teammates with their position.
And that's the kind of kid he was, always looking to help those around him. Dylan was not only active and adventurous, but those who were close to him also said he was vibrant, outgoing, and had a great sense of humor. Here's his mom, Elaine. Dylan was sweet. He was funny. He was charismatic. He was very empathetic. He really cared about people and their feelings.
Very sweet, sweet voice. His older brother, Corey, said that he admired Dylan. Joyful, positive, you know, goofball. You know, he had a laugh that was, you know, still to this day, you know, it's one of my fondest things about him. So, you know, he was a person you just wanted to be around.
Dylan also had a lot of friends. He was the kind of boy who would see someone standing by themselves and would go up and introduce himself. Here is his friend Ryan Nava describing how they met.
I went to the Family Dollar in Bayfield with my grandma and I saw a bunch of kids about my age and I was new to town. So I think Dylan noticed me so he came over to me and asked if I wanted to hang out. And that's the kind of person Dylan was. He really cared about people and his friendships were important to him. I'll describe Dylan as a good friend, outgoing, funny,
Now in 2005, Dylan would experience a big life adjustment.
At around six years old, his parents, Mark and Elaine, would separate. And over the next few years, they would go through a pretty rough divorce. Mark got the house, but Elaine got primary custody of the boys. They would still see their father from time to time, but with his busy truck driving schedule, it wasn't very often. So Dylan and Corey spent the majority of their time with their mom. And eventually, Elaine would move on,
She met a man named Michael Hall, who had kids of his own, and soon enough they would all move in together, blending their families. Around this time, Dylan seemed to be adjusting well. Of course, divorce is never easy, but he was a good and resilient kid. When life got stressful, he turned to sports and his friends, which always made him happy. But soon enough, there was another big change in his life.
Dylan found out he had to move about six hours away to the Colorado town of Monument. His mom and stepdad found opportunities there that they just couldn't pass up, which meant that Dylan's eighth grade year would be spent at a new school and he would have to say goodbye to all of his friends in Durango.
So that June of 2012, their family packed up their things and uprooted their lives to plant new roots in this new city. By then, Dylan's older brother Cory had already moved out of the house after turning 18, but he decided to follow them out there and get a place of his own. That way he could be close to his family. And Dylan was really happy about this because at least he'd have his brother nearby.
Dylan's family said that he wasn't too happy about this move in the beginning I mean what 13 year old would be but it wouldn't take Dylan long to start making new friends He ended up meeting some young boys in his new neighborhood and together they would ride their bikes play video games Hang out at the river and sleep over at each other's houses on the weekends slowly But surely he was adjusting to his new life but one point of contention for Dylan was his relationship with his father and
After his parents' divorce, visiting his dad almost felt like a chore. He usually only saw him a handful of times a year, but Dylan never looked forward to these visits. He told his mom that he often just sat around bored and none of his friends from the Durango area were within walking distance. And now that Dylan lived six hours away from his dad, it made visiting him all the more difficult. Here's Dylan's older brother, Corey, explaining how Dylan and his dad's relationship had changed over the years.
Dylan was growing into a young man and was kind of gone just through being a teenager, puberty and stuff like that. And needed just some people in his life and the ones that he had in his life that he wanted to contact, he did.
A few months after they moved out to Monument, Colorado, in September of 2012, Dylan's parents went to court again to discuss custody of him. Mark wanted to see his son more, but Dylan didn't feel the same way.
He actually spoke directly to the judge and told her that he wanted to live full time with his mom, Elaine. So from there, the judge ruled that Elaine would keep primary custody of Dylan, but he was required to go visit his father during court-ordered visitations. It was reported that Mark was extremely unhappy with this ruling. By then, Mark and his older son, Corey, had a strained relationship.
And now with Dylan living six hours away, he felt like he never got to see his kids. So he was still trying to maintain a relationship with Dylan. In fact, that summer, he and Dylan had taken a road trip to Boston so they could see the Red Sox game together. But every time Dylan went to stay with his dad,
he always seemed eager to get back home. His brother Cory would later say that when Dylan would go stay with his dad, he would call him over and over and over, trying to get Cory to pick him back up. Nothing really seemed to have happened while at his dad's house. Dylan just didn't like being there. He also said that his dad would talk poorly about his mom and older brother, which always made Dylan really upset.
Now soon enough, the holidays were approaching. That year, Dylan would spend Christmas with his mom, which meant Thanksgiving had to be spent at his dad's house, which he wasn't too happy about.
In early November 2012, Dylan started talking to his mom about how he didn't want to stay with his dad that Thanksgiving, partly because he didn't like staying with his dad and because Elaine's mom, Dylan's grandma, was dying of cancer. They all figured that this would likely be her last Thanksgiving, and Dylan wanted to spend it with her, and he was really upset about it. So much so, Elaine even called her lawyer to see if there was anything they could do about it, but there wasn't much they could do.
Mark had already paid for Dylan's flight and this visit was court ordered, so he had to go. Dylan was upset, but his mom tried to get him excited about it. "At least you'll get to see your old friends," she said, which was true. As much as Dylan hated going to his dad's house,
All of his old friends still lived there, so at least he could go see them. Soon enough, Dylan packed up his cell phone, iPod, chargers, and a few items of clothing, throwing them all into his backpack. And on November 18th, 2012, his mom drove him to the Colorado Springs airport. Elaine would later say that as Dylan walked away from her to walk to his gate,
She yelled out to him, "Are you too old to hug your mom goodbye?" With that, Dylan turned on his heels, gave her a smirk. From there, Dylan grabbed his stuff and got on the plane. Elaine could have never known that this would be the very last time she would ever see her son alive. Once the plane landed, Elaine texted Dylan, "Did you land?"
Dylan replied, "Just did." And knowing Dylan's feelings about going on this trip, she texted him back saying, "Proud of you. Love you. Thanks for keeping in touch." Minutes later, she sent another text, "Did your dad get you?" To which Dylan responds, "Yes. Brownie face." In the security footage from the airport,
You can see Dylan get off the plane and make his way over to where his father is. But he's clearly not excited to be there. Even when he sees his dad, they don't hug, he doesn't smile, and he just keeps his head down and his hands in his pockets. It's around this time when Dylan texts his friend Ryan Nava, who lives in town. - Can I stay with you tonight? - Soon after, Ryan texts back,
Yeah, I'll be home around 8. So Ryan is his best friend in town, and hanging out with him is the only thing Dylan is looking forward to this week. He hasn't even been in Durango for half an hour, and he's already making plans to see him. Now as for him and his dad's plans, here is what Mark said they talked about doing that week.
One of the things we talked about was going to my brother David's house in Castle Rock. I know his friends were important to him, so we wanted to make sure that he had adequate time to be with his friends.
Basically the plan was Monday and Tuesday he would spend with his friends, maybe Wednesday we had talked a little bit maybe about going bowling or doing something as an activity not with just me and him but with his friends included and then we'd have Thanksgiving Day to ourselves.
From the airport, Dylan and Mark stopped by Walmart to grab a few things for the week. Mark would later say that he had just come home from an overnight trucking job in New Mexico, so there wasn't a lot of food in the house, and he wanted to make sure Dylan had everything he needed. But again, from the security footage in Walmart, the two just seem a little distant.
Mark even suggested that they go get dinner somewhere, but Dylan just wanted McDonald's. So after Walmart, they go get burgers before returning back home. And by this point, Dylan is kind of upset. While in Walmart, he had asked his dad if he could go to his friend Ryan's house that night, but Mark said no. In the footage, you can see Dylan texting Ryan with the news. He says, "Can't come. Sorry. I'll hang tomorrow."
Moments later, Ryan texts back, "Did your dad say no?" Then Dylan responds, "Yes." Now, his dad, Mark, did have to wake up early that next morning to run errands. So Dylan decided that he was going to wake up early with his dad and get him to drop him off at Ryan's house. So he texts Ryan about these new plans, saying, "Can I come early?"
like 6:30 early tomorrow, Ryan says, "Yeah?" "You better let me in." "I will." "I will call your ass all day if you don't." "I'll let you in." So as you can see, Dylan was worried that Ryan was going to be sleeping in and wouldn't answer the door if he came early in the morning. So he tells Ryan that he will call him over and over again if he doesn't let him inside.
Ryan tells him to go through the sliding glass door so that he wouldn't wake up his family and to call him when he gets there in the morning. Ryan even set an alarm on his phone for 6:30 a.m. so he could wake up and let Dylan inside. And with that, Ryan goes to bed, expecting to see Dylan bright and early that next morning.
When Ryan's alarm clock goes off on the morning of November 19th, he sleepily opens his eyes and gets out of bed. And he was expecting Dylan to be waiting for him outside, so he went to look for him. Though when Ryan walked outside, Dylan was nowhere to be seen. So he texts him, where are you? But no response. From there, Ryan even tries to call Dylan several times, but he never picks up.
Ryan was disappointed. He was really looking forward to seeing Dylan that day, but he never showed.
And this was strange, because the night before, Dylan had been pretty adamant about coming over. He even said, I'm going to call you all day if you don't let me in. So the fact that he didn't show up and didn't call was weird. But being 13 years old, Ryan didn't jump to any morbid conclusions. Surely, there was some explanation on why Dylan couldn't hang out.
So, Ryan made other plans. Later that morning, he ended up going to his friend Fernando's house. He even texted Dylan and told him to come hang out over there, but once again, no response. Then surprisingly, hours later, while Ryan was at Fernando's house, they saw a car pull into the driveway.
It was Dylan's dad, Mark Redwine. When he got out of the car, he told the boys that he couldn't find Dylan. Mark asked if they had seen him, but they hadn't. So Ryan texts Dylan again. "Dude, your dad is looking for you." No response. Soon after, he texts again. "Are you alright, dude?" No response. And it's here where everyone starts to worry.
It's around this time over in Colorado Springs when Dylan's mom, Elaine, gets a text message from Dylan's dad. It reads, Elaine, I'm wondering if you have heard from Dylan. I've been trying to reach him all afternoon. Immediately, Elaine felt sick to her stomach. She told the show Killer Cases, quote, I was very scared for my son. He wasn't even there for 24 hours. And he's missing? I was frantic.
From here, Elaine, her husband Michael, and Dylan's older brother Cory all get into the car and start making the 6-hour drive to Durango. The drive felt like an eternity.
And the more she thought about it, the more panic she became because Dylan hadn't been responding to any of her text messages. In fact, the night before she had texted him, how's it going, son? You okay? But he never replied. And then that afternoon at 12:07 PM, she texted him again saying, how's it going, son? I miss you. But again, no response. And now his father is saying that Dylan is nowhere to be found. So it's here where Elaine makes a call to 911 to report him missing.
Soon enough, the Durango Police Department began their search for 13-year-old Dylan Redwine. Elaine would later say that on her way to Durango, she called all of Dylan's friends to see if he was with any of them.
When she called Ryan Nava, he told her that Dylan was supposed to come over that morning, but he never showed up.
And knowing that this was now very serious, Ryan sends Dylan another text pleading for him to call them back. I told him, dude, you need to call somebody, anybody as soon as possible. We all worried about you. Your mom called and she's worried, bro. Seriously, when you... And another text. I told him, seriously, when you get the message, call someone. I...
She wanted him to really call somebody because something was not right. And deep down, everyone knew that something was not right here. And to Elaine, she immediately suspects that her ex-husband had something to do with this. In fact, earlier, he had told her that he called the marshal's office to report Dylan missing. But when she called them...
They had no record of Mark calling. They didn't even know there was a child missing by the time she called in, which didn't sit right with her. Why would Mark lie about that? So on her way to Durango, Elaine sends Mark several messages. "I'm so suspect of you right now. How could he just disappear?"
But Mark was adamant that he had no idea where Dylan was. He would later say that everything had been fine between him and Dylan. The night before, the two got back to his house at 8:30 p.m. and watched a movie together. Then Mark went to bed around 10:30 while Dylan stayed out in the living room watching TV. The next morning, Mark said he woke up at 6:30 a.m. to run some errands. He had to go to his employer to sort out a payroll issue.
So he went out into the living room to wake up Dylan, but he decided he didn't want to go out anymore. He wanted to sleep in. So with that, Mark left to run his errands. And when he came back home, Dylan was gone. His backpack and cell phone were also missing.
Here's Mark describing their interaction that morning. Well, there was some discussion that he had had with me the night before about leaving with me so I could drop him off in the Bayfield area with one of his friends that had been trying to text him or he had been communicating with. You know, as he indicated to me that he was up till four o'clock the morning before and that he was tired from being in the airport most of the day and his travel from Colorado Springs to Durango.
I laughed at him kind of jokingly because I know him. If he ain't got to get up, he's not likely to get up, and he's not the kind of kid that's going to get up at 6:30 if he doesn't have to. But his friends are important, and I know they're important to me, so there was a possibility. But it doesn't surprise me that he elected not to get up when I left. And when I left, he acknowledged that everything
that I was saying to him and that I would be back. He knew that when I came back, I would be working on getting him down to his friends. And that's part of the struggle that we all have is, you know, what happened to him between the time I left and the time I got back. Soon enough, Dylan's mom Elaine finally arrived in Durango to help with the search. By then, word had spread about Dylan's disappearance and many people in town came to help. But where do they even look?
Canines had gone to Mark's house to see if they could sniff out where Dylan was located. But because all of Dylan's stuff was gone, the canines didn't have a scent to follow. Now Mark's house was located in a remote area surrounded by dense wilderness of the San Juan National Forest. So the search team started there.
And some people started to speculate that maybe Dylan decided to walk to his friend's house that morning. But they quickly ruled that out. Mark's house was about 20 miles away from Dylan's friends, so he wouldn't have been able to walk there. Plus, they had already checked all of Dylan's friends' houses and he wasn't with any of them.
So the police start to wonder if maybe Dylan ran away. Mark Redwine started to wonder that too. But his mom, Elaine, knew that that wasn't the case. She even asks Mark, "Did you and Dylan get into a fight?"
But he was adamant that nothing happened between them. And to her, that just didn't make sense. Dylan wouldn't have run away, especially if things had been going well at his dad's house. And his mom said that he definitely wouldn't have run off without calling her or his brother, Corey. Now, Corey was also there to search for his little brother. He was 20 years old at this point, and Dylan had asked if he could come on this trip with him. But Corey decided not to.
He and his dad didn't have the best relationship, and since he was an adult, he didn't have to see his dad for Thanksgiving, so he didn't. But upon hearing the news of Dylan's disappearance, he immediately suspected that his dad knew more than what he was letting onto. In fact, as soon as they arrived in Durango, he approached his dad and said, "What did you do with Dylan?"
But once again, Mark said that he didn't do anything and he didn't know where Dylan was. And by looking at Mark's text messages, it did appear as if he was trying to get in contact with Dylan that day. In fact, that morning, after running his errands, he texted Dylan. Hey, bud, out of the office. Call me. One minute later, at 8.15 a.m., Mark texted him again, saying, call me, please.
Mark would say that Dylan never texted him back and when he got home at around 11:30 AM, he realized that Dylan wasn't there.
at 11 33 a.m mark texted dylan again saying dill i am home and you are nowhere to be found come back so i can get you to bayfield at least call me okay but mark would later say that he wasn't too concerned at this point when he got home he even laid down and took a nap however when he woke up and dylan still wasn't home that's when he began to worry he texted him again at 2 33 p.m for the fourth and final time saying dylan you need to call me where are you
The phone records also showed that Mark had attempted to call Dylan's cell phone a total of seven times that day.
At this point, darkness was beginning to fall on the city of Durango, and Dylan was still nowhere to be found. Now Mark did go looking through his home, and Dylan was definitely not there. But during this search, Mark said that he noticed Dylan's fishing pole was missing from the garage. So Mark pointed the search teams towards the Mountain Lake Dam.
where he said that Dylan liked to fish. Maybe he went out there and lost track of time. But according to Dylan's family, they immediately thought this was unlikely. Yes, Dylan liked to be outside, but he wasn't necessarily an avid fisherman.
and he never went fishing by himself. Even further, this lake is about seven miles away from Mark's home, and Dylan obviously couldn't drive, so it seemed unlikely that he would have hiked seven miles to go fishing all by himself. But they decided to search there anyway, for hours. Search teams surrounded the Mountain Lake Dam, looking for any sign of Dylan.
They even called in a dive team from New Mexico. And it wasn't an easy search. Durango is mountainous, rugged,
and in the middle of November, it's cold. That night, as the search team scoured the land, temperatures dropped below freezing. In the early morning hours of November 19th, they called off the search for the night. That evening, as the town of Durango went to bed, Dylan was on everyone's mind. Elaine couldn't even sleep, knowing her son was still out there somewhere in the freezing cold.
Her mind went to dark places. But all they could do was get up that next morning and continue looking, which is exactly what they would do. By early the next day, the search teams were back out in the wilderness looking for him. A man named Roy Vreeland was a search coordinator, and something that stuck out to him was that Dylan's father, Mark, didn't seem very interested in finding his son. In fact,
While the majority of the search was going on, Mark stayed inside while everyone else suffered in the cold. He never once came out to speak to the searchers or anything. That first night, he even went home early and turned off all the lights like he was going to bed.
Roy said that this was strange because usually when a child goes missing, the parents will leave a light on. That way if their child comes home, they'll know that they're home and they're expecting them. But not Mark Redwine. Interestingly, a neighbor of Mark's actually came forward and said that on the morning Dylan went missing,
Early that morning at around 2:00 AM, she noticed the lights at Mark's house were on. But the next night, the night Dylan is officially missing, they're off.
On the second day of the search, there were hundreds of people volunteering to help. An entire Facebook page was created so that the community could get updates about everything going on. But one thing everyone couldn't help but notice was how strange Dylan's dad, Mark, was acting. As the searchers are combing through the area, Mark, once again, isn't helping. In fact, he was even seen sitting on his porch sipping on a cup of coffee while the entire community was out in the cold looking for his son.
Now, sadly, that second day would come and go, and there was still no sign of 13-year-old Dylan. By then, hundreds of people within the community began climbing the mountains of Durango, walking the rugged terrain with their sticks and their maps. Some people even used four-wheelers. It seemed like everyone in town was coming together to find him. Kathy Berry, a volunteer searcher, recorded this as they walked around the dam. And we're walking along the edges of this road.
Trying to find possibly Dylan's backpack. Dylan's mom is in front of me and she's doing pretty good. She's holding it together pretty good. And you guys are friends of Dylan's, right? Right. And Ryan, you were the last person to talk to Dylan on Sunday night, right? Yes. And so tell me what was going on. You guys were just texting and... He sounded really excited to come over. He was actually supposed to stay the night, but...
So anything else you guys want to say about your friend Dylan? Yeah, hope he comes home soon.

- Anatomy of Lies, streaming now only on Peacock. - It was all a lie. - As the days passed with no sign of Dylan, his mom Elaine began to fear the worst. She would later say, "We always tried to keep hope because I felt if I lost hope, then everyone else would as well. But you know, as a mom, you know in the back of your mind that it's not going to end good." And to her, something wasn't adding up here.
By this point in the investigation, investigators were able to pull up Dylan's phone records and they showed that on the night he arrived in Durango, he was texting his friend Ryan. They also saw that he had been texting a girl named Amanda Saxton. Amanda and Dylan had been friends since the fourth grade and he often referred to her by a nickname he had given her.
Kitty. A little after 9pm, Dylan told Amanda that he was watching the movie Adventureland. Then he texted her, "Kitty Kitty Kitty is pimping." Typical teenage slang. But strangely enough, after texting Amanda at 9:46pm, Dylan's phone stopped all activity completely. There were no texts, no calls, no roaming the internet, nothing.
It was as if his phone had broken, and this was strange considering he was a teenager who was attached to his phone. His mom Elaine also said that he was a night owl. On days that he didn't have school, he would be up all night long. And Mark himself said that Dylan had stayed up until 4am. So the fact that he stopped using his phone at 9.40pm just didn't add up.
by this point investigators are growing more and more suspicious of mark redwine and interestingly two days into dylan's disappearance detectives get an unprompted call from mark's ex-wife the woman he married before elaine her name was betsy and the two actually had two grown children together
But that morning, Betsy called investigators and told them that she believed, based on comments Mark had made in the past, that he would have dumped Dylan's body in the mountains. In fact, when they were camping once, he made a comment about how the mountains would be a great spot to dump a body.
Betsy also said that Mark was a violent man who, in the past, had threatened to kill the children that they had together. Betsy knew Mark Redwine well, and she believed he was dangerous. And upon hearing of Dylan's disappearance, she immediately thought he was responsible. So with all this information, detectives set up an interview with him. Now, before this interview...
detectives had pulled the security footage from the airport and Walmart so they could track Dylan's last known movements. And as they are watching, they can almost feel the tension between Dylan and Mark through the screen. It's obvious Dylan didn't want to be there. So during Mark Redwine's interrogation, they mention this. Mark admitted that things were a little off when he first picked Dylan up, but soon enough they started warming up to each other.
Once they got home, he said they even started roughhousing a bit, like fathers and sons do. When the detectives asked how, Mark said that he tackled Dylan onto the couch, but it was all playful, he said. Now, detectives asked Mark multiple times if Dylan accidentally got hurt while they were roughhousing, but he said no, Dylan was not hurt.
So it's at this point in the interview when detectives ask Mark what he thinks happened to Dylan. And he suggests that Dylan ran away. Why, you may ask? Well, Mark said it was because Dylan had been having problems with his mom. He was tired of living with her, so he ran away. Even further, Mark also added that he believed Elaine had something to do with his disappearance.
even though she was six hours away in Colorado Springs. Obviously, it's no secret that I believe that Elaine could be involved in this. You know, I don't know how she would do it. I don't know who else she would have involved with it. But I can't help but think that there's a possibility that she had some involvement. So to cross all of their T's and dot their I's, investigators gave polygraphs to both Elaine and Mark. Elaine ended up passing hers, but Mark failed his polygraph.
And specifically, when asked the question, do you know where Dylan is? His results show deception. Now keep in mind, polygraphs are not admissible in court. So this didn't really prove anything. However, it did point investigators in the right direction. Following this, they tried scheduling another interview for the following day. But Mark must have felt the heat because he didn't show up for it.
Thanksgiving of 2012 would come and go, but no one in Durango was celebrating. In fact, hundreds of people spent their holiday out in the cold looking for Dylan Redwine.
By November 26th, one week into the disappearance, the FBI finally got involved, and Dylan's family was still holding on to hope that he would be coming home. You know, every day I wake up and Dylan's not home, and it's just another empty day. I choose hope for Dylan because, you know, as a mother, it's very difficult to deal with something like this, but...
By then, the city of Durango was filled with missing persons flyers, billboards, and there was even a reward of $50,000 to anyone who could provide more information about Dylan's whereabouts. Then, on November 27th, a vigil was held. Here's some audio of people speaking at the vigil.
Loving God, we pray first and most of all for Dylan. We know that you are aware of where he is and what his needs are. And so we pray for him now. When I think of the word Dylan, the first thing that comes to my mind is perfect. And for this to happen to him is just horrible because he doesn't deserve it.
Now, even though Dylan's father hadn't been present during the searches, he made sure to show up for this. It clearly wouldn't have been a good look if he hadn't. By now, there had been some whispers about his potential involvement. So everyone was surprised when he grabbed the microphone to say a few words. Some people in the crowd even noted that he referred to Dylan in the past tense. I want everybody to know how much I love that boy and how much I cared about him. He was such a wonderful boy.
He meant everything. And unfortunately, his mom and I don't see eye to eye on things. And I wish that could change.
It was now a week into Dylan's disappearance, and he was still nowhere to be found. The Mountain Lake Dam, where Mark said Dylan could have been fishing, was thoroughly searched and Dylan wasn't there. And by now, everyone feared the absolute worst. No one wanted to say it out loud, but it was likely that Dylan had passed. His best friend Ryan Nava said that the week after Dylan's disappearance was one of the hardest things he had ever had to go through. Worrisome.
The only thing that me and my friends wanted to do was be together, just because we couldn't find Dylan. And the only topic on my friend's mind, my parents' mind, was Dylan. It was a hard time because we had a brother missing.
By this point, Mark Redwine's son from his previous marriage decided to bring his family from Arizona to help in the search. His name is Brandon Redwine, and his mother was the one who called the police warning them about Mark.
Now, like the rest of his children, Brandon also had a strained relationship with his father. But hearing that Dylan was missing, he knew he needed to come to Durango to help look. So as soon as he got there, he got together with Dylan's older brother, Corey, and his dad's brother, David. And together, they all started putting together a search plan. However, Brandon immediately noticed that his dad wasn't eager to help.
He would later say, "It was frustrating. This is your son. Get involved." Then one day while they were searching, Brandon and his dad were driving around an area called Meadow Mountain Road. But just 20 minutes into the search, Mark turned around and said, "Dylan's not up here.
Brandon thought this was strange as they had barely even searched the area and it was at that moment where Brandon said, "Mark knows something. I didn't know what he knew. I didn't know how he knew it." By then, everyone that had encountered Mark said the same thing, that they somehow knew he was involved. So it's at this point where Dylan's mom Elaine decided to go public with her suspicions.
My gut feeling is that Dylan's dad had something to do or knows something more than he's giving us information about. I wish he would talk to us, but he won't do that.
On November 29th, 2012, 10 days into Dylan's disappearance, the FBI was finally able to help get a search warrant for Mark's home. When Mark answered the door that morning, detectives said his eyes were bloodshot and he looked disheveled. They informed Mark that they had a warrant for his home and that if anything happened to Dylan inside of it, they were about to find out.
And interestingly, it's here where Mark decided to offer up a bit of information he had previously left out.
He tells the FBI agents that on the night Dylan arrived in Durango, Dylan had been dripping blood from a cold sore on his lip. Now, the agents immediately don't believe this story. So they tell Mark that if that's true, they'll figure it out. They said they were going to talk to the flight attendants he saw and everyone else who had seen Dylan that day to verify if he had a cold sore. And hearing this, Mark decides to change his story again.
Now he says that Dylan didn't have a cold sore. He had actually hurt his lip on a Nerf football. And that's why he was dripping blood. And with that, the FBI descends upon Mark's home. With them was a cadaver dog named Molly who was very skilled at her job.
That day, she was there to find any signs of human remains. As Molly sniffed through the home, she suddenly stopped at the garage and signaled to her owner, Karen Gummine. Karen would later say, "There's a large amount of human remains odor detected on the exterior of that property." Molly also alerted to the odor of human remains in the bed of Mark's Dodge pickup truck outside.
Then, while inside of the house, Molly signaled seven different times on the first floor of Mark's home. In total, from both the inside and outside of Mark's house, she signaled to the odor of human remains 43 times. A lot of these alerts were in the living room, so investigators did a luminol test, and it's there that...
where they found blood in five different locations around the room, including on Mark's couch, the love seat, coffee table, and on the floor beneath the carpet. Now, something to note is that there was no blood on the carpet, just beneath it, meaning Mark Redwine must have cleaned it up, not realizing the blood had seeped through. Now again, Mark claimed that this blood came from Dylan getting hit in the lip with a Nerf football,
But investigators knew that wasn't true. For one, those footballs are made out of foam, so they wouldn't have caused an injury like that. In reality, the blood found around Mark's living room likely came from something far more sinister. The blood samples were taken in as evidence, and just as everyone feared, the DNA matched Dylan Redwine.
Now, this evidence was huge, but it was still not enough to make an arrest. After all, they hadn't found Dylan, and with no body, they couldn't even prove that he was dead. So investigators bring Mark in for another interview. This time, they ask Mark again what he thinks happened to Dylan. He says he didn't think Dylan would have been kidnapped given the secluded location of his house. So the investigator says, well, what do you think happened? An animal attack? Was he attacked by a bear?
and the investigators said it was the strangest thing upon saying this mark actually lit up with excitement agreeing that that's probably what happened the detective said this made him uncomfortable what parent gets excited over the thought of their child getting eaten by a bear the day after the search warrant was executed mark redwine once again talked to reporters about his innocence and throughout the entire thing he had this strange smile on his face
Thank you so much for speaking with me on camera, Mark. You're welcome. What's it been like? Well, it's been a tough time for all of us, I know. I know that it's been difficult on me, and I can only imagine how difficult it's been for his mom and his brother and his family over in the Colorado Springs area. And, you know, we're doing everything we can to try to find Dylan, and we want to keep the focus on finding Dylan. And, you know, I've been working with the investigators to make sure that
You know, all the bases are being covered on that end. And, you know, that's pretty much where I'm at with that. I mean, I'm doing everything I know how to do. I want to get this subject out of the way first. There's a lot of suspicion out there, even when Elaine went on ABC News. Right. Can you address that? Well, I can only imagine being a mother the frustration that,
of hearing about your son going missing and you know I can only think that that has to do with lashing out and trying to find who's accountable for this in this situation. You know I've been working closely with the investigators to
do what needed to be done because you know he was last seen at my house. I know there's rumors going around that he's been spotted by people and you know our concern is that you know something has happened to the point now where we just want to keep in the public's eye you
Dylan's face and keep the focus on Dylan and don't worry about me and everything's going to be alright on my end but I know this is only a troubling time for Elaine and my son Corey and I spoke with him last night and I'm surprised that we have been able to hook up today because one of the things that we're trying to do is unite
together and I have my oldest son from the Phoenix area here and of course my brother's here so we're trying to unite as a family and stay focused on what's important here and you know everybody wants to focus on me but the focus isn't me right now the focus is finding Dylan and that's where I'm at.
Why do you think people want to focus on you? Well, because I think it's just a natural part of the process. And I think because, you know, he was last seen with me and he was with me the night before. And, you know, I saw him the morning that I left to go run my errands. You know, that's the logical place to start. And so it doesn't at all surprise me.
you know that they searched my home yesterday because quite frankly I was expecting that to happen a week ago so you know my opinion is we're all a week late and where we're at with this in that so really the focus is you know what do we need to be doing now to keep searching for Dylan and bring him home you have anything directly to say to Dylan Dylan my prayers are with you and I love you very much he was the light of my life and he he meant everything to me
And I just want him home just like everybody else does. And that's why, you know, we got to keep searching for him because somebody knows something. We got to find him and we need to know that he's okay. Sadly, over the next month, the investigation remained at a standstill. Eventually, Christmas would come and go.
and then 2012 would turn to 2013. Law enforcement and the community never stopped looking for Dylan, and they did everything they could to keep his name alive, but there was still no sign of him. In January, more than a dozen protesters stood outside of Mark's home holding signs that read, "Where is Dylan? We will never stop looking for Dylan." And in a message to Mark,
There were even signs that read, you know, start talking. As the protesters stood outside of his house, they chanted, bring Dylan home. His mom, Elaine, and older brother, Corey, were at this protest. And while there, Corey spoke to reporters about his dad's strange behavior. Well, right now, you know, I'm...
By then,
Just about everyone knew that Mark was responsible for Dylan's disappearance. But the main question was why?
What motive did Mark have to murder his son? Well, Dylan's brother, Corey, would speak with investigators to help shed some light on a possible motive. And what he would tell them would shock everyone. So let's rewind to the year 2011, back to a simpler time when things weren't as tense between Mark and his sons. That year, Mark had planned to take Corey and Dylan on a road trip to Cleveland, Ohio.
By then, Cory was already an adult living on his own, but he thought it would be nice to take a trip with his little brother. So they all hop in the car and take off for Ohio. Eventually, the three would stop at a hotel for the night, and Cory decided to step outside and call his girlfriend. Back inside the hotel room, Mark got into bed and fell asleep.
leaving Dylan in there bored and wide awake. So like most teenagers, Dylan decided that he was going to surf the web
He grabbed his dad's computer, opened it up, and after a few clicks, something popped up on the screen. It was photos of his dad, but these weren't just any photos. Trigger warning, this next part is disturbing, but the photos he found were sexual in nature, and some of them, Mark was wearing women's clothing. But as Dylan continued to scroll through,
He found other pictures of his dad wearing diapers. Then beneath those were pictures of his dad with feces all over his mouth. In some, Mark was photographing himself eating feces out of a diaper. Now we will be posting these pictures on our Patreon, but just a warning, they are pretty disgusting to look at. And as you can imagine, as Dylan is seeing this, he couldn't believe it.
From that moment on, he would never be able to look at his dad the same. I mean, how could he? And it's soon after this when his brother Corey comes back into the hotel room after his phone call and Dylan quickly runs over with the computer and pulls Corey into the bathroom. He was pretty disgusted. It was something that he kind of had to try to contain himself. When we found the pictures, we were in the
the hotel room with Mark at the time and Mark was sleeping and Dylan was on his laptop and I walked into the room. I had a conversation with my current wife just checking up on her since I was on the road and when I walked into the room Dylan just kind of grabbed my attention, was trying to be quiet but obviously was in
While in the hotel bathroom, Dylan shows Corey the pictures he found on his dad's computer. And like Dylan, Corey cannot believe what he's looking at. They were both horrified. And for the both of them, it changed the way they viewed their father.
Not knowing what to do, Corey pulled out his phone and snapped some photos of the horrifying images, likely just to document what they had seen. But neither of the brothers brought it up to their dad. I mean, how could they? They had just stumbled upon a horrific dark secret.
one that they would never be able to forget. And like Corey said, Dylan lost a lot of respect for his dad, but according to the custody agreement, he still had to go visit him from time to time. So now you can see why Dylan wasn't happy about having to go visit Mark. - Now Corey would end up telling investigators about this incident. They too were shocked.
But that's not the only story he has for them. Corey admitted that a few months prior to Dylan's disappearance, in the summer of 2012, Mark and Dylan had taken that road trip to Boston
to watch the Red Sox game. By then, Corey and his dad were not on great terms, so he decided to stay in Colorado. But soon after Dylan and Mark arrived in Boston, Corey noticed he had a lot of missed calls from his brother. He was watching a movie at the time, so instead of calling him back, he just texted Dylan and asked what's going on. Dylan quickly texted back saying, quote,
Hey, dad just told me about how he found some beer bottles back at home and he's calling you a bad example. Now, apparently Corey had been drinking at Mark's house and Mark found the evidence. And now while in Boston, he's telling Dylan that his older brother is a bad influence. And this upset Dylan. He really looked up to his brother.
He also felt like his dad was constantly talking bad about his brother and mom. So he was upset, especially because in Dylan's mind, Cory was not a bad influence. If anything, he thought Mark was the bad influence after finding those photos on his computer.
So in that moment, Dylan texts his brother and says, quote, "Send me those poop pics of Papa. He gave me a speech about you guys being a bad example, and I want to show him what he really is." Now, when Corey reads this, he decides not to send Dylan the pictures. Instead, he just puts his phone away. But over the next few minutes, Dylan texts him several more times asking for the photos.
He clearly wants to make a point to his father, but Corey knew that the two were in Boston together and he didn't want to escalate things. So he waited until the following day to text Dylan back. Corey writes, "How you doing?" Dylan responds that he's fine. As it turns out, Dylan never ended up mentioning anything about the photographs to his father.
But Corey was angry with his dad after hearing that Mark was talking bad about him. So not wanting to put Dylan in the middle of it, Corey texts Mark himself and he actually sends him the pictures he took from his computer. Corey also sends off some heated messages. On August 5th, 2012, when you sent those photographs, you also wrote some things, right? Yes. Said to your father, hey, beautiful, right? Yes.
He said you are what you eat look in the mirror, right? Yes called your dad out for judging me, correct? Yes, that was in part your reaction to dylan saying you'd been called a bad example, right? And you said oh and sweetie. This is corey, right? Yes, told him to quote eat shit Yes, told him he was a coward correct? Yes called him a shit eater, right? Yes, he said pull yourself
Pull yourself to eat shit, right? Yes. You called him nasty. Yes. Said the pics were the nastiest thing you'd ever seen. Yes. Called him a shit-eating coward, right? Yes. Told him he was a sperm donor. Yes. Said you'd talk more shit than you eat, right? Yes. Told him to lick shit off your shoe.
So, as you can see, Corey and Mark's relationship was at the point of no return. And with these messages, Mark now knew that Corey had discovered his dark secret.
but Mark had no idea that Dylan already knew. He even texted Corey back that day and said, "Please don't hurt Dylan. He doesn't deserve to be hurt anymore. If you care about Dylan, why do you want to see him hurt?" End quote. It's clear that Mark really didn't want Corey telling his little brother about the pictures, but unbeknownst to Mark, Dylan already knew. In fact, he was the one who found them.
Now, fast forward to the start of 2013. Dylan has now been missing for nearly two months. And Corey can't shake the thought that maybe Dylan finally confronted his dad about those pictures. Dylan was really the only family member Mark had left. All of his other children didn't talk to him. And when he flew up to Durango, it was clear Dylan didn't want to be there.
The security footage of the two showed there was obvious tension between the father and son. Dylan was also upset that Mark wouldn't let him see his friends that night. Maybe once they got back to the house, Dylan decided to confront him. Then in a fit of rage, Mark Redwine killed his son. Now when investigators hear this story from Corey, they too believe that this is likely what happened. There's the motive they had been looking for.
And then they have the fact that Dylan's phone stopped all activity around 9:30 that night. And then finally, they have Dylan's blood throughout Mark's house. So now more than ever, investigators are confident that Mark Redwine murdered Dylan. But again, they can't make any arrests just yet. Convicting someone of murder without finding a body is never easy.
So, they wait. It's not a surprise to anyone that when more searches and fundraisers are conducted, Mark doesn't show up. On February 6th, for Dylan's 14th birthday, the community came together to celebrate his life. But again, Mark wasn't there. Then surprisingly, a few weeks later, Mark Redwine agrees to go on the Dr. Phil show with his son, Corey, and ex-wife, Elaine.
I think Mark has something to do with it. I think he's either got him heading out or, you know, done something and disposed. I think, I strongly think that he's involved. Why? He hasn't done a single thing since Dylan has been gone.
Why do you say that? What has he not done? He hasn't been to any of the benefits. He wasn't there for Dylan's birthday vigil. He hasn't helped at all with the Fine Missing Dylan Redwine Fund. And that's offensive to you? Very. Dylan didn't really look up to Mark. They had a relationship, but it was never what Dylan had wanted. It was always what Mark had wanted, which was always to be on the road. Never there.
Why do you call your father Mark instead of dad or father? Because he's not a father to me. A father is someone who cares for their kids and, you know, would do anything for them. Be a role model. Someone to look up to. I believe that you're being very disrespectful, and I believe that everything that's coming out of your mouth is perpetuated by your father. I have my own mouth. I can say my own words. Then use it. I am at you. I don't like you. I hate you. And you have been nothing of a father since the last 10 years.
And Dylan's birthday, even though he's not here to celebrate it with us, where were you? Here is Elaine. You're his father. How could you do this to him? Elaine, I don't have, I don't know where Dylan is. I haven't had anything to do with this. I don't believe, I know that's a lie. I know you had something to do with this. Yes.
Yes. Where's the last... You were the last one to see him, okay? I don't believe that that's true. Well, I don't care what you believe. I don't have Dylan. I wish I had Dylan. Because if I had Dylan, we wouldn't be on the Dr. Phil show, okay? I wish I had Dylan, too. But that's not... Did you hurt him? No, Elaine, I wouldn't hurt him. What kind of mother are you to even think that I was capable of doing something like that? I was your wife for 18 years. I brought you all the way to Dr. Phil to speak with you because you won't speak with me.
What I care about is finding this child. Which is all I care about. Did you take a polygraph in this matter? I did. Did police ask you to take a polygraph? They did. And what were the results? Well, there's been some conflict as to what the actual results are. Well, what did they tell you? Well, they told me that I failed it.
And once again, Mark would continue to point the blame elsewhere, even claiming that Elaine was responsible for Dylan's disappearance. I personally have a lot of suspicions that Elaine could be involved in this, but I don't have anything to back that up and I don't have anything to support that. Do you honestly believe that from six hours away that she put him on an airplane and flew him to you
and then somehow or another trailed behind and abducted him from your couch? Is that your theory? Well, I don't believe that she did it alone. I believe that it's possible that she had helped do that. Okay, so you actually think that she and a team...
Now, Dr. Phil tried to get Mark to take another polygraph exam with his team, but Mark was very apprehensive at first. He said he wanted to go home and rest, but he ultimately agreed to take one the following morning. So Dr. Phil's team set up the polygraph, but when it came time to take it, Mark changed his mind. Mark also criticized the Dr. Phil show for not allocating enough resources to finding Dylan, and Dr. Phil tore into him.
And I read some of the stuff you said about you don't think that we gave enough attention to finding Dylan yesterday. Are you kidding me? I devoted two hours of national television time to try to find your son.
And I have asked you to do things to eliminate yourself so we can direct resources to other people and you won't do one damn thing to help. And you want to criticize what we're doing?
I am here to find your son. And I frankly don't give a damn whether you like me or my television show. I care whether or not we find this boy. And if you've got information about where that boy is, you need to tell us. This man's done 3,500 polygraphs. You know how many fathers with missing sons have ever, ever refused to take a polygraph? In all of his years of doing polygraph work, you know how many have done what you've done?
Zero. You, Mark, you're it. And you may be wondering, what was Mark's response to those photographs Dylan found on his computer? Well, he told the world that they were photoshopped. I believe that Elaine and Corey were coming into my house and rummaging through my things and going through my personal belongings when I traveled out of town. I came up with a scheme that had to be so outrageous that they could not talk about it. And that's exactly what I got out of that. Did I...
Now, like you would expect, nothing really came from going on the Dr. Phil show, other than spreading the word about Dylan's disappearance. And for the next few months, there was still no sign of Dylan Redwine. Soon enough, spring would turn to summer, and the searches for Dylan continued.
With the improved weather conditions, everyone was hopeful that they would find something out there. If it wasn't his body, maybe they could at least find his backpack or cell phone. So Elaine and Corey were constantly in Durango to help in the searches. And interestingly enough, Corey and his stepdad Michael said they were out driving around one morning when they saw Mark's vehicle leaving an area called Middle Mountain Road, which was less than 10 miles away from his house.
Now, Mark didn't have any business being in the area, so they were suspicious. Even further, when they spotted him, Mark started speeding away. So with that, Corey knew deep down that this is where they needed to search. And they would. During the first few weeks of June, the search teams got together and began making their way through the vast and rugged terrain.
They also tried calling Mark Redwine that week, but he refused to answer any of their calls or emails. Mark would later say that his phone was broken during that time, but many believe that it's because Mark was nervous, as the searchers were getting close.
On June 25th, 2013, after weeks of searching this area, search teams found a black and white Nike Air Jordan, size 7 Youth, lying in the woods. The shoes appeared to be the same ones Dylan was wearing in the Walmart security footage. They also discovered black earbuds and a shredded piece of a white sock shirt. But then they found the bones.
a set of partial human remains including leg bones and a clavicle, all of which were confirmed to be Dylan Redwine's. After 1600 man hours of searching and six months after his disappearance, Dylan Redwine had finally been located 8.6 miles away from his father's home.
7 News starts with breaking news. The remains of 13-year-old Dylan Redwine have been found. Crews searching Middle Mountain near Viacito Lake making that sad discovery. The teenager's been missing since last November. 7 News reporter Mark Stewart working this breaking news, and Mark, his remains found very close to his father's home. Mike, less than 10 miles away from his father's home. Take a look. This is the Facebook page set up by the volunteers who had their own effort to find him. On the front...
Pardon me. On the front there is a message, a heartbreaking message about today's discovery. This high and rugged terrain up to 11,000 feet is where search teams found Dylan's remains. These are photos from the five-day search. For weeks this area was off limits because it was covered with snow. The bones and other items found were tested by the CBI. Scientists then determined the remains belonged to Dylan.
Interestingly, when Dylan first went missing, his family tried to search this area with Mark, but after about 20 minutes, he randomly turned the car around and said, Dylan isn't here. But he was there all along. With this discovery, his mom Elaine was now coming to terms with her greatest fear, that her son was dead. That week, the community of Durango grieved right along with her.
And on June 29th, they held a candlelight vigil. There was always something that I was learning from him. You never know when the one person that you thought would always be with you, by your side, walk and talk with you, would, you know, suddenly just be gone one day. This past year has been a struggle. I've struggled.
With the events that have taken place and why this happened to Dylan. But this story was far from over. Yes, they now had some of the answers they were looking for, but not all of them. They still didn't even have all of Dylan's remains. And they knew exactly who could give them those answers. Here's a phone call between Mark Redwine and Detective Tonya Goldbright. Hey Mark, it's Tonya. Hi, how are you? I'm wonderful, how are you?
Oh, I'm living the dream. The dream. The dream. Are you intoxicated, Mark? Nope. Not at all. Okay, then why are you talking to me like that? Because... Because... You can't seem to think no deeper than the serpent. Because I'll be honest with you, Tonya. I don't think you're capable of handling a situation like that. Really? Don't you think it's pretty amazing we found any remains up on Middle Mountain?
In the middle of nowhere? Yes, it does. He's dead. We know that now. If we hadn't gone up there and looked, we wouldn't have known that. I'd like to find the rest of him, but yes, we know what happened. We know he's no longer with us. Unfortunately,
With the bones that were found of Dylan's, they still couldn't prove how Dylan died, meaning they still couldn't make an arrest. They desperately searched that area hoping to find his skull, but they weren't able to find it. Without a cause of death, they couldn't prove that Dylan had been murdered. So, Mark walked around free. But about a month after these partial remains were found, Mark Redwine came forward with the discovery he made.
You know how in the beginning he claimed that Dylan likely went missing near that lake by his house? Well, he said that because when he went through his home, he noticed Dylan's fishing pole was missing. So because of this, they spent months looking around that lake. But now, in July of 2013, Mark tells the authorities that he suddenly found Dylan's fishing pole.
He said it must have fallen in his garage because he found it lying behind his washing machine. And when investigators hear this, they are extremely suspicious because they looked everywhere in Mark's house and that fishing pole was not there.
But now, suddenly, it is. Investigators suspected that Mark had hidden the fishing pole so he could lead the search far away from Dylan's remains. But now that Dylan's bones were found on this mountain, miles away from the lake, it doesn't make sense that his fishing pole would be missing. So now it suddenly reappeared in his garage. It's also around this time when Mark started speaking with the media about his new theory
on what happened to Dylan. Now he thinks that Dylan was walking around in the woods when a hunter mistakenly shot him, thinking he was game. Another theory that no one believed. Soon enough, it was November of 2013, the year anniversary of Dylan's disappearance. It had been a rough year for the city of Durango.
And even though they finally had some answers, it was extremely unsettling that there were no arrests in the case. And the community began to turn on Mark. In May of 2014, the local media received a tip that Mark Redwine had checked into a hospital due to overwhelming paranoia. After Dylan's partial remains were found, Mark found himself being stalked by people who believed he was a murderer. And he was constantly being monitored by the police. Apparently, the
the stress for Mark was too much and he found himself self-medicating with alcohol and had been taken by ambulance to Denver Health for observation. Deep down, everyone in town knew that Mark was responsible for Dylan's death, but there was nothing anyone could do until they found the rest of Dylan's remains. And that wouldn't come until November of 2015, almost three years to the day that Dylan went missing.
That afternoon, two hikers named Daniel Foster and his wife Leah were walking near the Vallecito Reservoir, which is miles away from where the other bones were found. Daniel and Leah had recently moved to the area, and they decided to go explore. Along their hike, they stepped off the beaten path, and up ahead something caught their eye. Daniel actually picked it up, not knowing what it was. But soon enough, they realized that they had just come across a human skull.
After reporting the discovery to the police, investigators went to the area and took the skull in as evidence and it wouldn't take them long to confirm that it was indeed the skull of Dylan Redwine
They also found that the skull had evidence of blunt force trauma and there was damage caused by a sharp tool, leading them to believe he had been hit in the head and then stabbed in the head. There was also evidence that animals had scavenged on his remains. But now that Dylan's death was officially ruled a homicide, you would think an arrest would be right around the corner. However, that wasn't the case.
Despite everything they had against Mark Redwine, the DA at the time didn't think there was enough for an indictment. So for another two years, Dylan's case remained unsolved. It was incredibly disappointing for Dylan's family and the community. But luckily, in the summer of 2017, La Plata County got a new DA named Christian Champagne.
And one of his main priorities was to bring this case to a grand jury. And that's exactly what would happen. And finally, after five long years, an arrest warrant was written up for Mark Redwine. Here is the body cam footage of his arrest in Washington State. Just keep your hands up. Don't move, okay? Do not move. You guys can? You want to explain to me what's going on? Yes, sir.
Is your name Mark? Once Mark was handcuffed and read his Miranda rights, he truly tried to claim that he had no idea why he was being arrested. The reason why you're in handcuffs right now is because we received a call from an agency in Colorado. Is it Washington County or is it... Okay. And...
What had happened is they had got information that you were potentially up here and they say that they had a warrant for murder second for you. I'm sorry? I have no idea what that's about. Okay. He has no idea what that's about. Sure, Mark. Now from here, he was extradited back to Colorado and held on a $1 million cash bond.
But over the next few years, his trial would have many delays due to rescheduling and of course the COVID-19 pandemic. But finally, in June of 2021, nearly nine years after Dylan's murder, Mark Redwine would face a jury of his peers. He of course would plead not guilty and the prosecution was fighting for a second degree murder conviction and a charge of child abuse resulting in death.
Mark's defense team claimed that Dylan was not murdered. They said that on the morning of November 12th, 2012, Dylan got up and left his dad's house on his own free will. They claimed that he was running away. And while he was doing so, he likely came across a bear. And in a gruesome attack, Dylan was killed.
To them, that's why his skull showed evidence of trauma. That's also why his bones were scattered in different areas. But the prosecution would later question this. They argued that if Dylan was even alive on the morning of November 19th, then why wouldn't he have used his phone? He never once thought to text his friends and tell them he wasn't coming over anymore.
Mark also claimed that Dylan had been up since 4:00 a.m. that morning. But why did all of his phone activity stop around 9:30 the night before if he was alive and well? The prosecution also claimed that Dylan did not run away.
Clearly, he wasn't happy being at his dad's house, but if things got really bad, he definitely would have just called his mom or brother. It's also important to note that Dylan's remains were found almost nine miles away from his dad's house. So the thought of him walking that far in the middle of November without ever calling anyone just didn't add up. But for argument's sake,
Let's just say Dylan was walking around in the wilderness, and while out he came across a bear, like the defense claims. If that was the case, then why were his backpack and cell phone never found? Bears have no reason to take those items, so they should have been found on or even near Dylan's remains. But to this day, neither have ever been found.
the prosecution also brought forward a wildlife biologist named heather johnson who testified that it was extremely unlikely that dylan would have been attacked by a bear heather extensively studied bear behavior from 2011 to 2017 and according to her bear attacks in that area at that time of year are almost unheard of by november most bears are already in hibernation saying they're not looking for food that late in the season we don't have bear conflicts in november generally
She also talked about how parts of Dylan's remains were found five miles from one another. Defense said that this was likely from animal scavenging, but according to Heather, bears rarely carry their prey long distances. It is possible, but she admitted, that kind of thinking would be almost the rarest circumstances I've ever seen. So in conclusion, her professional opinion was that it was highly unlikely that Dylan was attacked by a bear that day. When it came time for the prosecution's argument...
They laid out the deteriorating relationship between Mark and Dylan. When Dylan found those photos on his dad's computer, he would never be able to look at Mark the same. The father who he once loved and respected wasn't there anymore. Now, when Dylan looked at his dad, he was disgusted. I'm sure the image of those photographs were hard to forget. Photos of his dad in women's clothing, eating feces out of a diaper.
Pictures of his dad with poop smeared all over his face and mouth. Even before Dylan saw those pictures, his relationship with Mark was strained. But then when he saw that, everything changed. However, as much as Dylan preferred to stay with his mom, he was forced to go visit his dad through that court order.
Dylan didn't have a choice. In the months before his death, he made it obvious that he wanted to confront his dad about what he found. That summer, he texted his brother Cory and said, "Send me those poop pics of Papa. I want to show him what he really is." But Dylan didn't confront his dad that day. Instead, he started to pull away from him. That fall, Mark had texted his son 11 different times.
but each of the messages went unanswered. By November of that year, Dylan was very vocal about not wanting to visit his dad for Thanksgiving, and Mark could sense that his son was pulling away from him. The prosecution would later say, "The defendant was an angry and isolated father who was losing contact with the only family member still willing to engage with him, and that family member was only willing to be with him
because the court ordered him to do so." So on November 18th, 2012, Dylan flew to Durango to meet his dad, but it was not a happy reunion. By looking at the security footage, there was clearly tension between the two. And we know that Dylan was upset with Mark
because he wouldn't let him stay with his friends that night. But what we don't know is exactly what happened once they got back to Mark's house. The prosecution believes that Dylan and Mark got into an argument. And maybe it's here where Dylan finally decided to confront his dad about those photographs. And in a fit of rage, knowing he's about to lose the only person still in his life,
Mark snaps. The prosecution believes that Mark may have slammed Dylan's head into the coffee table. Based on how the blood was spread out around the living room, it's possible that Dylan tried running away from his father. But Mark was bigger, he was stronger, and it's here where they believed he grabbed a knife. Based on the sharp force injuries to Dylan's skull, Mark likely stabbed Dylan in the head.
killing him. And then, after realizing what he had done, Mark begins to panic. A second-degree murder means that there was no planning involved here. Mark killed Dylan in a fit of rage, and now he has to hide the body. Later, the smell of human remains was found in Mark's house, garage, and the bed of his truck.
So it's believed that Mark put his son in the bed of his truck and dumped his body out in the mountains. They also believe that Mark removed Dylan's head from his body and dumped his skull in a different location so that if his partial remains were ever found, they wouldn't be able to tell his cause of death.
Mark's neighbor would later come forward and say that the lights to his home were on past 2:00 a.m. So dumping Dylan's body would have taken him hours. Mark also got rid of Dylan's backpack and cell phone, leaving no trace of his son behind. At trial, Mark's ex-wife Betsy talked about how Mark told her once, while they were camping, that the mountains would be a great place to hide a body.
And clearly, they were. It would be years before Dylan's body was found, another secret that Mark tried to keep hidden. But eventually, all of Mark's dark secrets came to light. Not only were his disturbing photographs seen around the world, but his son's remains were also found. And based on the evidence, they proved that Dylan Redwine had been murdered.
But now it was the jury's turn to decide if Dylan had been killed by a bear or by his own father. Guilty of count number one. Be quiet, please. Count number two, child abuse. We, the jury, find the defendant, Mark Redwine, guilty of count two, child abuse. He knows what he did. He knows. I think he deserves to die. I mean, his son died.
And I think he needs an equally horrible death. Mark Redwine was found guilty of all charges in the murder of his youngest son, Dylan Redwine. The video showed Mark standing with his attorneys, and as the jury delivered their verdict, he remained emotionless and completely still. But as you could hear, the people in the courtroom were very relieved to hear that guilty verdict. And now it was time for the sentencing. During that time, Elaine and Corey were able to read their victim impact statements.
When I think about what happened that night, it breaks my heart to think about Dylan looking up at his dad knowing he's a killer. He is my killer. It breaks my heart. And I wonder, what were you thinking then when you saw his big old blue eyes? I mean, I don't even think that it fazed you. I'm just glad that we are free from you and that you will not be free to hurt us anymore. Thank you, Your Honor.
Mark may have physically taken him, and I can't change that. But what I can do is tell the world how a 13-year-old young man stood up to his then 50-year-old father and said all the things I regret never saying. Dylan is my hero and became more of a man in 13 years than Mark has in 60. Do you wish to tell me anything before setting him? No, Your Honor, I do not.
but red wine had expressed his thoughts on the trial in a statement to the probation office and here's prosecutor christian champaign this crime is aggravated on so many levels at every turn at every opportunity mark redwine has maximized and prolonged the suffering of everyone involved in this case especially dylan's family
but also this whole community the prosecution was seeking the maximum sentence which was 48 years in prison as mark stood up to receive his sentence he declined to make a statement but judge jeffrey wilson had a lot to say first of all you killed your son a 13 year old boy at 13 he's still a little boy as a father it's your obligation to protect your son to keep him from harm
and instead of that, you inflicted enough injury on him to kill him in your living room. After the passion of whatever caused you to act the way you did subsided, you didn't think about Dylan. You thought about yourself, you sanitized the crime scene, you hid Dylan's body, and you went so far as to remove his head from the rest of his body. There's only one reason to do that, and that's to try and avoid, if any remains were ever found, that Dylan would ever be identified.
You left his body to be scavenged by wild animals. Not caring that concealing Dylan's remains tremendously increased the trauma felt by this community, felt by Dylan's brothers, and felt by his mother. You continually lied about what happened, about your knowledge as to where Dylan's remains were hidden. You continue to lie despite the pain and trauma that that inflicted upon Dylan's brothers and his mother, Mr. Hall, and the entire community.
Your actions not only removed and deprived Dylan the opportunity to grow into a man he would he could have been. He's not able to get married, fall in love, have kids, and potentially have grandkids. You stole that joy from Dylan. You stole that joy from Corey and Brandon and Elaine. What they could have experienced watching Dylan to grow and mature into his full potential will never be known by them, and that's because of your actions.
The evidence against you is overwhelming. However, in your statement to the probation department or the pre-sentence report, you wrote the following, and this is a quote from what you wrote: "Innocent of all charges, miscarriage of justice, fake conviction, sham trial."
So there is no misunderstanding. I am exercising all my rights to appeal the court's rulings and challenge the biased jury's decision to convict with no evidence any crime was committed. I take this circumstance very seriously and want to make clear that I too have lost a child I love more than life itself. I will fight for true justice, not for myself but for Dylan. I have always shown remorse for the things that I am guilty of.
stand against fake justice." After all this time and listening to what occurred here in this trial, in this courtroom, you still take absolutely no responsibility for what you did to Dylan. I have trouble remembering a convicted criminal defendant that has shown such an utter lack of remorse for his criminal behavior.
These are all aggravating factors that leads me to believe that a lenient sentence would unduly depreciate the seriousness of your crimes and that you need significant punishment. The community needs to be protected from you. You need to be removed from society for a long period of time. I'm going to sentence you to 48 years on both counts
with five years of parole they are to be served concurrently after nearly a decade mark redwine finally got the justice he deserved and from there he was taken off to prison to serve his 48-year sentence he'll be eligible for parole on june 28 2052 when he's 91 years old his mandatory release date is set for june 28 2064. it's safe to assume that mark redwine will never get out of prison
Here's Elaine speaking with the media after the trial. The words we speak, they never resonate with Mark. And so it's just kind of a waste of words. And honestly, the last nine years, you know, just listening to all his lies and his silence, you know,
At this point, it was more about, you know, the peace I needed for myself and my family than any anger or resentment I have towards him. He can work that out for the next 48 years. With Mark in prison, Elaine and Corey could now start their healing, although it wouldn't be easy. As satisfying as it was to see Mark convicted, it doesn't bring Dylan back.
Today, Dylan Redwine would have been 25 years old, and his family often wonders what type of person he would be if he were still here. In an interview with the Durango Herald in 2022, Elaine said, quote, We talk about that all the time. Corey insists he'd be in college, but I think he would have graduated college by now.
Maybe majoring in something crazy like physics or engineering. Or sports science. Something along those lines. It's hard to try and think about what your child will be doing 10 years later. He was 13 when he left us. At 13, there's so many years that kind of define who you are as a man, as a person. You can only look from their past character.
He certainly was a stand-up kid, so I'm sure he would be a stand-up man as well.
