I said, caring who killed my mom? SHE said. I think .

IT was same.

who was saying ker and scared me.

So I.

Saw there was a confession. A lot of the things didn't make sense.

They created this bubble around the two of them that was voided of reality.

Yes, do I look a bad kid? I'm a good kid.

They would play out a lifetime movie.

Honey, your head around the thing like that.

you don't. I wonder, how is IT that? I didn't see .

IT IT was a murder that seemed simple to solve. There was a witness, even a confession. So why was the mystery growing by the minute? I'm less to hold. And this is deadline.

Here's Keith Morrison with down the rabid hole.

They were Young and foolish and drowned to their phones like mos, to a flame.

I just wants to live my life. I want .

You're on my mind of wanting to feel .

that love so badly you do anything. Keep IT.

You know how that happens. So the shakespeare Young lovers caught up in their overheated dramas. So fears, so intense, so dangerous.

Not blame me of things happen for a reason.

but all anyone knew when this drama began was contained in a different kind of phone.

Okay, now what's your name? Carry more thing.

IT was the middle the night, the middle of july in unbox, texas, just outside of fush ton, the tearful sixteen year old girl was pleading with nine one one to sent help. Somebody was in her house and was attacking her mother.

Everyday was here, my mom screams, stopped. okay? But as they break and as they just come in, they broke in.

So right away they have deputy constable fred hooper over there. And about all he knew was that a panache teenager had told nine one one her mother was being attacked.

My hearts is not known. What do we expect and still making at the suspects could possibly be on seeing.

But then the second deputy, IT, arrived, and he and hooper had prepared to confront what was possibly an ongoing crime drawn the whole thing right?

We started at the the .

side gate smallness .

fence backyard. They passed the trap l in a swing set, in a pilot bricks .

on the way, going to the back door, we noticed that there were two windows. They were broken. We got to the back door.

IT was open. So we made entry into the house. Straight in front was the kitchen. And as he walked into the .

back door to .

the right there was the living room .

and then a door to the main bedroom. And there he was lying on .

a water bed. He was covered .

in blood, but he sell a line.

which he had some val son.

SHE did not appear to be a could SHE .

had lacerations that .

we could see. Her name was marian Murphy. SHE was the mother of the girl who called nine one one deputy hoper cautiously moved .

through the house looking .

for the intruder was by then the victim's daughter. Her name was kerry had called her older brother Scott Murphy was twenty one years old, working overnights of the airport, doing electrical repairs.

And all he said was, someone broke into the house, and I think mom's hurt. I dropped everything in my hand.

every tool, uh, I dropped IT, and I made my way home, who was also working night .

when I got to my parent street. And there was fifteen the toy cop cars outside. That's when I knew something was bad.

So you're right out of the car. What happened?

I was very loud, very boisterous. Where's my mom .

was my sister .

Scott couldn't see that. Kerry was huddled up in deputy huber's car.

and an officer had advised me to step away from the house they wouldn't let me in. So I began to get aggressive, and I get very hds on with the officer. He was .

history, which I understood, because if I was me, I probably won't felt the same way at that point.

I was in tough and put in the back of a car.

and at the time .

I was very angry. I remember being in the back of the cop car, kick in the door, trying to kick windows, trying to get .

out of my handcuff. S through your mind. All i'm thinking .

is why I won't they let me see her? Why want want they let me go to her?

Did he done and new at some point? There was a probably a reason for that .

when my dad showed up and my dad looked at me and he just put his finger up and he melt the words.

stop, wait.

And so mean, I may have been in my toys, but my dads are still stop.

Scott's father .

had a talk with the officer, and in a matter of minutes, Scott was let go.

So I want to too much, dad and my dad, my dad was a very hard man. He was loving and he was a committed father, but his love was was tough. And my dad looked .

at me .

and he said, do you have your big boy pencil? I said yesterday and he looked at me and he shook his head and he said he didn't make IT. I mean, your mom didn't make IT and I looked at my dad and I just kind of glared at, and I looked at him and I said, dad.

oka and he said.

some there are some things you don't say out about.

Scott had no idea who killed his mother, and his lust for revenge wouldn't do much good. Scott had some things to learn about pain and loyalty and betrayal before the killer was revealed. Quite a bomb that went off in that same way, or a virus that infected everyone.

You can change the way that that's great.

Give you nightmares .

you call IT a nighttime or love.

if you wish, the kind that curdles and is something else altogether.

The street was a jumble of lights and cars and curious neighbors when, detective, one very months of the haris county sharif arrived, who was first person in to talk to earn with here.

First officer that I spoke with was the first responding officer.

Let know what i've taken place.

See you to Carry at all?

No, at at that point, Carrier was still in my patrol vehicle.

Carry. The victim's daughter, deputy hoper, had talked to her about what happened in the house and he brief detective vera monies .

SHE heard a male voice, uh, those telling her mother to shut up. And then he ran out of the house and try to get some help from anybody that would be outside.

inside. At the scene of the killing, an interesting that of evidence.

we discovered a gunman, mother's, he underdeveloped, illo IT was .

marian's own handgun, a semi automatic .

SHE didn't .

a chance to use IT vibe?

No, sure. Now, from what we knew here, no.

must have been a sleep when he was attacked. Couldn't get to the gun in time. Your mom was pretty handy with a gun.

Wasn't SHE SHE was IT Normally sad on a leather case on the headboard. And when the police founded, IT was on the bed, on the actual mattress, which means at some point IT had .

been touched yeah .

and knowing my mom, SHE will went for her.

And if he hadn't been ously, if SHE hadn't also been death in one year and thus caught by surprise, he would have taken any attacker down, figures gott, because IT was hard to get the best of marian Murphy.

He was strong, a strong woman, strong values. SHE stuck to him, and he made us stick to them as well.

Have the tucker grew up with marian's daughter, kerry. SHE had known marian her own life. You spend a lot .

of time in her house.

Yes.

tell me about that. Marian was funny. SHE was sarcastic. SHE was comfortable around curious friends .

when either came to the house. IT wasn't miss Murphy, IT wasn't. And that IT was, hey, mom.

SHE treated as well that he would also kind of like talk back to us. I remember we introduced one of our new friends to her for the first time, and we warned him that h. Marian was definite one year.

He's like, okay. And so he walks up and he very loudly like, hi mum, nice to meet you. SHE said, diamond boy, have death?

Not stupid. okay. Um what do I start? Kd was another .

childhood friend that Carries SHE like mary. And the minute you meter.

remember walking and through their garage and SHE just had such like joy, like I just remember, oh god, like SHE looks nice. SHE was always doing things for Carry and buying her things and taking her to and from wherever kerry needed to go.

SHE had what I would call sometimes the doctor. Jo, mr. Hide effect. SHE, could you know, we get known to you about, you know, you did something wrong, you didn't do the dishes, right?

The phone ring and SHE just hello and just be the sweater person on phone. And then SHE hanging up and be right back to get on you. But when IT came to her kids, uh, when he came to her family period, all he wanted was .

for us to thrive. So I .

considered her the boss. I think anybody would consider the boss. Excess may be done. Her husband.

they were so different. Mom and dad, very different careers too. Marian worked for the department of public safety. Don was a machine. st.

My mom grew up very country, uh, very strict. Her dad was caught, uh, x military. So he had a very strong regiment. My dad, on the other hand, was the proverbial from the wrong side of the tracks, best cars, loud car, street race and fighting.

They didn't make a lot of money, but the movie did. okay. Scott got a kick out of his mom, respected his father and dated on his little sister.

I changed her dippers as a baby. You, I .

painted her .

fingernails red, White, and boom. For fourth july, I was the first one of a teacher, had a brother hair.

And now he could see that his baby sister, still only sixteen years old, had been through a terrible ordeal, terrified, hiding in her room, running to the neighbors. Police needed to get what information they could from their fragile witness.

One of the things I wanted to do, of course, is transport to the homicide office and conduct up in an interview in a more appropriate setting.

Detectives strapped in for a long night.

I can scream with my mob's name was like, mom, mom, mom, please answer me, answer me.

As their Young witness told her terrible story.

Carry Murphy was a sixteen year old mess by the time the detective sattled down at the station round sunrise, the night she's been through tough for anybody. And this Young somebody had just lost .

her .

mother what .

they did, what they could to make her comfortable. They would need her figure out what happened .

to her mother.

Far SHE wouldn't .

be able .

to tell them a lot. SHE didn't see much, he said. But SHE heard a lot and she's helped if he could .

tired as he was. You now try to get some information about .

what happened at home.

IT was the sound of her mother's screaming, SHE said that woke up to an intruder in the house.

My mom screaming, stop, stop. Help me, help me, help me stop. And I got scared.

He said. He got up and got a knife that he had in her, in her room and waited a few minutes. You're in your room .

and your mom was her big room OK. I just like a man, go, shut up, shut up. And I got scared.

I didn't know I should run out. I didn't have a phone at me. I couldn't go nine one one right then, just didn't know what to do.

And I froze. And I heard like what steps? Like running and like hard foods that running.

And i'm sorry, I walked out on my room and I can screaming. My mom name was like, mom, my mom, please me, me. And he did anything SHE wait a few .

more minutes and then he runs out the house and she's running out the house. H SHE mentioned the uh, paper that he saw outside as he was running.

And I slip on this piece of paper in the yard. So I picked IT up, and then I .

ran to a neighbor's piece of paper, was marian's address and a list of hours when he would be at home. Weirdly, there was another note, two right on the dining table, deputy who resided first.

The note stated, good luck in court without your mom.

The killer at the b word Carry said he didn't see that note. He was in such a rush to get out, but he told detectives of something that seemed to explain its meaning .

and he was speeding.

SHE told them he was supposed to be in traffic cord in just a few hours. He'd been in a car accident with the man a few weeks .

before he hit me in the the back and then I did one eighty and then he had in the front he got that because when he opened the door he was like, i'm sorry, i'm sorry, but if you're fall.

gave you a ticket for for one side but kerry .

said that wasn't the end of IT. Something strange happened with that same man only a few hours before the murder. SHE was at a restaurant with her mother .

and some family friends, like staring at my table. I looked back twenty minutes later and he was .

still staring later. He said he realized that was the man from the accident .

and that this person I was there, he said, IT IT looked like to go that that you had .

an SHE was at home later that night when another odd thing happened and this give her the creeped .

and I was doing scrap booking like, yeah and I know is like I can seen in the same hand lights. The same hand lights had passed like three times in the past five minutes, and I kitchen.

SHE said. SHE told her mother about IT, but marian didn't do anything. He said he called her brother too.

said a blue truck that was driving around the block over and over and over again. So I left my house a little early to go to work, and I went by my parents house. So I just kind set out the right way. And I waited for, I want to say, fifteen to twenty minutes.

He didn't see anything wrong. So he had IT to work. Sure, as he could be, that things were okay, though they were anything but. And now this case seem to be pointing in a specific direction. And the question was Carried, the real target.

do you have any enemies?

No, no. I like you ve had any .

problems with anybody other than than this, this person in the accident?

no.

And you have a picture of him, or or you have that paperwork with your house.

Is blue folder on the table a .

stranger with a grudge? IT wouldn't be the first time someone killed out of misguided rage, but this investigation was just getting started. So detectives would also be looking at someone who was not a stranger .

is no secret that my dad ham arguing.

Kt remembers how SHE heard the off the news SHE was at work when a former teacher called to save mrs. Murphy had died.

so then hung up the phone. I called my mom and we go directly to Carry his house, and I knock on the door and I like saying her name my Carry. I wait, no answer. And then I was walking back to the car, and a reporter stopped me, and they were like, do you know career? Your friends of career?

A reporter cady's first clue that something was seriously wrong, that mrs. Murphy didn't just die. Kady also didn't realize that Carry was still talking to detective vermont s and other detectives advance since the we are SHE had told them about the man from the car accident, the sheer terror SHE felt that night and the awful thing SHE witnessed.

I just have hearing her scream over and over against .

detective vera montes analyzed the crime scene in the hours after the murder. He explained to us what he saw that night as he walked from room to room, they're in the dark. He began at the back door where kerry said the intruders had broken in.

The first thing I was looking for was to see there was any force entry into the house. There was no signs of damage, no signs of force century. That looks kind of like the way he looks.

Now, another thing I noticed was the window broken. Both pains on the window were broken. There were some glass inside the residence, and there was also glass outside. There was a brick here on the kitchen floor, which IT didn't make sense, because most of glass would have been concerned to the inside of the house, not outside.

IT looked like someone throw a brick through the windows twice. And then he noticed that note on the .

dining table was hand ridden in the said something to the effect that good luck in court without your mom bach.

strange, the killer taking time to leave a note. And once so incriminating .

the residence on the floor, IT appeared that somebody had had just swept everything off the kitchen counter. And I was just lane here in this area.

Here he got to the bedroom where marian was killed.

IT appeared that he had been stabbed multiple times, over fifty times, at least even though he was covered in blood. The blood was contained to the body and little bit on the bed.

nobody footprint or hand prints anywhere else in the house. So somebody had done something to contain the blood. The veteran detective just know the house was telling him something.

So the fact that there is no signs of a four century, there was more than less outside the residents in inside. So that let me to believe that this was a stage scene that someone was trying to make IT seem like either there was a home invent or a burbery gone wrong.

But who would do that? Maybe an outsider. Sure, somebody with a dead begrudge. But any .

time that um there's a female, a mother or a wife that killed at residents h we start looking at people that live with .

her like the husband carrey's friends at her dad was kind of scary.

He was like, reference the edges pretty strict. Like I remember the perception the way kerry talked about her dad was like.

actually I be afraid of him. Don wasn't necessarily friendly. He wouldn't go out of his way to start a conversation with me. We definitely minded.

everybody minded.

How did I never really saw them interact much just because at at that point when I was singing around and he was working nights, so he'd be sleeping or he would just be sitting in his chair trying to relax.

They didn't take long for investigators to learn that marian and dawn were sleeping separately. There was more than a little tension in that relationship he had been having some trouble with.

He had my dad, i'd been, he'd been struggling with, with alcohol diction .

for a long time.

IT has always been an an issue growing up. But at over the past, probably year and a half, IT had been put a pretty regular thing for him. No, put down a few, and then sometimes more than a few.

Well, how do you must feel all about that?

Oh, my mother was less than happy about that. SHE wasn't a drinker. So to her, if you have more than two drinks, you're drunk.

course. And once, you know, two became four and four became eight, eight became sixteen. That's when the this is this is not going to happen and he was very, very vocal about that deputy .

hoper talked to on the night of the killing when you first saw what do you look like? What how to come off what we are think I guess .

you could say he was more calm under the circumstances of the situation. This seems like he should have been more upset, but he wasn't.

Don Murphy would speak with detectives, submit to finger pretty and answered questions concerning his wear about around the time is a murder. But as far as detectives knew their best and only witness was a tearful sixteen year old girl whose story was about to change.

You you need to put that out there care.

And there is and heard me.

In the long, difficult hours after his mother's murder, Scott Murphy understood that detectives were just doing their jobs.

I mean, they, they fingerprinted me. They fingerprinted my dad. It's no secret that my dad and my maham had been arguing, so IT made sense.

Scott remembers well after they left the share of office how his tough as nails father lost my dad just by himself.

He picked up A A piece of sidewalks shop, and he just started to write on the ground by himself and in just big, big letters and said, i'm sorry.

what was done? Murphy, sorry for did he seem to you that there was in the realm of possibility that he had something to do with this?

never. My dad doted on my mother. He loved her from the day that he met her. And I don't care how mad SHE got at him or how mad SHE made him. He was never gonna hurt her.

And now that he was gone, Scott saw his father falling apart.

I mean, he started to tear up, and he looked me, my eyes. He said, I can fix a lot of things, but I can fix this.

Nobody could fix IT, but detectives hope kerry could make sense of IT. They were still talking to the morning after the murder, still wanting to know, how did the killer get in the house they came to .

through the front door or the back door, that door, okay, but if they break into, as they just come in, they broke in.

You notice they kick .

their by then.

the detectives knew the back door was intact.

How do you think they got in?

Ever get in the house.

do you there?

But the killer, they explained, didn't get in through that broken window either.

There is no way for somebody to reach your.

这 啥 but now IT .

doesn't。

Before you heard her mom screen for help, did did you hear any glasses breaks? My radio was .

turned out, but the neighbors .

heard the glasses break. And IT was right before they saw Carry.

One of the neighbors said that they hurt glass breakage, and within fifteen seconds they see kerry walk in out from the backyard.

Now that did not compute investigators questions. We're getting more pointed.

They heard the glass break. And they heard the second glass brain.

those two windows broke.

and within seconds they see you come out.

The back here are.

The neighbors were high on weed, SHE said. They must be mistaken. The girl was kind of a puzzle even right after the killing, as he was waiting in the back side .

of fred hopper's patrol car. Calm for someone whose murder I just been attacked .

any more detail?

Well SHE ask, am I gonna a have to go to court while he was the vacation? And I thought that was strange.

Strange that he was still concerned about traffic court for that car accident when her mother had just been murdered. But then deputy hoper already knew there was something fundamental wrong with Carrying story had known from the moment .

he found marian's body, the mom was land there covering .

the in the blood .

had started .

to dry in the house sorry, your mom.

And now in the end of your room, with the sun rising, detectives listened with growing skepticism as Carry tried to explain why IT took so long to call .

nine one one for a long time. I heard him rustling with, like, payroll and stuff strangle .

spin all the time he killed you. And just like the gag around and in the kitchen.

they pushed her on the question about the blood.

there's too much of her blood that's already drive.

And if really, well, i'm sorry.

Well, that's where we have in the problem me and is this is time for me that if you heard her screaming and you ran out and within minutes the police are there IT is is obvious that he had been there for some time, not just minutes.

I'm really not understanding. I'm sorry, I am really not understanding.

What do you not understand?

Like what you are trying to say? Are you trying to say I killed my mom?

I'm trying to say that you have some more information .

that you're not. No, sir, I do not. I do not. I told the cards or everything I know.

Care, your story does not fit.

Then maybe he was tired, maybe you would run out of answers, but suddenly kerry Murphy had something important to tell. Homicide detectives. IT wasn't some a stranger or some guy from a car rec who killed her mother. IT was someone .

SHE knew. I do know you.

You need to put that out there. Care.

i'm scared, is going to me. No.

he was .

in .

great is .

what's .

his name?

Who was saying he .

is my stock ger design was .

was a kid .

from the nephew d that he didn't care for him and and SHE believed that he had broken into the house and and killed a, killed her mom.

twenty old jane omid d used to go to Carry his high school, but he dropped out in the eleven grade, kerry said. You don't know the little over three years and that he had become obsessed with her.

He got mad when I told him, I want to go out with him. And he's been told this day away from my house.

and he just eves coming back. So there IT was a new story about jane and another guy who was massed. They were the killers, and they threatened .

to kill her too. And I kill you. And he back to me, up against selves.

And he had his hands, starting from here, going across like this. And the knife was in his hand over here, and I was standing like this. And the guy, he was like, do something else, to do something else. He ran the knife. They are my chest to my stomach and on my life. And he was like, you Better make the look like a robbery and put the now in my hand, and he closed my hand and he was going to say, and then he crowed the bricks he throw through the window.

Maybe that explained why the neighbor's, the glass shatter just moments before they spotted Carry leaving the house. If this guy, jane, was truly dangerous, there is fear and lies made sense. Still, detectives had to know, was he a killer or an accomplice didn't .

What happened inside the little house and humble texas on that dark summer night? Detectives were learning this much. Kerry had lied about an unknown and truder, and then he blamed to get named jane. So was this new story true? One thing they were learning Carry and her mom, we're not getting along.

You know yourself with you no.

I I forward .

this is back and or was.

I don't know my money.

Kerry would tell me stories about them writing all the time I had already known like kerry was grounded for something or like that mom yelled dater for something.

Maybe a polygraph would lead to the real story. Her father signed off on IT, so kerry took the, but in the end, IT wasn't helpful not to Carry. Anyway, the results suggested he was not being truth.

So they .

started .

again, or two .

versions .

again.

So cared will tell me.

what time did he do any more than one version of the same story? I was pretty .

consistent. No, no. SHE SHE changed that .

story as well among my name.

Her new story contains an added elements. SHE remembered SHE actually saw the attack and tried to help her mother.

I grew up my knife and I read in her room.

And this guy .

grade me .

what guy.

the guy that I did recognize. And then and my he was struggling and biting her get pushing her down.

Well, that's a big change from the earlier story.

exactly. He was that a no, no.

as they ve let her talk, her story shifted, grew details like bean stocks.

right? Look at me.

How do they open the door? They take the luck.

You didn't let the man.

You didn't give a key. No.

they that Carrie Murphy was guilty of something. If SHE didn't kill her mother seemed like he must .

the .

question .

that opened the door just a crack.

how you think your mom is .

reacting right now to you.

mad. Why would you to manage you?

Because I didn't help this. I just like, CD have.

Because you .

don't want to.

or you generally manage your on about something you what you .

about your money. The fact he tried to control my life and everything I did, he called me stupid or dumb, or told me I wasn't good enough.

And then one more story came out. He was going to of something of making a terrible mistake.

I like the man because he said they were going to bang on the wall and scare her in the line out, then tell me their full plan.

SHE did let zane and another guy in the house, but he was supposed to frightened her mother, not kill her. SHE had only .

asked him to go in there and and scare her.

I say, and he got Carried away.

He got .

Carried away. Tell.

yes, that's what I been holding back. As I killed my mom, I let him in. I don't know. He was going to do that though.

after something like nine hours of talking to Carry, the detectives called her father and brother and told them, come and get her. wow. Why did I go home at this stage .

with the jubilees? The day are dealt differently. I was only onna get a statement from her. We're treating there as a witness.

When Scott does dad arrived to the share of office, Scott sense that something was up. There was a reason detectives that kept Carry. As long as they did.

we picked her up and we got in the car, and we all just kind of step there. And I looked in the review mirror and I said, kerry, who killed my mom and SHE looked at me with tears, analyzing SHE said, I think .

IT was a aie.

IT made sense.

Carey left out the part where SHE left zane in the house. But even so, sae seemed like a viable suspect to god.

I had heard my sister and talk about him. I had heard a couple of her friends talk about tom. And like IT was all in passing, he was creepy.

He was strange. He was weird. And at one point I was told that he was stocking my sister.

Okay, who told you? And my sister?

Actually.

that night, U. S. Marshals, armed with an arrest warrant, went looking for zae. They found him. And when they did, they came across a whole new mystery zin himself.

Someone's .

raining prime. Yes.

a lot of the things he said didn't make sense.

IT wouldn't be long before investigators found themselves heading down a kind of rabbit hole. The bunning phone.

The bunning phone.

The car was silent as cotton Carry, and their dad drove away from the sheriff office. They took Carry to a friend's house. Soon after that, either pulled up and found Carry outside.

I got out and I around her, and I hugged her, and we just cried there in the middle of.

did you tell you with that.

he told me that he had been taken down to the station and that the police had asked her questions. And SHE said that he felt as if the police were trying to make IT thing like he did.

What was he like for you to here?

I was angered. I was upset. I thought that's so unfair. Why would the, why would they do that to Carry?

Did he say about saying at that point.

he did tell me that I was saying they .

were able to get a warned for his arrest just based on what Carry provided a .

violent defenders task force that by U. S. Marshals found twenty year old jane omid at home, put him in cuffs and brought into the share of office.

you know, who Carry .

relationship?

Conference, what did I do? I have not done.

which last time .

you .

seen since, like, like, I ran into the more way back.

SHE said. You came by our house last night.

I was at home all night. Last night. I didn't anywhere.

I was at home. I never been to Carry his house. Told you, was you, sir? I haven't been her house.

He denied everything, so he didn't know where he lived. So he certainly wasn't stocking her, although he did admit he had a short term memory problem.

So is IT possible with a show time member as you had going to Carrier house with some point time? And just all remember, no, that's not impossible because I .

don't know where Carrie loves the first place.

The detectives got to the point.

do you know, cares, mom? no. Do you know what happened there? You know, now.

SHE.

I can. What do you know .

about that?

He said he didn't know what what we were talking about, that he he was at home to playing a video game.

guitar hero. He said he was playing with his nieces and nephews.

Someone's .

framing .

prime yes, making all though yes.

and you don't know why.

No, after hours of denials to take this out of thought.

he was asked if he would submitted to a polygraph. He agreed to that.

Odd how some investigations can just turn on a time. This one certainly did.

He was told that that he had done poorly on the exam, so he was eventually taken back to the interview room.

Ah remain could they .

have seen this coming? But right then, zen confessed to the murder of marian Murphy.

He would basically just said that, yes, he did that. He was in there, in, in. He stabbed. He stabbed mimir phy.

This story began just like the one Carry told.

Again, and she's like, can you scared my mom? My yeah sure.

Do you say you why you want the money?

Get loser. So I get ready. Head ahead. My world, black, every all black. I had a hurt over my face. I can see me. I heard a that weapon me, but use, I was just scare her mom.

His friend drove him to Carries house before nine P. M. 一些。

I knock there.

OK and SHE come outside the door.

He said.

He went to marian's bedroom.

SHE, and you really like cream, jump down. I got ghin. My heart was a an accidently stabbed.

I remember .

sometimes I stabbed about .

where I know .

one in the stomach, but the rose is like more on the stomach. Take one of your one in the back.

So what they charge him with, they charge him with murder. Now they had to decide what to do with the girl, the teenager who was angry with her mother.

Twenty four hours later, they were calling back. They said, we need you to bring her in.

So very angry.

Teenagers, not so unusual for a sixteen year old to act out against a parent, but this teenager seem to have turned on her mother in the worst possible way. What happened exactly? Kerry told detectives so many tall tales.

IT was hard to keep the straight. First he said a stranger did IT then SHE said, saying at IT because he was obsessed with her and then he said he asked me to come to the house to scare her mother. But for reasons events ae couldn't explain, he went on the killing frenzy. So they were done with Carry, not yet. Who was this girl?

I've been Carry as long as i've been aware. What would you .

like this in your recollection? As a little kid.

SHE had a strong personality. SHE was possessed. Ve, even at a very Young age that he was my friend and he loved .

like a sister I am met Carry in six grade um I was new to the school and I met her inquire by the .

time they got to high school, kerrie was struggling to fit in .

our school demographic was majority black and his panic, and because he was so tall and rosy red cheeks, SHE stood out naturally.

So did you feel like comfortable in their skin?

Once kerry started really growing and getting taller and just changing in general, SHE definitely started to get little more self conscious about her appearance. SHE started ring little more makeup, dressing differently, just trying things out to see what's stuck.

trying to fit in probably as much as anything right. Was he accepted for .

the most part, yes.

at home and for a long time, Carry. And her mom seemed to be close.

SHE was a moment, girl, if someone went to the store, my sister was going with her.

But in the teenage years things changed. SHE started doing what he wanted. When he wanted .

once he became to the point where my sister was acting out and sneaking out of the house. That's when he became my heartbeat, and he pulled the classic you live in my house, you live by my rules.

Now, marian was dead, and investigators asked Carrie to come back down to the station for another round of questions. But Carry, he had other ideas.

and he says he wanted retract everything that SHE said, that everything that he said was was alive, that he had nothing .

to do with IT never asked jane to scare her mother, never let him into the house, all saying every single bit of IT.

yes. And that's when he lowered up.

when SHE asked for a lawyer, they officially charged her with the murder of her mother.

How do you get your head around the thing like that?

You don't. You watch the little girl grow up. And he had a purple room with pinking Green tense stripes. I know my mom, we're supposed to go close shopping the next day for, you know, school.

Scott wanted to believe his sister.

We realize she's telling multiple stories, but I was trying to find the truth in the multiple stories.

Ana emos was also searching for the truth. He was the chief prosecutor assigned to juvenile cases, and in this case, SHE had a confession from the apparent killer, that changing story from kerry and some serious outs.

I saw there was a fessing from an adult, a mail, and I was worried about IT was with a .

lot of the .

things he said didn't make .

sense like, for example, how he got into the house.

And so you came in the front, yes.

but kerry said the killers came in through the back door, and the location of the murder was saying, got that wrong too.

We went, we went to to see very long SHE says he was sleeping.

He said he went up a flight of stares, and this is a one story house. If you had just simply been inside the house at the time in the murder, you would know.

and you would know what you did to .

your victim four times.

SHE was stabbed over seventy times.

Quite a difference.

Yeah.

quite a difference. As SHE reviewed the seven hour interrogation, he could hear zane, ziggy and after. Confessing to the murder, he suggested he wasn't there at all.

This is what really happened, and this is coming from my heart and everything. Sunday morning I was up on, and all three in the park in .

the morning. OK you losing me? What time did you go there?

I didn't go to curious house. My brother, my dad, everybody and my family can tell you I was at home all day last sunday. I think going anywhere.

And this is the troops. I'm just scare right now. No, it's here.

I'm trying .

to do my best here.

You can say I didn't do IT and I .

did do you to go home.

but no one .

was letting him go home, especially went minutes later. He was back to saying he did hill Carry his mom?

Do you really remember times? And where you stay, you do not want to tell me.

I don't remember having times I stay up.

I had great concerns with IT being an actual confession.

The prosecutor had another important question, and I had to do with motive, then didn't really have one. But as investigators started poking around in their victim's life, well, what do you know? A secret emerged, something about an affair.

Has he ever told you if her husband knew? Bottle, see you.

What m one kid disguise, jane actually confessed to killing marian burpy, but he couldn't get his facts right. The other the daughter Carry, cached about, like a kid fishing for a good story. And neither one made any sense. What a puzzle that one .

as IT was, and know we have to just keep working at IT.

Detective sydney Miller joined the widening investigation. I actually .

joined in and searching for witnesses. And you talk to people so we can figure .

out what happened here .

was Carry and zane locked up. Investigators took a closer look at the victim's life at marian's phone contacts, for example. And what has surprised?

He was having to fail with co worker.

And a fair was as something you felt you needed to look into.

Of course.

they found the boyfriend at work.

You have been here.

I worked here.

so sometimes on saturday.

SHE dropped by from bring us.

Gather and he could have witted they .

also spend time together on the phone to sex nature mean more like.

wouldn't you know majority for .

xy and .

and now, quite unexpectedly, ly, there was a potential love triangle in the middle of their murder investigation.

Had SHE ever told you if her husband knew bother seeing you?

As far as the boyfriend knew, husb done didn't have a clue about marian secret life .

was in a of away the house, he was said, because he had .

one thing they .

checked out the boyfriend's alii IT was the husbands'. Two detectives cross both men after a list. Apparently this marital drama had nothing to do with marian's murder.

I couldn't be mad. My dad was not giving her the attention and the affection that he deserves sometimes. And so I made sense to look elsewhere.

But then the new investigators were looking for more witnesses. One was a girl they heard about from Carries father talk to Rebecca. He said, kerry is a very good friend.

When kerry started to become friends with rebeca, I remember I got warning from someone and they were like, oh. They were like, okay, I will be careful.

why? careful? Well, for starters, rebeca keller was four years older than Carry. They got to know each other, inquire. Kerrie was a fifteen year old freshman. Robeco was a nineteen year old senior, and no other way to put IT. They fell in love, caught fire, really.

Robeco was her first love.

the intensity of that first love at that ages. Well, IT is mean.

you hit the hair on the head there.

Carry in her back. A were so immeshed and so desperate, if you will, for like love. And when they found that with each other they clung to IT. They wanted .

to protect IT.

But marian did not approve.

I don't think marian cared that like they were like lesbians or but not like. I think the age gap was the problem.

He did not trust someone who was eighteen, nineteen years old and actively dating a fifteen, sixteen year old. They argued a lot over rebeca.

and kerry was changing.

SHE was a bubble person. And then I don't know where I got dark, that I make up got darker. Her personality got dark.

Marian tried to stop IT ban rebeca from the house, took away, Carries phone, didn't work. They had been caught .

in the shower together when rebeca was not even supposed to be in the house, and that was a problem.

Then there was the day when rebeca came over and refused to leave, and marian called the police, and the officer who responded was none other than deputy constable fred hoper.

The mother explained that he didn't want the girlfriend there and not took to jae.

What was the charge? Just trust me.

Just just passing. yes.

So detectives knew about rebeca from the start, but they didn't chase her down because they had that confession from jane.

They know about the .

weekend of the investigation. Rebeca got a visit from law enforcement. They found her at home talk or in their car .

and never back. You are friends with, you know, Carry market.

Yes.

he was a fourth common. I've been francie. Yes, he talked about how they were in a dating relationship.

you can skipped over into a relationship.

and how he had gotten trouble and that he was not supposed to be around her anymore.

SHE admitted that, yes, he had dated Carry, but all that talk about desperate love, just another teen flame in the rear view mirror.

We stay for you see .

how to .

happen.

SHE said. SHE barely .

even spoke to Carry anymore and hadn't since a months before the murder.

So and talk to since .

though Rebecca .

did remember seeing the awful news about the murder .

I was in shot. Man, no, I you should talk to that lady every, every concert we had .

a but with her, china, stop you from going. He just.

he was trying to protect me. Keep me at all and to keep care that .

so you don't have any idea what has happened .

and you tell them .

in the truth in.

And what you tell? Good ID .

good kid.

Too bad .

marian had .

taken Carries phone away before the murder. IT might have backed up rebeca story or knocked IT down. Too late for that now and then. Well, well, guess what turned up?

Curry had a second phone.

burner phone.

a burner phone.

Now, why would kerry need a burner phone?

If you had to pick one key to unlock the whole miserable business, well then maybe I was the phone, the bunny phone. Remember when her mother was murdered? Kerry ran to a neighbor's house to call my one one.

They saw her with the phone in her hand, and they asked her, why do you know why t you not using your phone? You have a phone. And SHE told one of them that he was a phone that that .

her mom didn't know about on.

I burn her phone.

The kids .

called that the bunny phone because bunny was everyone's nickname for the person who provided IT Rebecca keller. Detectives started tracking IT down a few weeks into the investigation.

And the other, like, you know, where is IT? I have IT. Can we have IT? absolutely. You can have IT. And yeah, I just handed .

IT over and the records for that bunny phone or a revelation. For one thing, the Carry Rebecca love affair wasn't over IT was as intense as ever. The bunny phone revealed they talked constantly. So now Rebecca bunny and some explaining to do custody .

and be charged .

with anything OK just want to get a statement from you.

And this time they .

brought her in.

And just like her girlfriend had done over and over once he was caught in a lie, rebeca started changing her story.

In the second interview, we confronted her about having this communication, and SHE openly admitted, yeah, a lot about IT.

SHE admitted that he and Carries still talked a lot, and there was one call of particular interest to the investigators, a nearly three minute call around one. I am the night of the murder.

She's like, something bad has happened, and I really need you right now. Like, okay, what happened? Tell me what happened.

She's like, my mom has been killed. I like by who? She's like, I don't know.

I really scared. Okay, i'm py OK. Well, you need to call the cops. She's like, OK OK OK.

But that was IT all SHE knew. Rebeca said he had no idea what happened at Carries out that night because SHE was working at jose crab shack. So naturally we go to the .

crab shack. We talk to the manager. He tells us that no rebeca then worked there.

You've been fired two months earlier. Did he not think they would check the lie landed rebeca back at the share of the office for rounds three.

Though we go over this story has been some majority of the day that you told us with the .

alley up and smoke, rebeca told yet another new story. IT all started, SHE said, because kerry hated, really hated her mother.

SHE started saying, I hate my mom. I wish my mom is dead and I keep down or why? Why is your mom?

Gary complained about her mother for weeks, said rebeca.

until SHE started, tell me, yeah, i'm not plan. I've been planning this plan for for three months, and I was like, what? Playing so I can not to involve, but not to involve.

Her plan was, 就 我 一直 很忙, 不到 事情 going there with sunlight。 And he told me he was like, yeah, I want to have my my twenty eight times. No, I don't want to hear this. I pay me up and I hunger.

And then came the evening of the murder. Kerry texted rebeca on the bunny phone. IT was happening.

SHE started saying, yes, I have my brother. That this guy, this random car, going by again.

rebeca said SHE big Carried to .

keep her out of IT like, i'm not talking to you about this anymore. I done with IT .

around one. I am rebec is that Carry called one more time?

And she's like, I just did IT I was, I did what you like. I just killed my mom this.

who was a turning point in .

the case SHE to tell me like how he did IT she's like, I said .

my mom in times I .

sliter throw you to rebel to tell them. No, no, no, I to cover that I cover.

she's point a finger and point along.

Carry kind of a big deal writing out her girlfriend Carry like that. So the detectives asked, just to be sure, what Rebecca sit for a polygraph and he said, yes.

And .

SHE passed.

I think SHE passed with flying colors. He showed no deception.

the truth finally, maybe. But then a Young man and Martin warez, a kid with a car and a nagging memory, offered a fascinating story of his own about a certain event that very night in humble texas.

he said when he got to the car, he had been running. And he is just telling him that, go, go, go, go, go .

run, bunny, run.

There he was, waiting in his car in the dark, waiting and waiting on the night of the murder. Martin Warren later told detectives he thought was doing his friend rebeca a simple favor, dropping your off near Carry's plays and rebeca home.

Hey, i'll just be here about twenty minutes and and i'll be right back. He said an hour had passed.

He had heard from her. And when he finally did return.

SHE looked this host when he was running. I can really tell SHE had anything on her and he said when he .

got to the car, he looked like he was out of breath and she's just telling him, go, go, go, go, go.

Of all of the Young friend's detective tracked down after the murder, Martin warez was maybe the most informative. Yes, he took Rebecca to Carries neighborhood that night, but there was more. A few weeks after the murder, he found rebeca here in this park, and he confronted her about that night. And IT was right here. He told detectives that rebeca broke down and confest to the murder.

He came up. The true that he had did that he had two blaze that he went to turn a long SHE had took one knife.

Instead.

rebeca was there, and he was the killer.

The right to remain sound.

Now he was under arrest and backed into a corner. Yes, he said he was there that night. SHE loved Carry so much.

SHE allowed herself to be drawn into kerries plan to kill marian and cover up the crime. But love only takes so far, Rebecca insisted. IT was Carry. Who did the stabbing?

I heard her mom saying, stop, stop. And she's screaming. She's like, okay, you can stop staring me now and then bucking.

And in five .

minutes later, kerry comes out the bloody eyes and bloody gloves, and i've got a trash bag ity. I've told her to strip down. And he strict and SHE also closed in there.

That bit made sense to the detectives. They have been wondering how the killer contained the blood. So effectively rebeca also explained the note that blame effort to point the finger at the guy in a car accident.

I was supposed to right. The note was my different hand. And here is.

anyway, said rebeca, when they cleaned .

themselves up, he ask to get school and drop in the charge. Can the counters that would .

explain the dried blood on marian's body? Rebeca left, but Carries, stayed behind and continue to clean up for hours before he called nine one one. And jane.

is he .

what .

name?

E, well, that was Carried back up, lie, improvising right on the spot when he realized the story about the accident, wasn't landing the .

way you'd hoped .

IT was the care ever tell you he was .

going to try to blame something?

Yep, he said all of IT was Carries doing and SHE rebeca was simply the supportive girlfriend, but that wasn't going to keep her out .

of jail in the state, texas. You know, if you aid, assist someone in a crime like that, and you would be charged with the same murder.

So a rebeca was charged with murder, locked up as a herr's county jail, janes family said. All along, he was no killer. They gave the prosecutor or video of jane plane guitar hero with his family the nights mary an was murdered. So what did you do about saying in the end?

Well, after we looked into IT and got evidence we were comfortable with moving forward with .

dismissing his case.

we asked, saying why he confessed that night, he told us he was terrified. He didn't know what else to do. He also said he didn't stop kerry. He wasn't obsessed with her. He is name me like her, not in that way.

This was a brutal cold killing.

Prosecutor anna .

emin's had seen enough.

SHE knew .

this case belonged in adult court.

And if someone's going to go to that length to harm their mother and be part of that, that's a danger .

to the community of t.

yes. And he was certified to go to the adult system.

The judge in the case agreed to set bail for Carry a Scott, cobble together the money and picture up. He also made room for her in his home. He was, after all, his little sister and in a way, the only family he had left .

by the time he was certified adult. Um my dad had experienced some extreme mental decline and at this point I was I was on my own. My mom died in july of twenty twelve and by december of twenty twelve, my dad was talking to trees.

He was, as you know, having conversations with shadow s and his his short term memory was just declining. And I was twenty one. I didn't. I did know what to do.

Of course, he asked curry what happened, and he repeated the old story about jane. And Scott knew that wasn't true. IT had to be Rebecca.

They arrested rebeca for a reason.

So was Rebecca, not your sister, but Rebecca to grow right?

IT had to be her. They couldn't be my sister. She's my sister.

SHE.

SHE wouldn't kill her home .

and if he had any nagging doubts about that, Scott packed them away. All he could do now is take care of his little sister and keep her safe and prepare for the trial.

If I went Christmas open, SHE went with me um if I had little money to burn IT was probably .

going to her all the while Carries friends watched her behavior with something like discussed SHE seemed to be enjoying herself maybe too .

much IT seemed as if SHE was fine and like nothing and like never happened with that. SHE didn't lose her mom or that he was in just in jail.

He was moving on with her life. Nobody seemed worried. Nobody was crying, in that sense, at least not that I saw. And this is just shen gans, not a shene, a ign.

Oh, but something else was going on to secret, but not secret. Scott paid gery bill, but no one paid reBecky so well. Kerrie was parting on the outside.

Rebeca was confined to a harsh gray world behind bars, separated for good. why? No, not at all.

This is a call from an in made at parris county jail. About the case, about what really happened at the night, everything you wanted talk .

about so much to talk about, so much to plan.

The question at the heart of IT was, of course, why? Why would Carry turn on her mother in such a horrific .

way to be .

with a girlfriend? Yes, but had to be more than that. And sure enough.

did you believe that we Carry color phone taken away from and her mom was going to find something on that home and try to file on on you?

There IT was the twisted, rationally, that triggered the murder. I mean.

there would have been proof of no sending nudes to a minor. At that point he would would had proof of status. y.

Ray marian could have had rebeca charged with a serious crime, sex with a minor. So according to rebeca, kerry did IT committed metros de for her.

Together they created this dramatic world, this the present .

you get .

as a prosecutor. As you see their mug shot .

there is Carry, steal, IDE, almost smoky. But Rebecca, well, older, look lost, read scared, even though he was twenty years old.

he looks about fifteen. And IT takes some time to figure out the dynamic between the two of them.

Did you say you saw her as a follower? Saw rebec as a follower?

I think that's right. I think in many ways, kerry called the shots in their dynamic.

but easy case, maybe not. There were issues like one like .

the false confession.

That's a big one. It's in pretensions. And juries have .

job believing exactly .

a good defensive journey would run with that. And legally I didn't matter. But wouldn't jurors want to know which girl wheel of the knife weren't they actually pointing fingers at each other along the way?

A lot they would pledge their allegiance to each other and then talk to the police and say, was not to do. But I know .

who did so, who finally told the .

real story.

why they did on the phone. They couldn't help themselves.

There was a no contact order issued, and the first thing they did is break that no contact order. And they spoke on the phone for almost fourteen months. They were playing out of lifetime .

movie baby that day, I ve you.

I love you too.

There was Carry talked away in her warm, cozy life on the outside. And Rebecca .

version now making .

the best of her hard, grey reality behind bars.

I 突然 of you good like you one。 My people, you know, my people.

They talked about their longing for the .

past as they planned for the future, already teaching that .

kerry had lots of stories about life on the outside.

What can I be in the .

conversation that sounded needy, Carry, annoyed.

do you think? You, what do we talk about? Area so my own and i'm so i'm big and long enforcement .

was listening. So there was no urgency yeah, sure to stop them from talking if they want to incriminate themselves.

Sometimes they seemed disconnected from what they had done.

You no idea what have one. And having nobody but your brother to the, it's not too. All that blaming is of good things happen for a reason. Maybe can change where they die. That's great.

They created this bubble around the two of them. IT was void of reality. IT was a void of empathy, and ultimately is void of morality.

Between April twenty thirteen and April twenty fourteen, they talk more than eight hundred times at all. That time, law enforcement was listening for anything that could erase that pesky thing called reasonable doubt.

For months.

they seem to play the game, avoided incriminating themselves.

I do not know how many we are, can be going have, how are you? thank. 离开 这世界 的 下跪, 今天 在哪?

And then that happened. They were talking again about going back to the scene of the crime.

Go back and Carrier are talking about when they get out and they're going back to the house. And there's this question of IT will be IT will be hard for rebeca to go back there and to cope with IT and Carrie tells him some former fashion get over that we had to deal with IT and rebeca says.

you can see what I found actually again.

What what in your time, was in my room of time。 对, 喂喂, 你 the door way。

This sounded like the real story at last. Rebecca held the knife, kerry stood by in silent approval.

was a significant geo call to put the knife in one of their hands.

Greg holden played the tapes for Scott, and Scott abandoned all hope that his sister might not be the monster he feared.

I can see everything for what I was. And at this point i'm ready to accept that this was my sister .

Scott urge, Carry to take a plea.

And I mean, SHE fought me on IT SHE fought me. So I just, I gave her the facts. And in the end he took the deal.

Rebec c applied to when when he did, he still said IT was Carry, who wheeled in the knife. Now that that mattered, SHE got sixty years. He also told deadline SHE was manipulated by drugs and by Carry Carriers serving thirty years. How often do you talk her enough? Often do you see you?

I only see my sister when I feel that necessary, when there's been a an important moment in the family.

Their father remains in a residential care facility.

His brains broken. He thinks my mom's to alive.

What about you? How was your life?

I won't e you for a very long time. I didn't think I was gna bounce back. I got pretty low.

But now, now I am looking ough to have a wonderful life. I married ed to a beautiful woman. I have two amazing kids.

My family is my world. I don't take IT for granted. I know how quickly you can be taken away.

sure. If no one minds, there is one thing that I went bring up. yeah.

Since my mom was killed, there's been a lot of focus on what happened that night. And it's mean, it's terrible. It's tragic.

Sure, but that's not the whole story. Twenty one years before that, there was nothing but a lifetime of good memories. You know, pancake breakfast on sunday, build playhouse with dad.

There was a happy life in that house. SHE was a mom, SHE was a wife, SHE was a daughter, and he was loved her entire life. That's what defines my mom, not the night that he was killed.
