Key Insights

Why did God miraculously rescue Peter from prison but not James from being beheaded?

The Bible presents a mystery where God's ways are not always clear to us. Both James and Peter trusted in the Lord, but the way to their ultimate destination varied. Sometimes, the way involves immediate suffering or death, while other times it includes miraculous deliverance. We are called to trust in God's plan, even when we don't understand it.

What is the significance of excommunication in the context of St. Paul's teachings to the Corinthians?

Excommunication in St. Paul's teachings is a public declaration that someone has stepped outside the community due to their actions. It is not about putting someone out but recognizing the reality of their separation. The goal is for the individual to realize their position and return to the community through repentance.

How does St. Paul address sexual immorality within the church in his first letter to the Corinthians?

St. Paul is heartbroken and horrified by the public immorality of a believer living with his father's wife. He criticizes the community's arrogance and calls for the removal of the individual to prevent defilement. Paul emphasizes the need for mourning and correction rather than tolerance of such behavior.

What does St. Paul say about lawsuits among believers in his first letter to the Corinthians?

St. Paul views lawsuits among believers as a disgrace, indicating a broken relationship within the community. He questions why believers would turn against each other in court, suggesting that they should handle disputes internally and with wisdom, rather than resorting to external judgments.

What list of sins does St. Paul provide that can separate a person from God's kingdom?

St. Paul lists immoral behavior, idolatry, adultery, homosexual actions, theft, greed, drunkenness, reveling, and robbery as sins that can separate a person from God's kingdom. He emphasizes that despite these past behaviors, believers have been washed, sanctified, and justified through Jesus Christ.

How does St. Paul encourage believers to view their bodies according to his teachings?

St. Paul teaches that believers' bodies are not their own but are purchased at a price, referring to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. He calls believers to glorify God with their bodies, recognizing their bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit and instruments for God's glory.

It's a three, three, three, not only that, IT is the last day on the last second, the last page of the violin. The reading plan we're reading today actually possible chapter was sent paul s. First letter to the Green tines chapter five and six and program chapter twenty eight verses one through three is always the video translation on reading from is the revised standard version and second, catholic vision. I'm using great adventure bubble from my essences.

You probably, hopefully you feel accomplished, actually legit, like hopefully you feel accomplish, because this is incredible this day, three, thirty three. That means that for three hundred and thirty three days, whether they were consecutive days or or not, doesn't matter.

The fact is, you made IT to this point, and that is remarkable. You can also subscribe to this pod gas if you d like, you don't have to, but you're invited to day three thirty three. That's how we do IT IT.

Is day three thirty three reading actually possible? Chapter twelve, simple as first letter to the point in check, or five and six, and probably chapter twenty eight verses one, three, three. The act of the apostles les chapter d.

Twelve, James killed and Peter, imprisoned by head about that time, harried the king, laid violent hands upon some who belonging to the church. He killed James, the brother of john with the sod. And when he saw that IT pleased the jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter.

Also, this was during the days of eleven bread, and when he had seized him, he put him in prison and delivered him to force squads of soldiers to guard him, intending, after the password, to bring him out to the people. So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest player for him was being made IT to god by the church. An Angel rescues Peter from prison.

That very night, when herd was about to bring him out, Peter was slept between two soldiers bound with two chains and centuries before the door were guarding the prison. And behold, an Angel of the lord appeared and a light shown in the cell. And he struck Peter on the side and motives, saying, get up quickly.

And the chains fell off his hands, and the Angel said to him, dress yourself and put on your sandals and he did so. And he said to him, rap your clock around you and follow me. And he went out and followed him.

He did not know that what was done by the Angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city IT open to them of its own accord. And they went out and passed on through one street.

And immediately the Angel left him, and Peter came to himself and said, now I am sure that the lord has sent his Angel and rescued me from the hand of and from all that the jewish people were expecting. When he realized this, he went to the house of mary, the mother of john, whose other name was mark, where many were gathered together, and we're praying. And when he knocked at the door of the gateway I made named erode, came to answer, recognizing petter's voice in her joy, SHE did not open the gate, but ran in and told that Peter was standing at the gate.

They said, where you were mad, but he insisted that he was. So they said, IT is his Angel. The Peter continued knocking and when they opened they saw him.

And we're amazed the motioning them with his hand to be silent. He described to them how the lord had brought him out of the prison, and he said, tell this to James and to the brethren. Then he departed and went to another place.

Now when they came, there was no small stir among the soldiers over what had become of Peter. And when herd had sought for him and could not find him, he examined the centuries and ordered that they should be put to death. Then he went down from judea to see asia and remain there.

The death of herd. Now, Harry was angry with the people of tired and sidon, and they came to him in a body, and, having persuaded blasts the king's chAmberlain, they asked for peace because their country depended on the king's country for food. On an appointed day, harrd put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne and made a novation to them.

And the people shouted the voice of a god and not of man. Immediately, an Angel of the lord struck him because he did not give god the glory, and he was eaten by worms and died. But the word of god grew and multiplied, and barnabas and soul return from jerusalem when they had fulfill their mission, bringing with them john, whose other name was mark. Saul's first letter to the cinthie chap five, sexual immorality defiles the church IT is actually reported that there is immorality among you and of a kind that is not found even among peggs for a man is living with his father's wife and you are arrogant.

Thought you not rather to mourn, let him, who has done this, be removed from among you for though absent in body, I am present in spirit, and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment in the name of the lord is on the man who has done such a thing when you are assembled, and my spirit is present with the power of our lord jees, you are to deliver this man to stay in for the destruction of the flesh that his spirit may be saved in the day of the lord jesus. Your boost in is not good. Do you not know that a little eleven, eleven s all the doe cleans out the old eleven, that you may be new doe, as you really are unelected for Christ's, our pascal lam has been sacrificed.

Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old eleven, the eleven of mAlice and evil, but with the unelected bread of sincerity and truth, immorality and judgment. I wrote to you in my letter, not to associate with immoral men, not at all meaning the immoral of this world, or the greedy and robbers, or adulators. Since then, you would need to go out of the world, but rather, I wrote to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of immorality or greed, or is an idolator reveler, drunker or rober.

Not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders is IT not those inside the church whom you are to judge god that judges those outside, drive out the wicked person from among you. Chapter six, lawsuits among believers.

When one of you has agreed vance against the brother, does he dare go to lobby for the unrighteous instead of the saints? Do you not know that the sense will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you component to try trivial cases? Do you not know that we are to judge Angels? More matters pertaining to this life? If then you have such cases, why do you lay them before those were least esteemed by the church? I say this to your shame.

Can I be that there is no man among you wise enough to decide between members of the brotherhood, but brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbeliefs to have lawsuits at all with one another is defeat for you, why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded, but you yourselves wrong and defended, and that even your own breath room, do you not know that the unrighted will not inherit the kingdom of god, do not be deceived, neither the immoral, nor idolators, nor adulterous, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revellers, nor robbers, will inherit the kingdom of god. And such were some of you, but you were washed, you were scientific.

You were justified in the name of the lord, that jesus Christ, and in the spirit of our god, glorifying god in the body. All things are lawful ful for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful ful for me.

But I will not be enslaved by anything. Food is meant for the stomach, and the stomach for food. And god will destroy both one and the other.

The body is not meant for immorality, but for the lord and the lord for the body. And god raised the lord, and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? So I therefore take the members of Christ and make the members of a prostitute.

Never do you not know that he who joined himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her, for as IT is written, the two shall become one, but he who is united to the lord becomes one spirit with him. Shun immorality. Every other thing in which a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man, since against his own body, do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy spirit within you, which you have from god?

You are not your owner. You were bought with a Price. So glow, if I got in your body.

The book up program after twenty eight versus one through three the wicked and the righteous contrasting the wick could flee when no one pursues but the righteous are bold as a lion when a land transgresses IT has many rulers but with men of understanding and knowledge, its its stability will long continue. A poor man who impresses the poor is a beating rain that leaves no food. Father, and having give you praise, we thank you so much.

Thank you, lord, for calling us. Thank you not looking for calling us to yourself help. Thank you for calling us to repentance. Thank you.

We're calling us away from our sins and back to you, back to your heart, back to your love, back to your will. Our god, we so easily, so easily we walk, we go so easily we can run from you. And not only that, we can even justify our running from you.

Help us to never ever run from you, help us to never give into our basic desires, but never given to our inclination of temptation to sin. Tell us in every way to say yes to you, to say yes to you, you're well to say yes to the the, your call to us to repent, to turn away from what kills us in turn towards you. Who gives us life in jesus name? We pray a man.

And the name of the father of the sun enough, the holy spirit, a man. So while the actually possible, we have James, the brother of john, who was killed by, heard in this one chapter in chapter to all, we have this story about how, on one hand, in a postle, James is killed by herd, and another apostle, Peter, is rescued by the lord from Harry. IT brings up the question of wa, god miraculously delivered Peter from prison, why didn't he miraculous ously deliver James from being beheaded to? And this can become one of the, again, an incredible wait, incredible question, an incredible unanswered question, a mystery capital and mystery.

When we look at the world, say, okay, lord this, I just, you spare my life here, but how this person I love, person I know about, maybe someone I never been met, I heard about, they weren't spared. Why, lord, and we can be so conflicted by this question that ultimately, the answer we don't know, other than we can, or we are called to trust the lord James in the last moment of his life, trusted in the lord Peter, as he was lying down, believing these to be the last moment of his life, trusted in the lord. We don't know the way to the destination.

We all, we only know the destination. The destination has got himself. The destination, the end of the journey is is him.

The point of the journey is him again. The destination is life with him forever. And we don't know the way sometimes the way is there through the at the end of the sd.

Here's James who gets killed, get to a destination. Here's Peter who has, note the lord says, you've got years to go. You've got miles to go before you sleep.

So here is delivered. We know the destination. We don't know the way to the destination.

And sometimes, just like we saw that today in chapter twelve of the accusal, sometimes the way to the destination immediately is that death, that suffering, that pain. And sometimes it's a miro being part of a miracle like same Peter was. The only thing we get to do is we get to say yes to that.

We get to say, OK lord, whatever IT is, we trust in you. So that was chapter twelve, the axy puzzles. We also had chapters five and six of first Quentin's, which hopefully chAllenging for us. So I mentioned yesterday how to live like a kantian was basically to say that someone was living A, A, A broken life. I'll say IT like that, living a broken life.

When I came to morality, as we noted, that things running are bad and they think is P, G, thirteen, to be able to say that here, here's A A believer whose living with his father's wife ah and so basically step mother essentially and the problem that saying paul has here is he saying this isn't even this kind of behavior does not even happen among pagans, much less here as Christians now here's an interesting thing. Um you could say, well, where the jesus say don't do that and yet we know that we are not to do that. Not only does the old text ment elude to this, but we also recognize that sexual morality doesn't necessarily, you know, the teachings of the lord and teachings of the bible and teachings of the church don't always specify every possible deviation or every possible for lack of Better term perversion or misuse of the sexual function.

Doesn't do that um because we're really creative as human beings and we can distorter good things all of the time. But what think policy is i'm basically heart broken and also somewhat horrified by the fact that here is this person among you who claims to be a believer who is publicly living in a way that goes against what we believe and you as are fine with IT in the effet, evan says you're arrogant. You boasts of this.

Are you not rather to mourn? This is one of those things that happens a lot, right? So um degree public people who are clearly violating the laws of god, clearly violating the laws of the church, they're claiming to be Christians there are claiming to be catholics and he is saying, paul, he would have no time for that, just like he has no time for that right here what his remedy is he says deliver him to say and here's i'm telling you this, when you're assembled, you are to deliver this man to say, and for the destruction of his flesh now is not kicking about.

This is the source of what we call x communication. X communication is that you're no longer and communicate with us and therefore unit and realized that your actions have placed you outside the relationship of the church is really interesting. X communication doesn't do something other than to simply recognizes something.

What I mean by that is here he had, remember the old, the old fin stones opening, where at one point, friend one takes dino o the dinner dog thing they have, and like six outside, put them down, shut the door. Sometimes we can think, if that image strikes you as well, have that memory. Sometimes we imagine that communication is like that.

It's not IT doesn't put someone outside the house. What it's doing is it's declaring, it's pointing out the reality that is already present. Here is someone i'm standing outside the community by my very choices, by my actions.

Here is this man in chapter five. He has already stepped outside of the community by leaving this particular way. The church, therefore, is to say we're decline with pointing out to you this is where you're standing.

Therefore, you are not in convenient with us. Therefore, you can't receive minion. That's part that's part of the whole thing that you can't receive minon because you're not in communion with us because you're standing outside. The family are standing outside the community. And by pointing this out, the idea here is, as sample livan says, he delivered him to say, and for the destruction of his flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the lord idea being that he realizes his outside and he comes back in, he realizes, I need to repent of my ways. Because right now, people just tolerating this doesn't call him to conversion in any way, shape or form.

And unfortunately, that this thing that happened in first entities is still happening, is happened for the last two thousand years and the churches has had to exercise this power of x communication has had to exercise power being able to say, okay, you're claiming to be one of us. You're not living like us um so you have to point this out and you're not repenting. I mean, obviously everyone of us sends everything one of us sends, that's a different thing.

You know this, if you're catholic, that if we have serious in graves and models in, we have to go to confession before we received union. I mean that we have repent of our sons before we receive communion. That's not the same thing is that communication.

But we do have to be reconcile first before we receive union or all. That's another thing. So there's that, that reality, of course, that every one of us since. But this simple talking about this is a public thing.

This isn't just some kind of um no one really knew about this, whatever he was in any kind of sense that be more private I guess more unknown this one is completely known because of that because it's so public um for the sake of the community and for the sake of this mansoul, he has to be x communicated in order for him to realize this something right OK hofus ly got to cut all that yeah you know, here we go. But going on to say sink pool points out that I vote you to not associate with immoral people, mal men, he says, but he doesn't mean the immoral of the world. Because it's like because then you would be up to with anybody.

But i'm i'm talking about those brothers and sisters here in the community who are acting in living in this particular way, treat them as you would treat an outsider. And this is really, really important. Again, I don't know how to do this exactly in my daily life, but I think what is part of what that means is allowing the holy spirit to convict us of our sins and allowing for internal correction, right?

This for internal correction of when a brother comes to me, our sister comes to me and says, listen, I see what you're doing. I see where you're standing and calls me to repentance. I have to listen to them, and maybe I have to do that to others as well, because we can't live this kind of divided life.

In chapter six, sample talks about lawsuits that here are Christians treating each other like they are strangers, treating each other like their enemies and bringing each other to task the court and says, that's a disGrace. That is Grace, that Christians would turn against Christians and actually sue each other, which is remarkable. Later on, in that same chapter, he says the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of god.

And he makes me very, very clear that here, here's a list of sin, here's a list of ways in which people can sin that will separate them from god. And some of them are distant from us. Some of them are very close to us. So adulators in adulterous, again, living outside of marriage.

Um uh no homosexuals or homosexual actions uh nor thigh, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revealers no robbers will not heard the kingdom of god now in that list we can say, why don't do all those in sap ldn say you have to do all of them? It's even one of them, right? That sense of, like, I don't deal, i'm not a little dollar or okay, I have I stolen, but i'm not a thief.

Well, OK do I get drunk at regularly? You know, that sense of, we can sometimes excuse ourselves. I make ourselves the exception.

But there is this list of sins that can separate a person from at the lord and keep them from eternal life with him. This, this is a word of god list. So we need to pay attention to every single word of god.

Now, here's the great news. Saying, paul says to them, and such were some of you, all this whole list, immoral, adulators, adulterous, homosexuals, thaves, greedy, drunkards, revelers, robbers. This is what some of you were, but he goes on, this is so good, you, as is the great news, but you were washed, you were sanctified.

You were justified in the name of the logic Christ, and in the spirit of our god, this is, every one of us is broken. Every one of us is broken. No one is an exception, and every one of us is loved.

None of us is an exception. Therefore, all of us have to let go of whatever sin IT is now always spelt this way. Doesn't matter. Have to let go of the sin and turn to the lord sus.

Because he desire s you, and he desires me to let go of our sins, to turn to him in repentance, a spirit of sorrow and a spirit of trust in him, and let him read us as he says that the very end of this chapter is incredible. You are not your own. So he says, well, this is my, this, this I always built, like this always done.

This has always been a strugling for me. Okay, fine, that god loves you. God loves you, but you don't just get, go do what you want.

You are not your own. You were bought with a Price, therefore glorify god in your body. You guys.

This is part of our journey, part of our journey to allow the word of god to convict us, to recognize that we see ourselves. Now, in this list, you might see other people. That is not the point.

That is not. That's not the point in this list, is to see ourselves and to say, okay, and this is how broken I am, and this is how loved I am. So let the love part win, not the broken part, not the broken part.

Get killed by jesus, get conquered by jesus, and live in that love. You are not your own. You are purchased at a Price.

So glorify, got in your body again. Do not look at other people's sins like this. This is a list of your sins.

This is a list of microns. And i'm praying that i'm convicted by this list, by the holy spirit. I'm praying that you're convicted by this list and by the holy spirit.

I am a praying for you. Please pray for me. My name is father. My guy cannot wait to see you tomorrow, gobs.
