Hello and welcome to Football 301. I am Nate Tice. We did it. We are here. By the time you hear this, football might be just starting.
But it is wonderful that football is just starting. We are going to be talking about week one, previewing a few of the games, a couple of ones that grabbed our attention. That we is me, Nate Tice, and my co-host today in a New York studio. Yeah, very fancy. Someone's moving on up in New York. Yeah.
My friend, Charles McDonald. How you doing today, Chuck? I'm doing good. I'm moving on up because I was moving down in a bad way. There's a lot of construction going on, but my apartment, when I say construction, I mean they're literally demolishing the inside of the building that shares a wall with my apartment. It's been bad, but
look at this. I get to sit here in this fancy studio. I didn't have to bring any equipment. They had it all set up for me. I'm feeling good. I feel luxurious, but we're losing the on air sign. So let's get that. Let's get that going in the new studio in New York. But you also had, because like, it's like we all get kickstarted and like, and a certain things happens like, Oh, it's labor day. Oh, that means college football, actual college football week one, not week zero, which is still never going to make sense in my brain. Um,
Then you had a nice tweet, kind of a nice annual tweet, I believe you're going to start doing.
Do you want to read it? I feel it's weird if I read your own tweet. So I want you to read this tweet because it prompted some great responses that I think is just a perfect way to kick us off in the show as we start week one. Yeah. So, you know, people who know me and have followed my work for a while, they know I like to sit around in the sewer, basically, just run it around in the dirt on Twitter. So I asked people like I did before, because I was I was honestly I was sitting on the subway and.
And I was like, I feel like I'm forgetting to do something that I usually do on Twitter. And I remember the Jimmy Graham tweet where last year I'd asked this question and someone said Jimmy Graham was going to score 10 touchdowns last year, which is in line with the prompt of.
We are on the eve of the NFL season, and I want to bring this back. What is the most heinous, reprehensible prediction about the NFL that you have this season? Like something that will really make someone gasp. And when I saw 10 touch for Jimmy Graham last year, that did make me gasp because how could anyone possibly even say something like that? So...
This year, we got a bunch of good responses, but I think the best one or the worst one was Hak Tua on the Manning cast, the Hak Tua girl on the Manning cast, because it's just instantly something you can see happening too. That's a very realistic timeline. Like that, this is a lot of weeks to fill. They have like five guests a show. I don't know if Belichick's doing the whole show, so...
Dude, they did a musical the other day. So anything's on the plate here for Manny Cass. I mean, Hawk to a Girl wouldn't surprise me. But also, I will say, there's a lot of people that seem to think Daniel Jones is going to make the Pro Bowl this year from the responses. Yeah. Malik Neighbors is doing a lot for people. Yeah, that's interesting. I'm going through him right now. Bill Barnwell, After Our Own Heart.
Arthur Smith deserves another head coaching job hype when the Steelers make the playoffs at 9-8 with the league's 26th ranked offensive DVOA. I'll do it. I'll do it. He knew. I'll start the train back up. Just look what he did with Russell Wilson. They made the playoffs. Look at the situational play calling. Victoria with Sam Darnold will start Super Bowl. We're at, what, 59 now? Wow. Impossible to know.
No, I can read Roman numerals from my like two years of Latin. I took it. So I thought Latin would be like, cause I took in like sixth grade and we watched like Indiana Jones and the last crusade and stuff. I was like, this is great. Don't have to worry about Spanish class or anything. And then, yeah, as you'll see, I'm going to try something in Portuguese in a little bit, but it is a romantic language. So yeah, I got a little, I know the root of it at least to help me on the SATs.
No, there's some good ones. Did you have any other favorites on here? There's also a lot of people who seem to think that Bryce Young is going to lead the Panthers to the playoffs, which is, man. This is where you can see the delusion and the optimism in fandom because everyone thinks he's good right now.
David Hellman had a good one. Kyler Murray, all pro caliber season loading. These are just ones I like. Yeah. Luke Braun, I think this is the Cowboys year. There's a timeline. Like there's ones. I like those. Okay. Yeah. Before we move on, I just need to call out our friend Brett Coleman.
He says Spencer Rattler is going to start against the Falcons and win. And you need to stop that. I love that. That's a good one, Brett. You need to stop that now. I like that one. I like that one. No, there's some good ones in there. Yeah, I have to go back to it. But yeah, like I said before, we'll be doing this every Thursday, though. Not that tweet. Maybe. Maybe if we get prompted on something. But...
We will be previewing the week's NFL action. Usually not getting to maybe a little tidbit on the Thursday game, which is Ravens Chiefs. Great game, of course. But we will get a Friday game preview this week. And then hitting up usually about a half dozen, five or six of these things that stand out to us. Games, players, trends, anything that stands out. Nice little snack pack of things before we hit the weekend slate of games. So starting off, let's start with that Friday night game.
In Brazil, it is the Packers technically at the Eagles who are minus two are favored. I don't know if there's home field advantage that applies here. Probably not. I don't really know how you handle that. Friday night lights in Brazil. I try to find the Portuguese...
or how you say Friday night lights in Portuguese. And there's two that came up, like the TV show was two day play Pela Vitoria. And I was like, sure, I'm going with that. That one's easier for me to say. So that's what I had. We're going to go, we're going to just kind of point out why we're watching and a thing or two that we're focusing on when these teams are playing and something that will kick us off into these games. So Charles, when you're watching the Packers and the Eagles play,
What are you looking at? What's the number one thing that stands out to you? Are you just keeping track of, or a couple of things? I guess the first thing is something we've talked about all season long or all summer long is a,
Jalen Hurts' first game with Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator versus... I finally see it. And the thing with the Packers defense is I can't tell how good I think this unit's going to be as a whole because I feel like they have some strengths, but they have some pretty low lows. Like the linebacker situation, I wouldn't really be afraid of that. Even the interior pass rush, I don't know. I feel it'd be good stopping the run, but I think we're going to learn a lot about
Jalen Hurts and Kellen Moore and how that fit is going so far because from afar, it looks like you're trying to shove a circle into a square peg. It just doesn't really seem like it fits. And then for Green Bay, I think this will just be a good test for the defense because even with the
the amount of questions we have about the Eagles offense. It's still tough, like, to defend an offense with A.J. Brown, Devonta Smith, Saquon Barkley, Jalen Hurts at times. Like, so you're going to learn a lot about both teams, I think, as they both try to establish themselves as championship contenders.
Yeah, it really, it's a great proving ground game. Like just to start us off, you don't, there's going to be week one overreactions, especially a Friday night Island game. Are you kidding? There's the next two nights are gonna be insane with the reactions that come from it, but it's fun. I'm excited to watch these quarterbacks. Of course, quarterbacks with stuff to prove in different ways.
Jordan Love, is this real? I think it is, but still you got to do it. You can't just do it once or twice. Jalen Hurts with a new offense coordinator, like you mentioned with Kellen Moore, that whole offensive system. By the way, first person I've heard ever maybe say a circle peg into a square hole.
I've always said square peg into a round hole. And so that was, I wonder if that's a regional thing. That was, that was new for me. Yeah. You said that. And I really peaked me up a lot. I was like, what was that? But I, I'm excited. Of course, watch these quarterbacks, but what you mentioned, the Packers defense against the Eagles offense is kind of what I'm more keen on watching because I,
It's going to be the single high defense with the new defense coordinator, Kellen Moore. He's very kind of traditional how he packages plays. So it's single high, two high kills. So it's like if you're too high, they run these plays. If it's single high, which is what the Packers run, this is where the box count comes tied in. If it's single high, that usually means more of a loaded box to stop the run as well.
that he will kill to more passes or certain types of run more outside hitting runs. So single high against AJ Brown, Devante Smith, isn't my favorite way to live. Like that's not like what I want to see, but let's, let's see it. Like maybe the funkiness gets them sometimes, but,
If you throw a different pitch than they're used to every week, it can work, but they've had time to prep. Kelmore is pretty good at prepping. Watch week one last year against the Dolphins defense when they were going toe for toe with the Dolphins offense. So I think in theory, this defense should be better against the run just because they have more bodies naturally there, even if the linebacker play, like you said, is a little eh. But it also could be Eagles offensive line and Saquon against...
what has been recent history of bad run defense, but hopefully in theory is better against the run, but we'll see how those matches are on single outside. So, is Jair playing? Yeah, he's playing, right? I don't even remember. He should be. It's always a question, though. Yeah, you're right. I know. I should have that injury. But I'm pretty sure, yeah, they're healthy on defense. Yeah, they're healthy. Yeah.
Yeah, I think they are. I think they're healthy. Pretty healthy. I know they've had some O-line stuff, but yeah, they're healthy. No, I know. That's a great matchup, man. Stokes is finally back in there. DB... Stokes on their receivers is what I'm interested in. I feel like that could be a total wild card because he's missed so much time. I know. And he's had flashes. And then it was just, oh, he missed time. I know. Yeah, he's another guy. I mean, their DB room, they had all these different guys stepped up and then they added to it. So...
That's why they were able to trade guys away in the middle of the season last year. But yeah, this is a great early kind of gauge for these teams as they kind of get into the season. Then we move on to a divisional matchup. We're getting to Sunday now. I got one more thing on Packers. If I was a Packers fan watching Boston College just beat the absolute crap out of Florida State this weekend, I might be a little bit, little bit red flag.
Red flag because these are the same guys that Jeff Halfley had last year when they weren't doing anything and they just beat the crap out of a team that even in a diminished state where Florida State is still they still have a lot more talent than Boston College so did we just get worse?
to jump to happily i don't know he didn't call offensive plays so yeah o'brien they were a bit more organized last year yeah no yeah no you're right you're right and it's and when i signed the preseason i was like all right you always want to just be like all right in preseason you can see what the early install is if that's what it means by being vanilla so i was curious if it was like all right he's back in the nfl he's not gonna just go all single high you know
And it kind of was. So that's where I was like, all right, this is what you're doing. There's only a couple of guys doing it like this. I think some of the blitz stuff's pretty cool, but again, got to see it. And you're going against, again, they'll test Stalin and they'll test Juergens at center too. And Hertz, you have to, because that's been kind of shown what, how you attack Hertz. So, all right, moving on to a divisional round or a divisional round, a divisional game, the AFC South, a juicy game.
divisional game. We have the, the Houston Texans at the Indianapolis Colts. Wow. This is a fun one for week one. We have two very talented young quarterbacks and CJ Stroud who had a dynamite rookie year. I think we're all high on them. He looked awesome this preseason and Anthony Richardson. I'm personally high on them. I believe you are a little bit too Chuck, but also just at the very least Uber talented has shown flashes of pretty cool stuff.
Interesting defense to go against. Where are you starting with this game? What are you focusing on when you turn on this game? Probably on your multi-view on Sunday. I want to see really just how the Texans run defense handles, you know. First, it's a tough test. Dang it. I wish I was having different notes than you. I had two things. Okay, I do too. So, all right, good. One was just that the Texans, like just if a Texans run defense,
First game. That's a tough test, man. You're about to get... Really tough test. ...fludges, dude. So, you know, we've talked about the spine of the Texans defense all season. This is going to be a tough test. Game one, right off the bat, here comes Anthony Richardson, Quinton Nelson, Jonathan Taylor. No rest for the weary. You're not going to get to, like, ease into this season. And on the flip side, it's interesting to see...
like if any of these receivers are good enough to get open against Derek Stingley, because that's one area where I see the Texans having a big advantage. Like if you feel like Michael Pittman is, you know, someone that's going to be a big threat for you, you can really just put Stingley on him and that might be enough to just take him out of the game entirely. I mean, you get to see how everyone else holds up, but I just want to see if they can throw against Derek Stingley because it's not like this is going to be a, a, a,
Matchup that goes anywhere you see him twice a year for the next ten years based on how he looks last season I think that's gonna be really interesting matchup just as like a development for their passing game All right Do we have anyone that can get get one on the lead guy and we're gonna learn that pretty fast The upside is of course with Richardson but like all these receivers Pittman Pittman's more like are you and are you just a high high end to? How high of a one are you in a real passing game? not just like a fine passing game or if he passing game and
And it's just, they're all ideas and their ideas. I like, cause they're just a bunch of big boy Colt receivers that all of them can run a little bit and all of them can catch at least have a catching range. Pierce's hands are a little, if you pick it, you can go up and get it, but I'm actually really excited to watch that Colts run game versus the Texans run defense. There's,
Small bloodbath potential here of the Colts' run game against Texas defense. Again, the defensive tackles make me a little worried about the depth of them. Mario Edwards playing on the inside is not my favorite thing in 2024, starting as well. They can get after the passer, though. The Colts do a good job of protecting their line. Their line's solid across the board, but do a nice job protecting them, play action stuff, RPOs.
They're going to have to work for it. This 49ers, this Texans defense, you know, much like the 49ers defense there, you kind of know what you're getting with it. Like, you know, they have some blitzes, but it's a lot of quarters cover three stuff. So, all right, they got to perform like as this offense or defense improvement good enough to hold up against it. So I'm very excited to watch this. I'm also excited to watch like kind of a talk about those big receivers for the Colts. Like all three of them can play inside AD Mitchell, Alec Pierce and Michael Pittman, but
Jalen Petrie would be the nickel player for the Texans, and he's a dynamo in the slot, not the biggest guy. But that's kind of a fun little matchup, too. I'm going to watch because the Colts will like to use those big guys and do all bunch sets and screens and bubbles and all those types of things. So that'll be fun. And also, Stroud against a pass defense with who knows who playing, like a who's who of who's that playing at corner. Yeah, that's going to be very interesting. So this game has some...
some boat race potential. You know, like it really does. Gus Bradley with one DB and that one DB is your Nickelback.
We'll see. Like you said, boat race. Where does Nico Collins line up? It's CJ Stroud against a defense that he knows what every coverage is because Gus Bradley runs on a couple things and doesn't really describe it. And if he corners. I do like Brents, but it's an interesting group. This is where it gets tough for the Colts where you're like, okay, we can put Kenny Moore on Tank Dell. Cool.
Okay. What else? What else we got? We got Juju Branson, Nico Collins. We still got Stephon Diggs out there we got to worry about. And then just like Stroud's prowess as a passer in general. It's a lot of stuff to defend. And even like when you start building out like the Texas passing game, even Dalton Schultz is like a fourth option is pretty nice. Pretty solid. Pretty solid. Mixing catch too. It's,
Yeah, that Colts defense, because they are, again, it's two defenses that we talk about in a row. They're going to be in so much single high and everything. It puts strain on linebackers. It puts strain on the outside corners. And that's why, I don't know, against a offense that's a Shanahan offense, they are going to run the ball. So expect plenty of zone, traditional zone, because that's what you can run against these single high looks, those loaded boxes looks.
But again, what is everyone saying about the Texans pass catchers right now? They're like, oh, this is the elite trail. We got three number ones, all that. It's no, it's really a one, two and a three, but they are all legit options. That is just a, that's just a day. I just, he has to break tendency, but he just doesn't do it. So at least he's not going to try and blitz Stroud because that's already, you don't do that. Like Stroud's already proven. You just don't blitz him, which is like, that's why he's one of the good ones. All right. All right.
So that's the first two games. We're going to take a quick break, come back with a couple more from the NFL Sunday slate.

Got a sunshine matchup, sunshine state matchup here. That is, I'm going to call it the Orange Bowl. We got the Jags at the Dolphins. Dolphins are minus three and a half.
uh early miami game always always dicey we'll see how the weather is actually what is the weather i mean i'll find it when you're talking i thought you meant dicey in the sense that this is the part of the season where they're liable to score like anywhere from 45 to 70 points that also that it is dolphin weather oh it looks nice it's high of 89 that's
That's not bad. Yeah. Okay, not bad, not bad. But, okay, so, no, that's a very good point. It's good weather when you are watching this matchup, which is pretty fun. What are you focusing on, though, Chuck, between the Dolphins and the Jags? Nielsen's first time against the supercharged team. He's a good defensive coordinator, but, like,
I feel like, I don't know what it is about early in the season. Maybe it's just you haven't seen as much yet. But, like, the Dolphins, they just find ways to create so much space. Like, if you... I actually went back and watched some of the clips from the 70-point win a couple days ago, a couple nights ago. And the thing that strikes out, it's like...
There's just like all their routes, like they're just breaking people's rules left and right, left and right. And the reads are so easy and they happen so fast because you talk about Tua being one of the fastest guys to release a ball. Well, it helps me have two 4-2 receivers that are like actually credible receivers, not just fast guys, like they're real football players. So when you start to try to defend that, man, I would just be fascinated to see what the game plan is because...
I think we've seen, like, late in the season when the injuries start to pile up, it can be tough for Tua to kind of overcome what's been placed in front of him. But right now, you should be in pretty good shape going into week one. So I don't really see...
why like the early season trends from dolphin seasons in the past would stop here. I think they're going to score a decent amount of points. It's just really about like, all right, Nielsen, what can you do to mitigate that? Like what counter punches do you have just to kind of give your players a chance against how much speed they have? Yeah, it's a great styles make fights.
That's kind of what I'm looking at too. We've kind of pumped up Nielsen and this Jags D a little bit there. We haven't both had much top 10 D both at the dolphins as a, at the very least top six, top seven. I think we did. We were both, we did. And Matt did all had the same conclusions. Like, well, September and October, like hell yeah. November. Yeah. And then, yeah. Okay. And then we'll, we'll talk in December. This is week one. They've had time off. They're fresh. They have already, uh,
been showing things in the preseason that have me excited. A little bit of John New Smith end around action, a little bit of, you know, River Cray craft in there, but they also design wise, they're still doing the tight end stuff that I'm really excited to see. And I just think that with time off, yeah, I, you know, Mike McDaniel is going to come out there with some, some cool stuff against this defense though.
That's a bruising defense. They want to, they don't want to fight you with finesse. I think it's a mistake. It's like when you go against the old seven second or less Phoenix suns, like going tit for tat with them is, is suicide. What you want to do is rather, you know, bruise them up, beat them up. That's the classic, you know, you want to be the brawny side against the speed side. So that's what I want to see with all these long guys, how they push the pocket, how they push the outside. If they try to hit it on those outside runs, uh,
What has given this Dolphins defense or offense issues in the past is physicality on the outside. I don't know if, you know, LeJarrius Steen's not walking through that door, but they have Tyson Campbell. And, you know, they have other really physical defensive backs, I think, in their room. So you don't go, you know, MPH for MPH against this team. But I think actually the Jags have better answers than most defenses do, even if it's going to be impossible to, you know, keep them alive.
At the very least under 20. Yeah. So that's a good day. That would be a great day. You know, but that's, that's, that's a hard ask, even if we are very high on this defense. And then on the other side, it's the Jags offensive line, even workable.
Like that's, that's why I want to see that. It's not, they might be, they, they could be okay, but it's just, I have kind of have to see it and have to see a run game. And we kind of came across the realization of the Jordan Brooks, David Long linebacker pairing with the dolphins and, and that type of dolphins defense that is going to have some of that run a little bit. Everything used to linebackers every which way.
Excited to see that. Excited to see those two. So any other things when the Jags had the ball? I was interested to see what the Dolphins' defense with Weaver looks like. Yeah, so yeah. This is his first time really getting the call plays. I mean, he left...
Basically, he was the assistant head coach of Baltimore to go call plays and try to get a chance to be a head coach down the line. So this is his chance to imprint things. And it's not a bare cupboard, you know? It's not. It's not at all. We talked about the linebackers. Jalen Ramsey is still here. And when he's on the field, he's still an absolutely elite cornerback in my eyes. So...
It might be tough at times because we spent the summer describing the Jaguars offense as the offense that's going to take a bunch of long twos, difficult long twos, at least to start off until maybe Brian Thomas gets comfortable. And, you know, here comes the defense. It's got some dudes. You might be able to run the ball between the tackles a little bit, but if you're getting into these situations where it's—
Third and seven plus constantly, which I could also see happening just because the Jaguars play calling situation seems a little disorganized right now. That's not a situation I want to beat against this defense. Yeah. Weaver in this is where that quote unquote Raven scheme, which is just run everything. Well, that's, that's their scheme. Just be well coached. I, that's, I just keep cracking up of that. But yeah,
Or you see it the best is on passing downs. That's exactly what you're saying was the third down stuff. So it, but Trevor Lawrence can drop back and progress and find some fun stuff. They're not wasting touches on, you know, converted, uh,
defensive backs anymore that helps even if it's just a minor it's a it's a decent improvement even if it's not my favorite in the world so i i do think that's going to be interesting is all the passing down stuff i want to see how the jags use their tight ends how they block it up how they are they going to do play action shots that's another way to attack this type of defense you know hopefully you catch them um so we'll see uh i think it's a very very fun matchup on the very least one side of the ball interesting on the other one all right moving on
to a team, two double-digit win playoff teams last year that got, please beep this out, blown the f*** out.
How do they come back this year? That's what I want to see from both of these teams, and that's what I'm keeping my eye on. But when you're watching Browns-Cowboys, Charles, what are you keeping your eyes on? If you at least one of these teams gets to say, all right, well, our quarterback is good. Right. Well, actually, I don't know if they know that because they're about to let him hit free agency in a few months. Unrestricted free agency for Dak Prescott is a guarantee. No tag clause.
No tag. Oh, my God, Jerry. Whatever. So the whole thing with the Browns is it's the same thing that everyone knows. If Deshaun Watson can get back to looking like he did in 2020, this is a Super Bowl contender. But if not, then I don't really see why they should be favored over Dallas because based on what we have seen
in front of us with Deshaun Watson. He's played 12 games as a Browns quarterback and almost all of them have been terrible. Just bad football. I know people say, oh, he went 5-1 with Deshaun Watson as a starter last year. Please, just give me a break. Watch the games. Look at the numbers. He was a bad quarterback in all of them. So maybe you're just looking at a point where
You don't quite trust the rookies on Cowboys' offensive line. This is a tough matchup with the Browns' defense. Maybe that's where this is coming from, but man, I would feel pretty comfortable taking the Cowboys here. I do think this will be a tough matchup for Dak Prescott, but...
Deshaun Watson has just been a total zero so far that I don't really see why he would have much success against the new Mike Zimmer defense that still has Michael Parsons and will be getting Trevon Diggs back. I kind of just didn't even pop that in my brain until right now. Yeah, Deshaun Watson versus the Mike Zimmer third down defense is going to be very interesting. My third down...
for the Cowboys defense might get off to a decent start. How the Cowboys run game looks against this Cowboys, or I'm sorry, sorry, the Browns run offense against this Cowboys run defense. It's going to be interesting. That's a huge question mark. My first note though is like different types of questions at QB. One is like, what are you guys doing? And one is, are you sure?
And I think they could apply to both. Yeah, exactly. And so, yeah, I want to see how they both come out there. We've talked much about the Tyler Guyton and Cooper Beebe at center and left tackle for the Cowboys. You still are starting to see
two rookies on the road at the two hardest positions on the offensive line. That's not easy for anybody as talented as you are, as good as you could be like, that is just not an easy ask against miles Garrett against, against the Browns defensive line. So expect a lot of chip help, which again is going to limit what you can do in the past game. We'll see. We'll see how it all comes together.
Again, McCarthy and the Cowboys' offensive staff and defensive staff have had time to prep for all this. It's a very traditional NFL matchup here, as far as scheme. You have Zimmer, McCarthy, Schottenheimer,
And then on the other side, you have Jim Schwartz. Stefanski is like as basically as a 2005, you know, NFL offensive coordinator. Might as well just be Scott Linehan. Like this is, yeah, it's just a very interesting kind of matchup styles matchup, I think. Also, Cowboys run game. Can you be can you be consistent on offense? So really, it's a run game question for the Cowboys on both sides of the ball. That was a big thorn in their side last year. Tony Pollard was not a good fit for what they needed. They need more of the efficiency guy there.
Zeke, maybe 40% Zeke can get there. Zeke without the last E. Like that, you know, Zeke. Maybe they just have to stay on schedule because that'll help out this offense so much and expect plenty of CeeDee Lamb because he'll get some single coverage as well. All right. Next one up, we have what I feel like is...
but I feel like I just watched this game because I did and it was a good one. We got the Rams at the lions lines are minus three and a half. When you're watching the golf Stafford, I don't know, like one's revenge.
I don't know what the other one would be. I don't know how Lions feels with Stafford. They love him, right? But it's also kind of just a little weird with it. It's a weird relationship. It's a weird relationship because I don't think Matthew Stafford loves Lions. Because the last year before the playoff game, they were asking about it and he was kind of like, I don't really care.
Not like I had the best years of my career in Detroit. It's interesting, yeah. The Lions are in such good graces right now, and they are doing a lot of good things right now. I mean, just even bringing some of the old legends back. The fact that they've gotten Barry and Calvin Johnson, even speaking to them again is a good start. So Dan Campbell has a lot to do with that as well. But yeah, what I'm watching with this game is
those quarterbacks, how this offense, how these offenses look, because these offenses rock and we get to see the Rams offense, hopefully healthy, hopefully against what we are pretty excited about in the Lions defense that we think is can be reconfigured, should be good against the run they were last year. And I think they even improved on that. It's a very fun strength on strength matchup for that Rams offense versus the Lions defense. However, do you want the honors of the other side of the ball?
The Lions offense versus the Rams defense. I figured that we both had notes on this. We were talking about third down stuff with Zimmer earlier, and my third down question for this game is, how many third downs do the Rams defense get to?
Oh, you want to put an over-under on it? Put an over-under on it. I'll go six. Oh, I was going to say five. Five? Okay, perfect, perfect. So five and a half. Five and a half, five and a half. Okay. Let's go slightly over. Okay. But dude, they're going to get mauled, I feel like. Mauled. I'm pretty terrified. Unless Braden Fisk is like,
If he's a Braden Fisk from the ones I've seen in Madden Sims, it's getting like 30 TFLs as a rookie. Maybe you have a chance. But, man, this seems really, really tough. Like, you need Kobe Turner to step up in a way that is big time. You need Jared Versus and Braden Fisk to step up. And, you know, I was actually looking at the Rams defense the other day because I wrote a little short thing about it for this week's 4Verse column. But they're outside of...
Yeah, a little plug there. A little plug there. Outside of Troy Reeder, which is... Hold on. I want to see where this sentence is going. Dude, he's the veteran. He's the veteran on this defense. You're saying it's all the young guys, right? Yeah, he's the oldest guy in the front seven because all the rest of the guys were... Yeah, he's the green guy.
Troy Reeder's the green dot linebacker, which is, man, if I'm Ben Johnson, I'm like, see, this is what I stayed in Detroit for. So we can go run for 400 yards a week. This is a lot more fun. This is a lot more fun than dealing with whatever they got going on here in Washington. Yeah. My thing to watch was, are the Rams going to be able to slow this down at all? You got Troy Reeder at linebacker. No Anthony Aaron Donald. I have to kind of just keep reminding people that. You have Trey White coming off an Achilles, I believe. Going to try and run with Jameson Williams? Yes.
Okay. That, that just kind of not, uh, again, coaches have time to prep for this. They are not total idiots. They, they are going to look at the same stuff I'm looking at that we are looking at, you know, Chris Shula is going to try and figure out stuff. Are they going to run a lot of cover too, to help them out? Okay. If they do that, then it's going to be pound the rock game. And you got, like you said, they are talented. I like the Rams. I do like their players.
Kobe Turner, the internet's favorite player, but still had a very good rookie year. Byron Young had a good rookie year, kind of tailed off in the second half of the year. But then they add these young guys.
who I like Jared versus a funnel run stopper first, you know, plugger type Fisk is explosive and everything, but he's short armed and they have him at defense. And so I think there's still going to run that kind of hybrid scheme there that they run, but that scheme you can run on and they don't have the equalizer, which is Aaron Donald. These players might be nice and might have potential, but you got two rookies, two second year guys. It's just with none of them with true pedigree, even if they are good players or potentially good players. So against Penny Sewell,
Kevin Seidler, older Kevin Seidler, former Badger, shout out. But you got Frank Ragnow. You got Glasgow. You got Taylor Deckard. You got size. Like that is... David Montgomery's not an easy guy to tackle either. No, and Gibbs is on the outside. Like it's... Oh, I know. It's...
Not my favorite kind of matchup for them, but I am excited about that Rams offense against the Lions defense and see what the Lions DBs and how they go toe-to-toe with that Rams passing game. I think the run games are going to be strength on strength on that side of the ball. But yeah, the other side of the ball could be interesting, could be some fun rewatches on Monday morning. All right, so we are going to be back in a minute after this break with the Monday night football matchup.

We're going to do the Monday Night Football game, and then we're going to do some rapid fire on the rest of the Sunday slate. So Monday Night Football is Jets at 49ers, 49ers or minus four. When you are watching this matchup, a little bit of a revenge game here. We got Salah.
Going against his, you know, his old team where he launched from, which will be fun. But when you're watching this game, Charles, what are you focusing on?
Well, there's a lot here. There's so much here. Other than a particular quarterback. Which one? Right, which one? I still, I mean, I'll take the easy one. Aaron Rodgers, first game back. Hey, just because it's easy and obvious doesn't mean we have to skip it. I have to remind myself this sometimes when I want to jump into Tyler Guyton notes. Yeah, it's the most...
Important storyline for the season, maybe, where you have Aaron Rodgers and he hasn't played really since 2022, which was just like an OK year for him. Then he gets traded to the Jets. We all know what happens last year. And now he's back. But here's here's just the cold, the hard truth. Like he's a 40 year old quarterback coming off an Achilles.
there's no way to know what that looks like because, yeah, he's played enough and he's been good enough where he could overcome this and, you know, kind of readapt his game to his new, you know, his new physical reality or he could just stink and just not good enough because he's,
just not physically capable enough to play the whole season. There's really no way to know, but you learn quick. You got Nick Bost is going to be coming after your rookie offensive tackle in a few days. So we will learn really quickly about how healthy Aaron Rodgers is. Yeah, we definitely, definitely will. Yeah, it's a quick kind of like, all right, you guys ready? Like, here we go. Like Tyron Smith has probably had plenty of matchups against Nick Bost. Actually, you know, right side, left side kind of thing, but
Aaron Rodgers is the thing I'm watching to and focusing on because like you said, it's one of the most important subplots of the season because of the ramifications that AFC East has
pretty open and it feels like, you know, there's three at least good claims at it. And also just, it's a battle in the AFC. The only kind of historical precedence for this. And the really is it's so hard because these quarterbacks are playing older. There's really no historical precedence for this. And the only guy I could come up with, with a 40 year old coming off an Achilles star player. I looked at Kobe, Kobe Bryant, who was 35 when he hurt his Achilles. It was the end of the season, 34, uh,
I don't know if anyone knows Kobe's life. I'll say the last game. I'm not trying to go after Kobe, but Kobe really fell off. And I know an NBA guard. The last game where everyone just got out of the way and said, go score 100 points. Right. Go have fun. NBA guard is way different than NFL quarterback, but both require athleticism and both require movement and both require burst.
especially Rogers's game, which, you know, was feel and everything, but you still require the movement to move in that spot from spot to spot. Tom Brady was able to do a lot with not be able to move a lot. Peyton Manning, his late career drew breeze a little bit too, but it's still not a 40 year old coming off an Achilles. That's just, it's, it's just a little bit of a different ask than an ACL and ankle, all these types of things.
So that's just it's just going to be interesting to focus on, especially against a defense that's not an easy ask, but has questions on their own on their own side as well. Kind of have really picked apart this 49ers defense like, man, they're losing a lot, a lot more than you would think. They still have the stars Hargrave, Bosa, Warner, Lenore, Ward, all these guys, the safeties, you know, depending on the health on them. They have plenty of good players, but Greenlaw is not in there.
All right. They don't have Armstead now, you know, kind of doing some of the dirty work inside and outside. They have solid options, but it's just not the same. It's just kind of the same stuff with the Jets defense where it's, yeah, it's good. Jets defense, I think is going to be good to very good, you know, because they have a little more complete, complete teams and complete units, but it just lost a little teeth up front. And that just has me feeling a little different about how I talk about them. As long as you have Bosa and Warner and those corners, that's a great starting point. So in our grave too.
But yeah, the Jets, hypothetically, if they're healthy and these guys are playing well, could run on them. Like they actually have some answers on there. And I think they'll try that a little bit. I'm curious what the target split is going to be for the Jets too. Of course, this week, Garrett Wilson, 30% plus target share.
But how the other guys get divvied up, how the tight ends are used, how the other receivers are used, you know, how much is Breeze Hall used in the past game? That's another thing I'm kind of focusing on with this. So with the Jets offense, the foreigners defense, it really is the is this good now bowl? Like that's kind of how I feel about that side of the ball. And the other one is just, you know,
Let's just see that 49ers offense and Jets defense is just a great battle because it's just, you know, Salah Shanahan. They know each other. They have we have good players. That's going to be really fun. Really complete players, players that play in their units for a while, too. And really, you know, maybe if the fronts aren't the best, they're still very good with the Jets. Quinn Williams against the interior defense.
Hold on to your hat. Hassan Redick is at $7 million fine money now. Still hasn't showed up. And then on the back end, you've got Iyuk against these corners, Sauce Gardner, all this type of stuff. Debo doing all the stuff he does. That side of the ball is going to be very fun to watch, though. All right. Rapid fire? Rapid fire. All right. Going on to the Sunday games. One thing, we'll go Steelers at Falcons.
what you got there uh i don't know the falcons i don't i just don't think the steelers have enough juice to score i mean if there was a defense they could score against it might be this one but this offense it just feels so limited to me i'm not really scared of it at any point i i'm more optimistic about the steelers in a month from now or six weeks from now uh their offense i don't know if they're even playoff worthy but russell wilson's already has a calf it seems that so he was limited practice i believe
Yeah, so I don't think the offense is all systems go yet. Even if I do like where the run game is going to end up, you're playing a lot of young players, low on proven. We'll see. The passing game still, I have no idea how to picture it. We'll see how this all comes together. I also like the Falcons on that side. All right, this one I'm very excited about. We got Cardinals at Bills minus six and a half. This is a little bit of a football 301 bull. What do you got for this game? I kind of think the Bills blow them out. I don't see how they stop Josh Allen from scoring.
I agree. I think, I think the bill, I want to match show or did the show with Matt with a fancy film room. Make sure you check that out. And we, I was talking about the bills run game and really pumping it up, but it's, it's really doing it for me. I think they're going to pound the pound. I kind of came with a,
Bully spread was the phrase I came. Yeah came to yeah and just the you know, count Coleman It's a nice power slot, you know, don't Kincaid even if he's not like gonna you know block at the end I don't know they could do some fun things with I think that personnel and I think the run game really makes sense and this is not even including Josh Allen so yeah that an additional Ray Davis and
The other receivers are good blockers. Mac Hollins is there. Your guy, Mac Hollins. But he's there to block. Desmond Ritter's guy, Mac Hollins? Yeah. Oh, my God. Right. But he's there to be a de facto tight end. So him and Kincaid can do some inverse stuff. Him and Coleman can do some inverse stuff. So pretty fired up about that Bills offense. And Cardinals defense is funky, but not good yet.
Cardinals offense though. That's gonna be fun. I'm with you down the bed. That's a top. That's a sneaky tough test for the bill secondary if I were betting man, I Cardinals cover but yeah I would go next to we go Titans at Bears With what are you looking at here? This is tough. I think I would roll the Bears to just win outright I think it's gonna be
tough game. Only because it's Caleb Williams' first start, right? So, like, it could go supernova, but these are still NFL players that he's playing against for the first time, and you're going to have to get used to how that works. But I'm excited to see the Bears' defense because they should eat the face of this Titans offense based on what's going on in the box. You have a second-year quarterback and an offensive line. While I think there's potential, you should say, if you're the Bears' front, we should have success against this
today or week one right this is this is a montez sweat game uh because even if he's uh going against latham he actually matches up okay with latham because he can match him strength for strength but he also lines up against the right tackle which is so petite for her
But that Titans run game is, again, it's another unit. Or I should say Titans offense is a unit I'm more excited to watch in the back half of the year. And Levis, this is a tough ask because the Bears are going to make you work for it. And Levis is boom or bust that quarterback. He's going to launch stuff. This is a defense that kind of like it could work if you push it over the top, but they're going to dare you to do that. And they can punish you because they got a lot of good players. I'm with you on the Titans. I view them.
Not pulling this off, but I do think they're going to keep it tight because they got a lot of vets on that defense. Even if I do like what the bears offense is and you got Jeffrey Simmons going against Jenkins and then two kind of quasi NPCs that that can be NPCs. I want to go. What's the step up from NPC? Would it be like side character level one character? Yeah. Level one.
God, where are the XP builders? You just beat them all up. Oh, the XP farmers? Yeah, XP farmers. Like you have some South Park where they're playing the World of Warcraft and they go into the forest to fight boars for like a month. They just get bigger and bigger and bigger. That's me during the NFL season. I'm moving from this chair, man. I was looking at myself in the mirror today. I was like, whoof.
Oh, I'm into, I'm into make sure you shave before you do a show season because the jowls can't handle any beard right now. Any neck beard right now. All right, moving. Yeah. Cardio's got to get picked back up. All right. Next on we got, ooh, Patriots at Bengals. Bengals are minus eight and a half. Patriots, Bengals, where you at with this, Chuck? I watched Jacoby percent in the preseason. I don't need to say anything more.
He had a fun run, but clearly he's a guy that's going to need the players around him. Doesn't quite have that just yet. So even though we look at the Bengals defense and say, ah, maybe there's players, there's points where it's kind of weak. I don't think that this Patriots offense in the manner that's currently set up in,
I don't think they can really take advantage of that. So maybe when you put Drake May in, it'll turn a little different. But Chip Cooley-Bressette, he's on a bad streak right now and doesn't really have the infrastructure to help him get out of that. For the Patriots to live in this game, they have to pound the rock. And I'm optimistic about that run game. We'll see. There's still, as everyone else, reconfiguring the offensive line and figuring out the best five and doing all that. I am more bullish on them than most people. But that bullish means...
23rd best offensive line in the league. That's bullish. But this Bengals defensive line run game is not really the scariest one run defense. So they can maybe, you know, feel decent about themselves. But like you said, I got to see how Persep plays and whether the male arm starts playing. That's really want to see how healthy does Burrow look as well. This is not an easy defense to go against. Wouldn't be my favorite week one defense to go against.
And last week, last year, I know Belichick's not there, but there's a lot of same people there. This Patriots defense, they made Jalen Hurts and that Eagles, they showed the warts early for that Eagles offense. So are they going to do that a little bit the same for the Bengals? I don't know if they can get all the way there, but I think this might be a little tighter.
All right. Next up, one quick, it would just be an asterisk from earlier. The Colts are plus three at home. I do like that, by the way, if anyone cares. But anyways, get on to the next one. One of the near and dear to your heart, NFC South battle, Panthers at Saints. Saints are minus four.
I don't know. This is not this is nasty. I'm sorry. No, no. If you if you are looking at this game and you're hovering over like, am I going to call that hotline, buddy? Because this is a stay away. That's what that's what I would say. The only interesting part about this game to me is what does Bryce Young look like in game one of Dave Canale's new system? I really don't.
Care about the Saints this year until they play the Falcons twice. I don't think this team is very Interesting at all like that free Chris Olave That's that's the banner for the same season this year free Chris Olave because he does not deserve this He's much better than playing in the circumstances. They currently is yeah, I remember she cheated and yeah all those guys they uh, I
Bill's trade for Chris Alave. Free him. Ooh. I think, yeah. I think this is going to be a low-scoring game. I think the Saints defense is good, actually. Actually, I like the Saints defense. I think the Panthers defense has some guys. Not really, though. Derek Brown. But the Saints offensive line is not much.
And so, yeah, I think this is, I don't know how to feel about this game. I'm staying away. I'll review it after a few weeks and we'll see how it comes out. Come back to the round trade deadline. It's not the easiest defense to go against for Bryce Young and then like a reconfigured offense. So I will be curious about how that looks. So I think that is what the focus on. If you're betting on that, like get help. All right. Next up, you got Vikings at Giants. This is the two year ago, like we shouldn't be here bowl. The Giants,
Ah, man. Giants are the other home team that are not favored. They are plus one and a half. I'm taking the Vikings if I were betting this. Charles, how about you? What are you feeling about this game? Ah, nostalgia. This was the first game I covered in person ever. First NFL game. Vikings-Giants 2019. The Vikings-
absolutely demolished the giants um i remember who was no no that was the next week when chase edmund went off against the giants uh but the week before adam feeling had a good game against the giants okay i remember i talked to adam after the game but this one i i kind of like the the the vikings to smash here like am i going crazy for thinking that because it's a fun matchup but it's a
Are you kidding? Daniel Jones versus Brian Flores? Yeah. And the thing on the other side is if Sam Darnold can just survive the onslaught from the defensive line, you got Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison. Deontay Banks can only cover one guy at a time.
Yeah. I think it's a war of attrition game for the Vikings offense. Just withstand. Just hopefully you get some good... It's a field position game and then hit a couple shot plays. I think the Vikings offense is too... I don't mean this as a total negative. Total negative. It's more finesse-y in the run game. It's more finesse... It's good and solid, but it's a very more traditional... To me, it just feels that's their identity. More zone heavy, more that type of run. This Giants defense is...
got speed and size. So it's kind of not the one, my favorite defense to run the ball against. So I think it's going to be good Darnold against the passing game. We'll see how these giants DBs play. I'm optimistic about them, but it's not the easiest ask, but I think it's just, you know, hit a couple of shot plays against some of the young DBs. And then when this is like a, you hopefully went 20 to 10 type of game, 20 to 13 type of game. But yeah,
Sneaky good matchup. Vikings offense, Giants defense. All right, moving on. AFC West Raiders at Chargers, which should be a home game for the Raiders, essentially. How are you feeling about this game? Herbert said he's good, doesn't have to wear anything. And then the NFL said, ah, ah, ah.
Get on that injury designation report. People in Vegas need to know. They need to know that you're questionable, that you were limited practice, apparently. Well, dude, have you seen the SEC is going to start doing injury reports, too, for conference games? I mean, Mike might as well at this point. I mean, let's lose the fest. I agree. Because last week when Trevor Etienne was suspended for the DUI situation he had over the summer,
They asked him this week, oh, is Trevor going to play on Saturday? And Kirby's like, I'm not sure. I can't really answer that right now. But next week when they have their first conference game, he has to say. If someone asks him when Trevor Etienne is going to play, he has to give a truthful answer. Interesting. Gambling money's here. It really is. It really is.
It really is. Oh, man. I know. If anyone wants to know why, just dig. Just do some digging. It's not very far either. No, you're told. It's right here. It's right in front of us. It's right in front of you. Why does the NFL care about injury reports so much? Why? Man, these pregame shows were really focusing on weather.
Why is that? Man, that's interesting. Yeah, but really focusing on that. Before this game, though, I'll go Chargers, just as a nod to Herbert. Here's how I feel about this game. When the Chargers offense is on the Raiders defense, I'm locked in. When the Raiders offense is going to Chargers defense, I'm changing it to something else. That's fair. Maybe see how our junior Colson Dark Horse plays.
That was hilarious, by the way. All three of us. Anyone who hasn't listened to that yet, me, Matt, Chuck, for our defensive rickety or dark horse had the same guy, which actually is pretty, I still think that's pretty crazy. It's a fairly logical answer, but the fact that we all came up with that in a penalty is pretty funny. You nailed it. I want to see how Herbert looks in this. I'm really curious to see how the run game looks with Harbaugh and just, I mean, shoot, they can't wait to announce who's playing fullback for them. They're beating their chest about how much they're going to run the ball. So, all right, let's see how it looks.
Uh, yeah, it's just more of a curiosity. It's like a, yeah, this is like a sideshow game for me. That's kind of how it feels. You know, uh, moving up to the Russell Wilson bowl, the Noah Fant bowl, the Shelby Harris bowl, the Devin Witherspoon bowl. Oh yeah. Right. Yeah. Who else did they get? They got another one in there. Uh, but then we got the Broncos at the Seahawks Seahawks are minus six.
The sneaky Seahawks, as we have kind of felt about them. What are you watching in this game, Chuck? I kind of think that this—I think the Seahawks win, but I don't know if it's going to be like a blowout or anything. One, because even against the bad teams, it's hard to just blow people out every week in the NFL. Six is a lot. Six is a lot. It feels like a lot here. We've talked so much about the Broncos' offense, but I am interested to see what this defense looks like against a new-look Seahawks offense.
Patrick Sutan just got paid. And I think when we were going through their depth chart a few weeks ago, you started looking at their defense like, ah, this is not the worst unit in the NFL. They don't have too many S-tier players. We're turning face on Broncos fans right now. Right, right. The team we've digged the most, the Broncos, one of, and then the team that we've really come around on, the Seahawks, and we go, you know, minus six is too much. Yeah.
Wait, it feels like a little bit too much. Only because I do think there's avenues for the Broncos defense to have success here. You have the best cornerback in football and your defensive line, it's not like world beaters, but
It's not guys to me that's just beginning to run over every play either. So if you can just get them in the third and long situations where you have in one, an offensive line that was not great last year being put in this situation. Two, a first-year NFL play caller being put into situations. And three, you get Sertan just erasing one of these guys in every single play. There's room for success. The flip side is just, you know, can they score enough points? Two.
to keep it close. That's the only thing I go. But I do think that Seahawks offense, Broncos defense, there's room for the Broncos defense to play well there. Yeah, I do too. And Sean Payton and
And he's, he's going to, they're going to be good on the, in the run game. Like I, I saw the vision. I knew the vision. And then I re-saw it this preseason. And it's just like, oh yeah, you're going to just bully the F out of teams. Like that is what they're going to go for. The Seahawks have some personnel up front. I want to see what McDonald, McDonald plans for and what they kind of, how they use their guys. How does Byron Murphy look? How does just a lot of the guys look? Um,
and just how the linebackers look. How do they use Witherspoon? Mention him again, but even guys like Julian Love, you paid him, right? Is he a good player for you? Like, is he actually a needle mover again? And yeah, like you said, it's kind of the Seahawks offense. Broncos defense is kind of a like interesting bowl. I
interesting matchup, I would say. And I'm optimistic about the Seahawks offense. But like you said, it's a good test for them to go against. I'm very interested to review this game because I want to see how Bo Nix played. I want to see how the Seahawks looked overall. So yeah, this is a sneaky fun game.
I feel like they just always play each other for some reason. There's a Peyton Manning versus Seahawks game that's burning my brain. Not the Super Bowl. A regular season matchup they had, I think, after that Super Bowl. That's always stuck in my brain because we stole some plays from them. All right. Next up, we got Washington at Tampa Bay at the Bucs. Bucs are minus three and a half. This is the last one. What are you watching in this game, Charles?
um the back of my eyelids what no this is a sneaky fun one it's not sneaky fun it's more like it's for the wrong reasons to me yeah because i i kind of expect the washington offense to just get bludgeoned by tampa bay and that can be fun within its own right right i think it's a win-win it's like if they handle themselves against it then it's like oh okay if they don't then that's
a blitzing defense against any rookie quarterback is just always a, it's always just a little bit of a, a fun watch, no matter what, who it is or what it is. Yeah.
I, yeah, that's all I'm watching is bowls. Yeah. Bowls, bowls, defense, a little bit of Graham Barton versus the commander's interior like that. I want to see how that Tampa Bay interior offensive line looks, how that new run game, not new run game looks against what I think is the strength of that commander's defense, which would should be the interior guys. So that'd be fun. It's a good little test for them. Yeah. And the other side is just how Daniels and Cliff Kingsbury and, and, and the offensive line handle, um,
Todd Bowles, which is just always an interesting thing to watch. Wow. We went from, oh yeah, let's go from five to six. All of it. We'll go 15 out of 16. Sorry. Sorry. Ravens chiefs. Yeah, this, this will be, it'll be hearing this as that game's going on. So I'm sorry guys, but I do think chiefs cover. All right. But excited. Charles. Okay.
We'll see, but it'll be fun. Guys, thank you so much for joining us this off season. If we will call it that because training camp is a season in itself. And thank you for joining us for this season for the regular season. This is just week one. We'll be here every single Tuesday and Thursday, Tuesday to recap the games Thursday to preview the games. Let's get going. I'm Nate Tice.
You can find me at Nate underscore Tice. Where can they find you, Charles? Find me on Twitter at 4verts, where we will be posting the most insane, like, hot take, one-minute-by-minute reactions to every single game that happens this week. Yeah. What other cartoon gifts or memes you got? I've got a bunch of saves. I've got a bunch of saves. Got some in the holster? Yeah, I'm going to bring some oldies out.
Got some new ones. We're in good shape for the season. I got called out for my Simpsons memes. You know what? I'm doubling down on the bit. You should. It's all I got because I got them like I can, you know, think of it. It's better to be your age than not be your age. Right.
Right? I know. I'm wearing a 7-Eleven sweatshirt. That's why I feel like I'm my age. Still wearing just straight gray. Gray shirt, gray pants. Didn't put any thought into this today. So comfy. I know. My office is cold even if it's 105 out right now in Vegas. It stinks. But anyways, we'll be here every Tuesday and Thursday. I'll be back Tuesday with Matt to recap the game. So like I said, recap to what we've witnessed. Subscribe to us. Please follow us. Rate us.
