172: OnlyFans Prison Guard Records Sex with Inmate, Woman Missing From Luxury Yoga Retreat & Nikki McCain’s EXTREMELY SUSPICIOUS Disappearance

Hey, True Crime Besties. Welcome back to an all-new episode of Serialistly.

Hey everybody, welcome back to an all new episode of Serialistly with me Annie Elise, Headline Highlights Edition. We're breaking down everything going down this week and the end of last in the true crime world because like always there's a lot. We are going to be talking about new cases, some updates in cases, but there's some new ones that have really blown me away and I actually may end up doing deeper dives into a couple of them because they truly are that unbelievable that I feel like

It doesn't. It's going to warrant more time to talk through it than just this smaller segment. But anyway, let's start with the case that is probably on everybody's mind right now, Karen Reid, because officially a mistrial has been declared in the Karen Reid case.

The jury's last note to the judge, this is after going back and forth about three times, saying that they could not come to a unanimous resolution. They were divided. They couldn't figure it out. And the judge kept sending them back, saying, you have to keep deliberating. You have to get to a verdict. Then finally, their very last note to the judge said, "...despite our rigorous efforts, we continue to find ourselves at an impasse. Our perspectives on the evidence are starkly divided."

Some members of the jury firmly believe that the evidence surpasses the burden of proof, establishing the elements of the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. Conversely, others find the evidence fails to meet this standard and does not sufficiently establish the necessary elements of the charges.

The deep division is not due to a lack of effort or diligence, but rather a sincere adherence to our individual principles and moral convictions. To continue to deliberate would be futile and only force us to compromise these deeply held beliefs.

So the judge finally agreed with them and realized, okay, they definitely are not going to be able to reach a verdict, which I had been curious what the split was each time they came back. But apparently Massachusetts is a non-polling state. So I don't know that we will ever get the answer to that. But in any event, the judge declared a mistrial. Then Karen Reed's defense attorney spoke out afterward and spoke directly outside the courthouse, which take a listen. They

They failed. They failed miserably and they'll continue to fail. No matter how long it takes, no matter how long they keep trying, we will not stop fighting. We have no quit. Alan, you're gonna stay on working with Karen? I just have two things to say, folks. Number one, I am in awe of the strength and courage of this remarkable client that I've had the privilege of representing since day one. And number two, I wanna send a message to all of her supporters out there.

Your support was invaluable. We are touched and we ask for your continued support. I'm not from Texas like my colleague here. I'm a Boston kid, but I'll repeat what he said, which is we ain't got no quit. As he was giving this speech, you could see on Karen's face she was smiling. She seemed

Not smug, I think happy and kind of like justice was served, even though they are going to be retrying her, which we will get to that. But on the other hand of all of this, a lot of people didn't see it from the defense attorney side at all. The DA released a statement saying that they do intend to retry Karen, and there actually is a status conference on July 22nd to see what's going to happen next.

So far, none of the jurors that deliberated have spoken out, but there was one alternate juror that did contact the media. Take a listen.

I just spoke with a member of the jury in the Karen Reed trial. She would like to be referred to as juror number three. Obviously, these folks have been through nine weeks of hard work. She did not want to go on camera, but was willing to let me take some handwritten notes and I'll consult them for accuracy. So juror number three was an alternate in this trial. That means that she was present throughout the entire trial, could listen to evidence and testimony, but was not

present during deliberations. First, I asked her, how do you feel at this moment? She told me, quote, exhausted and disappointed. She told me she was, quote, not in the room where it happens. That's the deliberation. She said, quote, it was a lot to sit quietly in a room for almost a week. There were, of course, five days of deliberations.

I asked her what she thought about this case and Karen Reen's guilt or innocence. She said, quote, I approached this trial as if I was taking one of my graduate level classes. I would get an A plus in note taking. And then I'm paraphrasing here. She says.

Paraphrasing again, no one saw exactly what happened. She told me that watching both families throughout this process was painful and tragic.

And then I asked her about trooper Michael Proctor's testimony and his explosive and inappropriate texts about Karen Reed. She said his testimony would not have, even if it were not included in this case, she still believes that there would not have been enough evidence to convict Reed. As for the trial and the jurors, she says it was a lovely group of people. We celebrated birthdays. We even did puzzles together.

A trusted source who spoke to a juror directly and says they were never going to convict Karen Reid of second degree murder. They just didn't believe that she intended to kill her police officer boyfriend of two and a half years ago. They didn't believe it. They said no. All of them. They agreed. We're told that the jury dispensed with that murder charge right away.

And then they split evenly, six against six, on the lesser charges. Now, in an interesting twist of events, or maybe not so interesting if you have been following this case, the same day that the mistrial was declared, Trooper Michael Proctor was also relieved of duty, and he's been moved out of the county's DA detective unit.

His conduct and handling of the Karen Reed case is the subject of an internal affairs investigation, which we have briefly talked about in our deeper dives on this. Plus, remember that when he was on the stand, all those text messages were released. It definitely felt like conflict of interest. I mean, he's just not the guy, in my opinion, at least. So this is a huge blow if the prosecution does retry the case because now their lead investigator who was on this case has essentially been fired and transferred to another unit.

So we'll see what happens in the status hearing if they do actually retry her. I think there could also be a very slim possibility, which I'm not an attorney, so take my word for what it is, but maybe there will be a deal arranged. I know that the state wants the win. They want the guilty. They want all of that. However, I guess for...

you know appearances sake the argument could be will they offer a deal if it's minimal terms whether it's a year in prison maybe it's five years probation probation with some house arrest who knows as long as she does plead guilty so that they get that guilty thing under their belt since there's been so much conversation about there being corruption and cover-ups and all of that

Will that happen? Who knows? Or will we go all through with a brand new trial and see what happens from there? You tell me what you think is going to happen. I can't even tell you. My mind is spinning. Now let's move into another case that a lot of you have been messaging me about, and it is the case of Nikki McCain and Tyler McCain. Nikki McCain is a 39-year-old woman that has been missing since May 17th.

The case was initially investigated by the Redding Police Department after family members had lost contact with her. But now, the Shasta County Sheriff's Office has taken over the investigation. And if Redding PD and Shasta County sound familiar to you, it's because this is the same place where Sherry Papini was living when she faked her kidnapping.

when that whole hoax went down. However, this story is nothing like that at all. Just eight days after she was last seen, her truck was found in Tahoma County, but law enforcement didn't say exactly where the truck was found exactly.

Now, Nikki coincidentally or not so coincidentally, as many people suspect, disappeared right before her husband Tyler was set to go to trial in this month in July for domestic violence charges that caused injuries, false imprisonment and terroristic threats. The charges are from an incident that stemmed back in December of 2023, but he was just now going to be going to trial this month.

According to court records, going back to the incident a little bit, on February-December 1st in 2023, the Shasta County Sheriff's Deputy responded to Mercy Hospital to speak with a woman who was referred to as a confidential victim. In the report, this deputy said that he immediately noticed facial trauma to both of the victim's eyes. He also noticed some trauma to her forehead and her other facial areas.

Specifically, the report says both of her eyes were blackened severely. Both were swollen in what appeared to be a physical assault. Now, when the deputy asked this victim who assaulted her, she told him that it was her husband of 13 years, Tyler McCain.

The woman told him that Tyler hit her with an open hand 10 to 15 times, hit her in the face with this open hand in this single incident. She also said that the assault took place inside their home. The report goes on to say that the victim told the deputy that she was combing her hair in her bedroom before Tyler returned to their home in this, what she's calling a strange mood, and then locked the back door. Tyler then became extremely agitated and was not making any sense.

Then it says, This behavior continued for three hours. This all according to the report, which during this time, apparently he allegedly bound her ankles and her wrists together and placed tape over her mouth. The victim said that she believed she was going to die.

Tyler then turned her over, straddled her, pulled her head back, and told her that he was going to kill her. Tyler allegedly kept hitting her while she was on the ground and even attempted to wrap something around her neck, but thankfully was unsuccessful. The report goes on to say that eventually the victim tried to leave the room, and this is when Tyler jumped on the front of her car and told her not to leave.

The report continues, saying, Tyler reportedly told officials that he believed this fight was between his wife and another woman.

Tyler's statement sounded inconsistent and based on the totality of the circumstances and based on the fact that the injuries upon the confidential victim were consistent with that of domestic violence, nothing was really adding up. So this case started ramping up on social media last Friday when the county district attorney's office in court announced that it filed a motion to dismiss the case against Tyler McCain.

In a statement, the DA's office said that it made the move due to insufficient evidence because the victim, Nikki McCain, is currently a missing person, and there's also an ongoing investigation into her disappearance, which is just incredibly frustrating. Like, how are you going to drop a case due to insufficient evidence?

because the victim is missing. Obviously, wouldn't that kind of raise a red flag? Like, oh, the victim in this case is missing, right? When he's set to go to trial, something clearly is shady and doesn't add up, right? Now get this, this hearing for the dismissal is set for July 5th.

You can imagine that Nikki's family is extremely worried. They've been trying to raise as much awareness as possible about her disappearance, and the Shasta County Secret Witness is even offering an award of up to $10,000 for any information that leads to the location of Nikki. People with information are asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 530-245-6135 or to go to a link, which I will put in the show notes below, and it's where you can submit a tip.

But clearly this isn't looking good. How many times have we heard in a case where something's about to go to trial that either a victim disappears, a witness disappears, something happens? And if it's true that he was that violent with her in the past and there was a history of domestic violence...

Who's to say that it didn't escalate far enough this time? Clearly, by her indication and her admission in that report to the deputy, he did threaten to kill her, saying he bound her, he hogtied her. He said, I'm going to kill you. So who's to say, now that he got his hands on her one more time, if he did, that he didn't actually kill her this time? Let's hope that Nikki is still alive and safe and...

not anywhere near this alleged monster but I guess only time will tell so please share this story and share this case where you can so that hopefully more information and tips are generated and come in

Now let's switch gears to this prison guard in London with a really wild, wild story. This came across my feed last night and I was like, what the hell? Like what is going on here? So recently in London, a prison guard was caught having sex with an inmate in prison. But that's kind of the run of the mill, right? We hear that all the time. We've heard that a million times. But this time it was all caught on tape.

The prison guard is a 30-year-old woman named Linda DeSalsa Abreu. She was arrested after she was caught having sex with this inmate inside a cell at the Wandsworth Prison. The investigation began after this alleged video of the incident was leaked, and get this—

This video was taken with a contraband cell phone and then distributed, published, and it went viral, completely viral online. Now, I haven't seen the video, but apparently you can see Linda in her prison guard uniform engaging in various sex acts inside a cell, all while another prisoner is filming it as it all goes down.

And not only that, but this prisoner is actually giving commentary during the video. Apparently, he was smoking while he was filming it, and he was saying, "'Guys, we made history, and this is how we roll in Wandsworth.'" I mean, just kind of reckless and careless, not only as a prisoner, but also for the guard, right?

So Linda is currently charged with misconduct in a public office. And according to the New York Post, Linda is a married swinger and also has an OnlyFans account. Not that that makes a difference really in anything, but you can only imagine what these headlines have been. It has been like OnlyFans prison guard who is a swinger films herself having sex with a inmate. I mean, you can only imagine how salacious and sensationalized this case is becoming online.

She has also even appeared on UK TV discussing her passion for sex, this in the past, of course. So her sister told the Daily Mail, quote, Linda gave herself to the wrong lifestyle 100%, and now she is suffering the consequences. And unfortunately, this has now fallen down on her husband, our parents, and myself. So Law and Crime recently interviewed a prison consultant who gave a lot of details about this specific prison and tried to find out if she was a victim of the crime.

And trust me, it is not where you want to be. Not by a long shot. The prison consultant said that this prison is, quote, "...so awfully sickening and so filthy that they let the prisoners run the asylum."

According to the BBC, the prison is severely overcrowded. It's filled with vermin, also known as rats, and it is plagued by violence. Definitely not somewhere I would want to be. Definitely not somewhere I would be wanting to have sex inside of. I mean, we're going to see what goes down with this. Like, and again, why film it? Why have another prisoner film it, then publish it?

It's beyond me. So we'll follow this very closely and I will definitely be giving you the updates. We're now going to talk about a couple more cases, especially one that you guys have been submitting quite a bit as well. Okay, so moving into this next case about this Georgia firefighter couple. A search was ongoing for two missing firefighters, Reagan Anderson and Chandler Cablander, who are both 24 years old and actually used to be high school sweethearts.

They were last seen on June 24th, where they were on surveillance video in Reagan's car in a parking lot right outside of Chandler's gym. So like I just said, they used to be high school sweethearts, and they dated for seven years but had broken up. And apparently, it was a very, very toxic relationship. Chandler's mom said, quote, he was telling me that she was blowing up his phone, and he said that she had threatened that she was going to commit suicide, and it's not the first time that she has done that.

Now, two days before they were last seen on surveillance video, Reagan was arrested after keying Chandler's car after she found out that he was on a date with another woman. He had taken this other woman to the local Olive Garden, and Reagan was pissed. And so she literally did this while he was out on the date, went up and keyed his car. She was charged with criminal property damage and for disorderly conduct as well.

Chandler's parents reviewed the surveillance video that was released showing them, you know, right outside the gym, and they said that at 1140, my son walks out of the building and he looks very comfortable, like he just had a workout. He doesn't look rushed as he walks through the parking lot, but then after that, we don't see him again. Now, why they were together two days after she keyed his car or why he got in the car, we don't know exactly. Long story short, Chandler's parents reviewed the surveillance video that was released showing them, you know, right outside the gym, and they said that at 1140, my son walks out of the building and he looks very comfortable, like he just had a workout.

Law enforcement was searching for where Reagan and Chandler could be and were hoping that maybe her car would be spotted somewhere and that everything would be okay. However, on June 30th, Reagan and Chandler ended up being found and they were found inside her car in Tennessee, 400 miles from home. And worse than that, they were dead.

Now as for the cause of death, it's unknown, but investigators in Tennessee are reviewing the crime scene and quote, So we don't know if this was perhaps a murder-suicide, if this was something more nefarious than that.

If she was suicidal, I would imagine it could potentially be a murder-suicide, like I'm killing myself and taking you with me, but a lot of you guys have been requesting information on this case. That's really all we know at this point, but I definitely will keep you updated. Another case that has been just grabbing headlines, and again, not to sound like a broken record, but so many of you guys have been emailing and DMing about, is the case of Taylor Casey.

A very mysterious case about a missing American in the Bahamas has been unfolding, and the details in it are very, very weird. So Taylor Casey, who is 41 years old and from Chicago, she went to a yoga retreat in the Bahamas. And it's interesting, Gwyneth Paltrow actually raved about this yoga retreat on her website Goop. And since then, it's kind of become somewhat of a bucket list yoga retreat for people who love yoga.

The retreat also belongs to a larger organization with destinations in India, France, Austria, New York, and also California. So Taylor told her friends and family that the goal in going to this retreat was to take lessons home in pursuit of physical and mental well-being through yoga. The yoga retreat is on Paradise Island, and that's where Taylor was last seen. She was last seen on June 19th, and the yoga retreat reported Taylor as missing the following day on June 20th.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force said that they found Taylor's phone in the ocean, which is never a good sign, right? They also found Taylor's journal and other personal items, but it's unclear if those were also found in the ocean or if they were maybe found in an entirely different location. However, Taylor's U.S. passport has not been located.

Additionally, the police say that they have deployed divers, drones, tracking dogs, and Paradise Island-based officers all in its ongoing search, hoping that they will discover something. It seems like from that statement alone that the police are doing what they can though, right?

But apparently, on the ground, it's an entirely different situation. Take a listen. This is the western part of the island. So the kind of the opposite side of where Atlantis is. There's not even a road to get down there. You either have to get there by boat or you have to walk along the beach. So it's kind of this secluded part of Paradise Island. And yeah, I tried to get them to talk to us yesterday. They weren't happy that we showed up.

They did release a statement to us today saying they're cooperating in the investigation. And then they also added, and I want to read you this, it said, I should point out that the ashram is a place of meditation and learning and visits by reporters will be disruptive for our guests and interrupt our teaching. As a result, we are not allowing reporters to visit.

So obviously they don't want us to go back there. When we were there yesterday, there were people meditating who were not happy to be asked about this missing woman. Now, Taylor's friends and family members are obviously very concerned, and they have been criticizing the Bahamas authorities and even the retreat, saying that there's this hush-hush probe that's more concerned with preserving the destination's idyllic image rather than with leaving no stone unturned.

They even said the consistent emphasis on not disturbing guests indicated that maintaining the tranquility and comfort of the tourism experience was being prioritized over addressing the critical issue of Taylor's disappearance. Taylor's mother, Colette, even traveled to the Bahamas last week to get answers, and she was told by the police not to speak to the retreat's guests at all about this case.

She said that Taylor's local missing persons flyers aren't even at the yoga retreat at all, not even at the closest police station. It even says that some people at the retreat didn't even know that Taylor was missing. But like any mother would do, Taylor's mom did not listen to the police about not talking to the other guests at the retreat. And she said that she had to beg to talk to students at the retreat, and she said it felt like the students were told what to say and what not to say.

However, a spokesperson from the retreat did release a statement saying, All of us are distraught over Taylor's disappearance, and our hearts go out to her family and friends. With that in mind, I wish to advise you that we did our best to provide Taylor's mother and friends with support and comfort while they were in the Bahamas last week.

So Taylor's family is pleading for more help from the U.S., and a State Department spokesperson said that they have been working closely with the Bahama officials on this case. Also, though, it's worth noting that earlier this year, the U.S. State Department did urge American visitors who go to the Bahamas to exercise increased caution. This is because some parts of the Bahamas have recently become rampant in murder, robbery, and even gang violence. I just really do hope that Taylor is okay and that she is found safe.

But with her phone being found in the ocean, that's obviously not a good sign. Her passport missing as well, that's not a good sign. I just, it's, I'm unclear what the end result will be in this. But my suspicion, and I hope I'm proven wrong, is that it is not going to be a good one. It just feels odd. And I don't know why the retreat is trying to stay so hush-hush. I get it. It's bad for business.

Anytime somebody goes missing or is murdered or anything like that, it's bad for business. However, you're right now on the heels of it being pretty fresh. The disappearance is relatively fresh, certainly not fresh enough within the first 48, but fresh enough that all information is important.

Any viable leads are important. So wouldn't you want to be talking to all the guests, getting all the information, putting those missing person flyers everywhere in a nearby radius of this retreat? So the fact that they're reluctant to do that and that they're also kind of like, not like stalling or refusing to speak, but just not being very cooperative is,

It just feels like they are perhaps more invested in appearances and their business and that tanking rather than actually finding this woman who has disappeared.

So let's hope that some answers do come. It seems like this case is finally now picking up more mass media attention. Good Morning America, News Nation, a lot of people have been reporting on it. So hopefully that does lead to some sort of tip or generate enough awareness that some answers start trickling in so that her family, her friends, everybody can get the answers, but also so that people at that retreat and near the retreat on the island, you know,

observe even more caution if going there, right? It's just what's really happening over there, right? So that's all we've got for today's episode of Headline Highlights.
