Deep Dive

Key Insights

Why did Nick from Massachusetts experience a sudden appearance of a dock while fishing?

Nick and his friend were fishing when they suddenly noticed a dock appear behind them. They were certain it wasn't there when they arrived, as they had been observing the area for over two hours. The dock's sudden appearance, without any logical explanation, led Nick to believe it was a glitch in the Matrix.

What is the Mandela Effect, and how does it relate to Amy's experience in Seattle?

The Mandela Effect refers to a phenomenon where a large group of people have false memories of a specific event or detail. Amy experienced this when she saw a White Claw can on the ground during her run, picked it up, and later found it back in the same spot. This unexplainable reappearance aligns with the Mandela Effect, where memories don't align with reality.

Why did Aaron and his friend experience a house disappearing in Georgia?

Aaron and his friend were driving to a pool party when they noticed a house that was burned down. However, on their way back, the house was intact, and later, when they revisited the area, the house was burned down again. This unexplained change led them to believe they had experienced a glitch in time or reality.

How did Robin's experience with the disappearing carpet in a townhome relate to a glitch in the Matrix?

Robin saw a carpet in the living room of a townhome she was viewing, but her husband insisted there was no carpet. After moving in, they confirmed there was no carpet, leading Robin to wonder if she had walked into a different timeline or experienced a glitch in reality.

What caused Raven's experience of seeing a plane seemingly frozen in midair?

Raven and her sister's friends witnessed a plane appearing stationary in the sky, which they found unusual. This phenomenon is known as the parallax effect, where a moving observer sees a stationary object in the sky, creating the illusion of it being frozen in midair.

Why did Maggie's daughter's underwear disappear and then reappear?

Maggie's daughter's underwear disappeared while she was getting dressed, only to reappear on the bed later. Maggie and her daughter were both certain the underwear had been on her, but it vanished without explanation. This led to the comical term 'disappearing underwear,' and later, another pair of the same underwear appeared in the house.

What happened to Jennifer when her dogs suddenly appeared inside the house?

Jennifer let her dogs out into the backyard, locked the door, and returned to her activities. However, moments later, she found the dogs inside the house, as if they had never been outside. The door remained locked, and the dogs' sudden reappearance led Jennifer to believe it was a glitch in the Matrix.

How did Hannah and her coworker lose half an hour of time while driving in Maine?

Hannah and her coworker were driving on I-95 South when they suddenly found themselves on I-95 North, with the GPS resetting and their text messages disappearing. They lost half an hour of time and ended up back at the same exit they had left earlier, as if they had been rerouted in a loop.

Why did Alonzo and his friend feel trapped in a loop while driving in England?

Alonzo and his friend visited a nature preserve known for ghost lights but felt an overwhelming sense of dread. They tried to leave but found themselves back in the same town, unable to find the exit. They experienced a repeating loop, with the fog and a giant swan adding to the eerie atmosphere, leading them to believe they were trapped in a time loop.

Good evening and welcome to Monsters Among Us, the Tuesday edition. I'm your guide, Derek Hayes. Howdy folks and welcome back to another installment. I have yet another themed collection of calls to chill your core this evening.

Ten of them, in fact. And they all seem to describe the exact same thing. They call it a glitch in the Matrix, named after the 1999 film The Matrix and its subsequent sequels. That's what folks like tonight's callers refer to this phenomenon as. A glitch in time, space, possibly reality. And that brings us to tonight's first offering.

Proof that these odd little lapses in time or reality can happen anywhere, even while fishing. So please join me in welcoming Nick from Massachusetts to tonight's program. Hey Derek, this is Nick from Massachusetts. This in particular happened yesterday, January 14th. It's pretty quick. It's an odd occurrence, I guess is what you could call it.

So I usually go fishing every weekend. I'm an avid fisher person. I like to be outdoors most weekends. So yesterday I was out at a small pond and I was with a friend. We were just using bait to catch some stock trout. Nothing crazy, we were just sitting on the bank having a good time, just talking, seeing if we could catch a fish.

And we went to this specific spot on the pond where one side is developed and the other side is woods and it's adjacent to an interstate highway. And on the other side is the main road. So we were on the side where there's no houses, there's no docks, there's nothing of that sort going on. Everything's on the other side of the pond. So we were there for about, I don't know, two and a half hours and

You know, we were watching our poles, we were looking in the vicinity of all the areas in the lake, we were looking at the sunrise, you know, we were paying attention. And next thing we knew, we turned around and there was a dock, like a really nice, like put together dock. It wasn't anchored, it wasn't there when we got there because we would have saw it. It was a pretty big dock. It was a T-shaped dock and it was probably 10 or 12 feet long.

And like I said, we were just talking and I went to go turn around and tell him, "Oh, maybe we should go down to that bank." And there was literally a dock, like right behind us. And the way that the wind was blowing, it blew across the pond from where the other docks were. We would have clearly saw it. The wind was blowing in our face, so we would have saw the dock come right in front of us. There's no way we would have missed that. Like I said, I was with a friend, so he witnessed it.

just a really odd occurrence. I kind of chalked it up to like a glitch in the matrix. I don't know how else to explain it. Like I said, it was a really put together dock. It looked like it floated over there, but the way that the

But the wind was blowing and we saw everything where it was when we got to the spot. So we would have saw that dock there. And when we turned around, it was positioned in a way of like kind of accessible to us. Like it was almost a convenience to us. Like, oh, we can get on this dock and walk out a little further and cast our lines further. When we first saw it, we were flabbergasted. We were like, wait, no way. There's no way that dock was there the whole time. And we just overlooked it. It's right there. It's five feet away from where I was standing.

It was weird. I mean, I guess you could say we overlooked it, but I don't know. I'm a pretty observant person. My friend there, he's a pretty observant person. And we left after that because honestly, we kind of got a little weirded out because we tried to think of all the explanations of how that dock got there, but there was no logical explanation of how that dock just kind of showed up the way it did. Like it spawned like a video game. I caught a fish.

and fought the fish where the dock appeared about 20 minutes before the dock appeared. And if I was fighting that fish when the dock was there, I would have noticed that because it would have been an obstacle. It would have been something in my way that I didn't want the fish to get to. Or, you know, I would have noticed it is what I'm saying. So really weird occurrence. Like I said, I kind of chalked it up to a glitch in the matrix. Now this friend that witnessed it with me, we have had some weird things happen in the past together, things like that.

So we were a little like, you know, this is weird. You know, it happens every now and again. So I don't know. I'm happy my friend was there with me because if he wasn't, I would have thought I was crazy and I would never be talking about this. But since he was there to see it and I know I wasn't crazy, that's why I'm calling you now.

Thank you, Derek, and love the show. And I hopefully won't be calling back soon because I don't like when things like that happen. It kind of messes with my mind a little bit. I hope you have a good night, and I'll see you later. Thank you, Nick. Never look a gift dock in the mouth. Nah, you fish, that bad boy. And I hope you caught a couple of whoppers. Thanks to that dock's assistance, Nick. Now we live off of a lake up here in the mountains.

Well, I can see it out of a couple of our windows. Podcasting doesn't pay the kind of money that allows us to live close to the water. Not unless you're Joe Rogan or a Kelsey brother or something. But we still spend considerable amounts of time down around the lake, walking the path that surrounds it, fishing, kayaking, or just enjoying time with our friend at her very own dock.

The point is we're here for all the weather. And every time there's a big storm, wind, rain or snow, all sorts of stuff gets lost on the lake. Inflatable floaties, lily pads, boats big and small, and even docks from time to time. They come unsecured and simply just float away. But I don't know about them sneaking up on folks. I doubt that's something they're capable of doing.

Now we're going to hear all kinds of stories like this one here tonight. Some spooky, some unsettling, some kind of humorous, while others are downright fear-inducing. And as we go, we will be exploring a few different theories as to what causes this strange phenomena. But first, let's roll another one. Amy from California, welcome to the show.

Hi, my name is Amy. I'm calling from San Francisco, California, but this is in response to Season 15, Episode 23, and to Barry, who had a time slip. I also have time slip phenomenon happen to me on more than a regular occasion where my memories don't match up with the memories of the people that are around me. So I figured I would call in and just give a really simple thing that happened to me, and it's

Not in San Francisco, it's in Seattle. And I had picked up running because I wanted to get some more exercise and I thought it was a good thing to do. And I basically just go running out my front door. And I notice as I'm running, there is a white claw black cherry can on the ground and a recycling bin. I bend down and I pick it up and I put it in the recycling bin and I take off for my three-mile run.

which takes about 30 minutes. I turn back around, run back the way that I came, and I see another white claw, black cherry can, sitting in front of the same recycling bin that I had just put it into.

And I picked it up again, thinking that this was very odd, opened it up, recycling bin, and inside there was not another White Claw can. I don't know how to explain this. It seems very odd that within a span of less than 30 minutes, that that White Claw can, Black Cherry, was in that same spot.

I have a few other stories about time slips. I don't know, I think they call them the Mandela Effect. I will just have to call back because this is just sounding completely crazy. Not crazy at all, Amy. Unless all of tonight's callers are crazy. Now you know I'll touch a bit more on the Mandela Effect later on in the program. But for now, sure, it's just a white clock hand. What's the big deal?

Well, the big deal is that she already seemingly picked it up and threw it away. Yet somehow it had reset itself to its prior location. Almost like the can is programmed to be there. And if it's moved, it just responds back to its original point. Which would suggest we live in some sort of pre-programmed creation. Which brings us to the first theory as to why these odd glitches occur. Believe it or not, some say we exist in a simulated universe.

Now it's not only possible, but likely, that we are living in some extremely powerful computer program directed by an entity outside of our physical comprehension. In this situation, humans are not necessarily "real" intangible beings, but instead we're predetermined coded constructs of the digital world that we inhabit. In other words, imagine yourself as a character in the game The Sims.

you do not know you're a character in a video game. Now you might think that's crazy, but I promise you it's not. Even famous science nerd Neil deGrasse Tyson puts the odds at 50/50 that we're living in some sort of simulation. Now is that a terrifying notion to you? Or is it somehow a relief? I guess I kind of fall right down the middle between the two. A little freaked out, a little relieved. Either way, thank you again, Amy, for sharing your entry.

Now I think I know what many of you are thinking right now. A small beverage can reappeared. Maybe someone yanked it out of the trash to play a little prank or something. Maybe so. But how do you explain an entire house disappearing? Please welcome Aaron to tonight's program.

Hey Derek, this is Aaron Stewart. I live in Norton, Massachusetts currently, but this story takes place in 2008 in Kennesaw, Georgia. A buddy of mine had a birthday, so me and another friend were driving to his place to have a pool party, and...

And we knew the way. We'd been there a hundred times. And as we're going on our way, we pass under a brick bridge. Probably noon, sunny, so we could see everything. I don't really remember the brick bridge ever being there before, but I figured I just wasn't paying attention before.

So we're on our way, and we notice a couple weird things that, you know, because we're just driving along, and before it, I'd always ridden by myself. So my buddy, he's like, isn't that kind of weird that there's a Jehovah's Witness temple and a Mormon church right next to each other on this road? I was like, that is really odd.

And then we noticed that there was a house that was completely burned to the ground. I mean, it was demolished. And it was, you know, a noticeable sight. So we're driving along, and it's been probably five, ten minutes, which is way too long for the road we're on. Because at this point, we know...

from where his house was to my other friend's house was at most eight minutes with traffic. So we turn around, and on our way back, the house that was burned down was still standing. That was the first thing that was like, whoa, that's odd. Jehovah's Witness Temple and the Mormon church were still there, so that was normal. That was something we'd seen. But we noticed on the way backtracking...

There wasn't a brick overpass like an old train bridge. So we have no clue what that was. But we know... We were both there. We both saw it. We told everyone about it. No one knows where that brick bridge is. But a few weeks later, going back to that friend's house, I decided to go down that road again. Again, no brick bridge. But the house that had burned down...

was burned down this time. So it's almost like we had jumped through and then jumped back on that road. It's never happened again. My buddy still remembers it to this day anytime I bring it up, so we're really not sure what happened that day. But it was really weird. Been listening to the show for a while. Thought I'd share this story with you. Thanks, Aaron.

Now I just recently told this story so I won't do it again, but I have a disappearing building story of my own. A church in the backwoods of southeast Ohio. It was there one night and gone a few weeks later. Now it wasn't torn down. The road, the graveyard, everything was just gone. So in a strange way, I sort of know how you feel, Aaron. Not that I have any answers for you, but we do appreciate you taking the time

to call your entry in. Now folks, if you have a story you would like to share, give me a call at 888-608-NIGHT. That's 888-608-N-I-G-H-T. Now if you tried to submit a call recently and got an error, we have fixed the issue. The hotline is back and as good as ever.

A big thanks to NotKieferSutherland for giving us a heads up that it was broken. Now next up we work our way west, to the southwest specifically, where we hear from Robin. Go ahead with your entry, Robin.

Hi, Derek. This is Robin from Phoenix, Arizona again. I've called a few times and I thought I would call with a more recent experience. Although I'm not for sure how paranormal it is. It's definitely high strangeness. About six and a half years ago, me and my husband just had our second child and decided we wanted to get a bigger place.

We weren't looking to buy a home, but just a bigger place because at that point we had two kids. And we decided we were going to look at a townhome community that my husband had once lived in with his dad and his brothers.

So he knew that the place, the homes themselves are pretty big and the place is affordable. So we decided to go look and we get there and the person who's there to show home, she takes us, shows a home that's near the office. And we walk in, you first walk in, you kind of hit the kitchen. It's a quick left and there's the kitchen. You walk past the kitchen, there's a little dining area and then like the living room area.

And we get into this living room area and it just smells of mold, that musty moldy smell. And I'm looking at the carpet.

And I'm like, man, they must have washed the carpet with dirty water or something because this smell is bad. And we look at the rest of the home and then we part ways. Me and my husband are driving home and we're talking about if we want to live there. And I'm like, yeah, I love the space and I love the prize. But if we do get it, we're going to have to rewash that carpet. It smelled so bad.

And my husband asked me the carpet in which room. I said, in the living room. That carpet smelled so bad. And he goes, Robin, there was no carpet in the living room. And I just kind of laughed. I'm like, what are you talking about? There's no carpet in the living room. You're being ridiculous. I walked on the carpet and it smelled bad. I looked right at it.

And he says, no, there was no carpet in the living room. Now I'm getting irritated at him. We can call the management office and ask them if there's carpet in the living room if you want to. How can you tell me there's no carpet in the living room?

It's a little bit of a back and forth. He's standing his ground. I'm standing my ground. And he tells me at one point during our little tiff that they used to have carpet in the home, but had taken all the carpet out and had upgraded to like linoleum.

And the way that this townhome community worked was that every time you signed your lease, you got to upgrade some part of your home, something that they were doing to their open and available apartment, something new that they were doing. You could get it done in your home if you, whenever you renewed your lease. And that was one of the options he remembered that they were doing was that they were pulling the carpet in the living room and laying this linoleum.

So he said that maybe some of the older homes have carpet, but that one definitely didn't have carpet. And so I'm like, whatever. We ended up deciding we were going to get this home. I'm like, you'll see when we move in, it has carpet. So it's a couple of weeks before we move in. You know, we had to end our lease at the other place, pack, whatever. We move in and there's no carpet.

I don't know what else to say. There was no carpet. And now I'm like, what the heck happened? And I told my mom this story and she looks at me and she goes, Robin, where did you go? Maybe I walked into a different timeline. I don't know. But the woman who was showing us the home was to my right. My husband was to my left.

I saw the carpet. Nobody else saw the carpet. And then that first night there, I'm taking a shower and I hear very clear and audibly a man say, hello. And so I stop and I go, hello.

And nobody says anything back. So I holler outside of the shower for my husband. He hollers back at me. I could tell he's in the bedroom, but he's not very close to the bathroom. I ask if he's trying to talk to me. He says no. But this voice was very clear, like that man was in the bathroom with me and there wasn't anybody in the bathroom with me. It was just me. So what I wanted to add was that's all the weird stuff that happened in that apartment.

We lived in that town home for about four years, and I don't recall anything weird happening after that. It was just, I walked in and saw carpet where there wasn't carpet, and then I heard a man say hello the first day that we were there.

Nothing happened after that. So it wasn't a haunted apartment. Maybe I walked into some weird timeline, recent past timeline. I don't know. Anyways, that's my story. I love sharing my story. So thank you for giving me this outlet to do that. Have a great day. Bye. Thank you, Robin. And we've all made this mistake, right? We were certain we'd remembered something correctly, only to have gotten it wrong all along.

According to my wife, it happens to me all the time. But is that what occurred with Robin here? A bad memory? Well, that may be the case. But this story also reminds me of a symptom of these glitch-in-the-matrix stories. They call it the Mandela Effect. And the term was coined by a paranormal researcher named Fiona Broome.

who reported having vivid and detailed memories of news coverage of South African anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela dying in prison back in the 1980s despite the fact that Mandela actually died in 2013 decades after his release and after serving as president of South Africa and you know this sort of thing pops up all the time here are a few examples of the Mandela effect in action

Some folks misremember that C-3PO from the Star Wars trilogies is completely golden. Which is not true. One of his legs are silver, I believe. Or thinking that Jiffy is the name of a well-known peanut butter brand. I believe it's just Jif. No why. Or misremembering the family name of the bears from the Berenstain Bears book and cartoon collection. It was actually Berenstein. Or believing that Mr. Monopoly has a monocle.

Well, he certainly does not. Or maybe you thought that Mickey Mouse wore a pair of suspenders. Nope, he sure don't. Or misremembering that Darth Vader says, "Luke, I am your father." In Star Wars Episode V: Empire Strikes Back. Any big fan of the series knows that the line is, "No, I am your father." And these are just a few examples. There are literally hundreds of them out there.

I'm a little proud of myself because not one of these managed to trip me up. So maybe I live in a different reality than the rest of you. Although I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing. Now folks, don't forget to check out our merchandise shop, especially if you're shopping for the holiday season. MonstersAmongUsPodcast.com and click that shop tab. Now next up, we work our way west to the southwest specifically, where we hear from Robin.

Go ahead with your entry, Robin. Hi, my name is Robin. I live in Northern California. I just found your podcast a couple of weeks ago. And let me just say, my husband's a firefighter. I've been sleeping alone on and off pretty regularly for many, many years when he's gone. And I've never been scared at night. Now I have to be careful about how much of the podcast I listen to because I've lost multiple nights of sleep over it. So anyway, you're doing a good job keeping it busy. But...

Like I said, I just started listening. I'm not sure if you ever do like glitch in the matrix. That's the only word I have for it type of things. But I am absolutely plagued by these things. I could tell a hundred stories right now. It happens to me so often. That's the only way I can explain it by calling it a glitch in the matrix.

This seems silly, but if you really think about it, this one to me is really, really weird. But maybe it's just me. We lived in a really small bedroom community for a long time. Um,

Not many people at all. One day I was getting gas at the gas station and I don't know if you know what a Subaru Baja is, but they're very kind of rare Subaru car and you almost never see them. And I look over and right by me passing each other were two Subaru Bajas, both the exact same color, both beat up and old and

Thank you, Robin.

Now I've linked to an image of the Subaru Baja, because I bet you've never seen one before either. Like Robin said, they're awfully rare. But are they rare enough that it would be paranormal or even supernatural? That two would be in the same parking lot at the same time? I don't know about that.

Maybe two friends decided to each buy one of these vehicles and have them imported. Maybe they were picture cars driving off to a movie set somewhere. Although truth be told, we typically ship those on large trucks. Or maybe that vehicle is just popular in that part of the country and many people have managed to get their hands on one. I don't know, your guess is as good as mine here. But thank you either way, Robin, for sharing your entry.

Now, not all of these glitch stories are unexplainable. Take Raven's entry. Here, for example.

Hi there, Derek. This is Raven calling again with another story that is based around transportation and glitches in the Matrix.

This is probably the most obvious and larger scale glitches in the matrix that I've experienced out of all of my smaller ones that I've seen. I was driving in a car with my teenage sister and her friends. I wasn't driving. I was sitting in the back seat with two other girls, and it was just a car full of teen girls just playing music loudly and having a good time. It was in the afternoon in...

West Sacramento. We might have been close to Davis as well. We were on the freeway going around a bend and I'm looking out the window and one of my sister's friends sees something outside and is like, hey, do you guys see that airplane? So in Sacramento, there's an airport, the airport, the Sacramento airport. So we're used to seeing airplanes pretty close to the ground. But something about this plane was off.

So all of us, except for our driver, was looking out the window watching this plane. And it was pretty close to the freeway, pretty close to the ground. And as we're driving on the freeway, we're kind of going around this thing. But it looked like the plane was stagnant in midair. And planes go pretty dang fast. So that is not a normal thing.

All of us saw this too. Everyone or most of us in the car were experiencing this. At least the three of us in the back seat were watching this unfold outside. And I think it was about 30 seconds to maybe a minute of us watching this plane just floating there. And it wasn't a balloon or an advertisement or anything of that sort because it was a big balloon.

airplane. Yeah, it was pretty strange. We were all so shocked. None of us thought to grab our phones to try and film it. And by the time we wanted to, we had already passed it. So yeah, I hope you can share the story or find it interesting. And I'm curious to hear if other people have seen things like this. I love your podcast. I've been listening to it a lot more recently and I really love it. So yeah, thanks.

Thank you, Raven. Now what you've experienced is called the parallax effect. It's a visual illusion that occurs when a person is moving at a different speed or direction than an airplane or a moving object in the sky. Now this makes the plane appear to be frozen in the air, even though it's still moving forward, likely at a pretty fast clip.

Now I've received tons and tons of calls just like Raven's. And historically I haven't played any of them because, well, this is an explainable phenomena. But I figured I'd play Raven's Call as just a little reminder of this strange effect. And I left a link in the show notes if you'd like to see what this phenomena looks like on video. I will admit it's pretty freaky. And you know I finally got to experience it myself a few years back while driving along the 10 freeway.

right next to the Ontario Airport here in the Inland Empire. If you're local to the area, keep an eye out next time you drive through there. But even though this is explainable, we do appreciate you taking the time to share your call with us, Raven. And I hope I was able to ease your mind just a bit. Now, not all of these calls can be spooky or unnerving. Maggie's call out of Canada is almost downright comical.

Please welcome her to tonight's program. Hi, my name is Maggie and I live in St. John, Newfoundland, Canada. So my story is a little bit of a, I guess, glitch in the matrix kind of thing. Only it was pretty comical the way it played out. So I have a little girl who at the time was two and a bit.

and it was early morning and we were getting ready for daycare. And on this morning, it was a regular fall morning, nothing changed about the day, and we were just getting ready. I was up in her bedroom and we picked out her clothes together

and they picked out a stripy black pair of underwear. I had to go out to my room because we never had an ear drawer. So I went out to the laundry basket, picked them up, brought them out, laid them on the bed.

And because she was so little, at the time I stayed with her and we fully got dressed and I helped her get everything on, her underwear on, her pants on and her shirt on. So she had stayed with me the whole morning. We had already done the washroom. There was no time she was out of my sight. And we went downstairs, had breakfast. She was next to me. Then we left the breakfast table, went and got our coat on and...

just at the doorway when we went to go put her coat on her pants they looked really loose and I was like why are your pants loose and we moved them and looked and her underwear was missing which we had put on

In the room, she had not left my sight. She had stayed with me the whole time, not gone to the washroom, not done anything. And the pair of underwear were disappeared. I asked her, I said, where did your underwear go? And she looked just as surprised as me. And she was like, they're gone. So I went back upstairs and the underwear was on her bed where I had originally put it.

So I went to get them and to get her a pair of underwear again. She refused to put them on because she called them the disappearing underwear. So we had to get a new pair of underwear and put them on, take off her clothes and get dressed. And that was fine. We went on with the day. She went to school. I was telling her daycare teachers about this very strange incident. And she was going on telling her friends about how her underwear just disappeared off her body. But her clothes stayed on.

So the strange thing about this is that evening I went home and I was folding clothes. I only ever had one pair of these black stripy underwear. And when I went out to my laundry basket where I had originally got them in the first place,

There was another pair of the exact same underwear. So now there are two pairs of that same underwear in my house. I don't have any other way to explain it other than as rich as the Matrix. It's kind of comical. I know it's kids' underwear. But yeah, I don't have any way to explain it. I thought I would share it. It's always put out as a very odd thing.

memory. My daughter still talks about it and how they just disappeared and she still calls them disappearing underwear and we have no idea how that happened and no idea how two pairs of that exact same underwear now exist in our house. Thanks so much. Love the show. Bye. Thank you, Maggie. Now, you know, I've had about a hundred socks disappear in my lifetime, but not a single pair of underwear and certainly not while I was wearing them either.

And as funny as this story might be, it's yet another reminder of these strange occurrences that we can't seem to explain. And when I come back, I'll share with you even more scary stories of glitches in the Matrix. Don't go anywhere.

Now, let's get back into the action with another glitch, if you will. Jennifer from Utah. Welcome to the show. Hi. First time calling in. My name is Jennifer. I currently live in Salt Lake City, but this story took place when I was living in Colorado Springs, Colorado about seven years ago.

My husband was a truck driver who worked long hours, but he was home every day. So I made sure to keep his schedule. Like I woke up when he woke up, we went to bed together to get to spend the most amount of time together. He usually woke up about 2.30. I made his lunch, he got ready to go to work, and then he was usually out of the house by 3 a.m.

And this was one of those days. So once he left, I would sit on the couch with our two dogs, a black dog and a red dog, for simplicity purposes. And I would work on my computer.

Maybe about 3:30 on this morning, the dogs indicated they needed to go outside. The sliding glass door to the backyard was in the same family living room where I was working on my computer.

So I let them out, closed the door, locked it, a familiar ritual that I was pretty stern about, especially when it's dark outside, when my husband's not home, the doors were always locked.

I'm going to go into minute details just for about 30 seconds. Hopefully you'll understand why. Closed the door, locked the door, walked into the kitchen, refilled my coffee, walked back into the living room, sat down on the couch, and my arm was nestled.

So hard that the coffee spilled out of the cup. I gave a little yelp, obviously startled, and looked over to see that the dogs were inside. The black dog was laying curled up in a ball in the sleep on the couch, and the red dog was on the couch next to me.

with his tail wagging in anticipation for the cuddles he was about to receive. It was his usual move to nudge my arm with his nose to get my attention.

I don't know what happened. A glitch in the matrix, perhaps? I got up. First, I checked the coffee to make sure, like, some weird time lapse hadn't occurred without me knowing it. The coffee was still hot, still actually dripping on my hand. The sliding glass door was still closed, still locked. And to this day, I don't know what happened. To me, it just seemed, again, like a glitch in the matrix, but I really don't know.

Other people have suggested maybe I just fell asleep somehow. I don't see how that's possible in the time that all these different events occurred, but somehow the dogs were outside until all of a sudden they weren't. Anyway, thank you for listening, and I really enjoy your show. Thank you. Thanks, Jennifer. That is a wild one. And it's too bad you didn't have any security cameras rolling to catch either version of that night's activities.

Although I have a sneaking suspicion that it wouldn't have mattered either way. I don't think a single camera angle would have solved anything in this case. But this does somewhat remind me of another theory floated around to explain these odd occurrences. They call it "déjà vu", the feeling that one has lived through the present situation before.

It's an illusion of memory whereby, despite a strong sense of recollection, the time, place, and context of the previous experience are uncertain or even impossible. There's not really any scientific explanation for this phenomenon, but when polled, two-thirds said they'd experienced it before, and I myself have many, many times. But not lately, though, now that I think of it. And there might be a reason for that.

According to an article by the BBC, experiencing deja vu kicks off around the age of five years old, and it increases until one's mid-twenties, then begins to taper off into adulthood. And unfortunately, I am well outside of that age bracket. None of these calls sound like deja vu to me, especially not Hannah's call out of the state of Maine.

Hi, Derek. My name's Hannah. I live in South Portland, Maine. And I think I had something like you would

you would consider a time glitch. I am not exactly sure how to categorize it, but I was hoping maybe you could help me figure it out. So I'm a vet assistant with a mobile clinic, and we usually drive to about three different locations a day in a work van. And it was a day when it was just me and one other coworker, and...

We have one route that is way far, far up in northern Maine. The first location being Holton and the second being Millinocket. Holton is pretty close to Canada. It's about as far north in Maine as you can get.

It was beginning of September of this year. It was around 4.30 p.m.ish, and it was clear outside. It was chilly, you know. And so my coworker and I were coming home from Millinocket, and we were around the Waterville, Maine area.

So she asked me if I could pull off to get her some kind of caffeine at a Dunkin' Donuts. She wanted to caffeinate because she had an exam later in the day. And so I pulled off at exit 127. It should be worth mentioning probably that we use an iPad as a GPS. They give us a specific one with our company. So the iPad GPS, you know, had our route getting back to our home office.

So I took exit 127 into Waterville, Maine, Dunkin' Donuts. And while in the drive-thru, she texted her girlfriend. I responded to a few texts from my partner. We both were cognizant that we had sent them. So then the GPS had us rerouted to get back on I-95 South.

which is the direction of our office. And the GPS said there was one hour and 22 minutes left till we got home. So we get back off onto I-95 South and we're both aware of the signs, you know, that are always on the side of the road that say, you know, the interstate you're on, which was I-95 South. And we were just kind of chatting casually, not about anything in particular. And

And of course the GPS time was going down and when it was at 58 minutes until our arrival time, I felt almost like this chill or like a wave, I guess. And it felt like I was looking through sunglasses suddenly, like everything was darker and grayer and it was almost like a jolt as well. And

I didn't say anything, but right as I felt that, my coworker went, you know, what the hell, out loud. And we both looked up and the sign said I-95 North suddenly, and we had been going on I-95 South. And the GPS had jumped back up to one hour and 22 minutes.

And we were two exits before exit 127 on I-95 North. So even if I had gotten off, you know, at the opposite exit and we had been driving on I-95 North that entire time, we would have been a half an hour behind.

back in the opposite direction, not right before exit 127. And the GPS had jumped back up in time to about exactly actually half an hour to our trip. And we both checked our phones to see the text messages that we had sent our partners and both were gone.

So, at this point, we pull over at exit 127, where we had been half an hour ago, to kind of rehash the fact, you know, she wrote everything down. We were both here for that right moment. You know, we both acknowledged that, yes, we had seen the signs going I-95 south, and the GPS was going down in time, and...

Then suddenly we were back to our original spot half an hour earlier. And the weirdest part, I think, is that when we got home and checked with each of our partners, they hadn't received the text that we had both sent during that time either. So, yeah, we've since kind of...

talked about it and she seems more and more skeptical as time goes on and she's a lot more of a realist than I am. I grew up in a house that was built in 1802 and there were a lot of kind of more ghost related paranormal activities and

I've never had anything like that, though. And I've never had anything happen like that. And certainly not with anyone else present. So we were both pretty freaked out. We lost half an hour of time. And I guess I wanted to know if you knew of any other stories of people being cosmically rerouted or anything like that. I guess that's it.

Thank you for your podcast. I have found so many of the stories so relatable and your voice is very soothing to me and I really, really enjoy what you're doing. Thank you. I think it's helped a lot of people. Ooh, that's honestly upsetting, Hannah. Because we all hate to be stuck somewhere. The airport and traffic or some stupid meeting. Now imagine you're stuck somewhere, but because you cannot physically leave. Trapped in an endless loop.

Once you've reached a certain point, it spits you back out. Essentially, right back where you began. It's all very Groundhog Day-esque. And this isn't the only call like this that I have for you here this evening. Where someone is traveling down a long, lonely highway and suddenly finds themselves reset. But first, another word from tonight's sponsors.

You got a bunch of two losses.

Now as if Hannah's story wasn't discomforting enough, wait until you get a load of Alonzo's.

out of the bluegrass state of Kentucky. Hey, Derek. My name's Alonzo. I'm from northern Kentucky right now. I got a time slip story for you that took place when I was stationed in England.

This happened back in 2008 time frame. I was in the Air Force. I was stationed in a small base about an hour north of London in England. I had a weekend. Me and my buddy were bored. Trying to figure out something to do, something spooky to go find a haunted house or something, you know. We came across a place called Wiccan Fin. They had ghost orbs and ghost lights, something kind of spooky. And it wasn't that far from us. So...

Me and my buddy jumped in my old busted up car and we made the quick trip, like 20 minutes, real easy drive, two turns down to this town called Lickenfin. So we get there, it's pretty late, it's getting dark, I'd say it's probably close around 8 o'clock. It's a clear night, town kind of spooky, really quiet, no people out.

And so we pull into this nature preserve and that's where they see these ghost lights and ghost doors and whatnot. I pull into the parking lot and in front of us is the preserve where they see the ghost lights and it is beyond dark. It's inky black through this beyond the parking lot. It's bizarre. It's almost like my headlights didn't penetrate, go further than the parking lot.

So I look at my buddy, he's like, all right, we're getting pumped up, let's go out there, let's find some ghost lights. And so we open the doors, get out of the car, standing in the parking lot, continuing to look into this impossibly dark space, and neither of us can move. Frozen stiff, just staring forward. This...

horrible wave of fear and anguish and nervousness and don't be here just came over me. And all of a sudden, I just felt unsafe. There was not a good place to be. So after a couple minutes of trying to pump ourselves up to go do some exploration, we decide not to. The feeling of just panic and fear just is too much. We're like, all right, never mind, we're done. So we jump back in the car, feel a little more relieved.

that we're leaving space and I look over and my buddy is really hunched over with tears in his eyes. I'm like, what is the matter with you? What's going on? And he said that he has this intense pain on his shoulders and something's pressing down on him. And he's asking me, what's on my back? Get it off. And I'm saying nothing, nothing's there and I'm waving my hand over his back to prove there's nothing there.

I don't know if he's having a panic attack or something. He's like, let's just leave. I'm like, all right, I'm ready to go. So we slow the car in reverse, leave the parking lot, get the place behind us, flowing a little bit better. We're in back into that town, Flickin'.

and I'm looking for the exit to leave. I see my turn, I make it, and we're on the road. Now it's probably closer to 9, 9:30, really foggy 'cause it's England, right? And we're just driving along. He's still kind of in the middle, maybe a panic attack, kind of freaking out, I am too, kind of really hyped up, like what was that? What was that feeling? Why was it so dark and foreboding? Like what was that?

So we're driving along and I'm looking for my turn to get back on the interstate. And I never see it. We just keep going straight and straight and I'm not making no turns. It's very simple. There's almost two lefts to get back on the interstate. I never see a turn. So I'm looking forward and next thing I know, we pull back into the town of Wiccan. And I was like, what? And I look over at my buddy and he said, you must have drove in circles. I'm like, no I didn't. I went straight.

So, okay, never mind. I'm new here, right? So maybe I did make the wrong turn. So I find the correct exit again, and I take it. We're back on the same road. One lane road, super foggy, dark, much by ourselves, not another car, not another person, nothing. And again, I'm driving straight. Nothing. Getting nervous now. Getting a little panicked. I'm warming up lost out here in the boondocks of England.

And I'm driving along and again, I show up back in the town of Waken. We have a quick look at each other, me and my buddy, and he's like, "We need to leave now. "Just get out of this place, we're stuck here." So again, I see the same exit. I take it and then we're back on this one lane road or two lanes, east and west, I'm guessing. And it's super foggy and I'm driving the same path, going straight, looking for my turn.

It's getting super, super foggy. The headlights can barely see ahead of us. And I see a figure ahead of us. It's white figures materializing in the middle of the road in front of our vehicle. And I'm slowing down because I don't want to hit nothing. And we realize it's this gigantic swan standing in the middle of the road.

And it's just staring at the car. It doesn't get out of the way. So I roll to a stop and it's four feet in front of us. And we're just staring at the swan. The swan's staring at us. I'm looking at my buddy. He's like, what is happening? The swan, I felt like, was pissed. It was saying, I felt like, why are you here? You're lost. You need to get out of here.

It made one honking sound, walked off. As soon as the swan left, I looked forward, found the exit I needed to go on, and it's like the darkness lifted, the fog lifted. I was back on the interstate, and we were heading back towards base. I went back and looked on Google Maps, trying to see, like, how did I get so turned around? It's literally...

A simple, you know, two left turns back on the interstate, back home. There's no way I could understand how I got lost so easily. I guess it's a possibility, but I feel like we were in some kind of time loop or a physical loop where we couldn't leave that town. It was insane. My buddy ended up going back to that space months later, said that it was completely different, had a completely different feel that whatever that nightly experience was, we couldn't create again. I don't know.

Thank you, Alonzo. Again, how terrifying would it be to find yourself trapped like that? Stuck in some sort of repeating loop. Talk about feeling trapped. And you know, what's the deal with all those feelings of dread?

And why couldn't Alonso and his friend find the exit that seemed so obvious on the map? Why were they stuck there? And what was on the buddy's back? Some sort of unseen force, I assume. And the fog. Was the fog connected? And of course, we have to mention the gigantic swan. What the hell was he doing there? Now, per usual, I have no answers here, but I am open to suggestions.
