The Mothman sightings peaked during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays of 1967. The Silver Bridge collapsed on December 15, 1967, killing 46 people, and many linked the tragedy to the Mothman sightings, believing it to be an omen of doom.
The Silver Bridge collapsed due to poor maintenance and carrying more weight than it was designed for. The tragedy resulted in 46 deaths and led to increased inspections of old bridges.
Kenneth Duncan, one of five gravediggers, was the first official witness to the Mothman in November 1966. He described the creature as having wings and gliding through the trees.
The most famous sighting involved two couples, Linda and Roger Scarberry and Stephen and Mary Millett, who saw the Mothman near the abandoned North Power Plant. The creature chased their car, flying alongside it and leaving scratch marks on the vehicle.
Many residents believed the Mothman sightings were a premonition of the Silver Bridge collapse. Some even thought the Mothman caused the disaster, leading to the legend that it was an omen of doom.
Charles Lawson murdered his wife and six of his seven children on Christmas Day 1929. He shot them and placed their bodies carefully, resting their heads on rocks. He later shot himself.
Charles Lawson's motive remains unclear, but family members suspected he had an incestuous relationship with his oldest daughter, Marie, who was reportedly pregnant with his child.
Bruce Jeffrey Pardo was a software engineer who, after being fired and going through a divorce, dressed as Santa and killed nine people at his ex-wife's family home on Christmas Eve 2008. He used a homemade flamethrower and later committed suicide.
Bruce Pardo's motive was likely fueled by financial stress, his firing from his job, and the emotional turmoil of his divorce. He sought revenge on his ex-wife's family during their Christmas celebration.
Christy Bamu, a 15-year-old boy, was tortured and killed by his older sister Magali Bamu and her boyfriend Eric Bakubi, who accused him of witchcraft. Christy suffered over 200 injuries, including broken teeth and a torn ear, before drowning in a bathtub.
Magali Bamu and Eric Bakubi believed Christy had brought witchcraft into their home. Bakubi, who suffered from brain damage, subjected Christy to brutal torture, while Magali did nothing to stop it.
The Mistletoe Bride is a ghost story about a bride who disappeared during a game of hide-and-seek on her wedding day. Fifty years later, her remains were found in an oak chest in the attic, still in her wedding dress. She is now known as the White Lady haunting Bramshill House.
The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall is believed to be Dorothy Walpole, the wife of Charles Townshend. After being locked in her room for an affair, she died of smallpox in 1726. Her ghost, wearing a brown dress, is said to haunt the hall, especially during Christmas.
Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII, is said to haunt Hever Castle, her childhood home, during Christmas. She is often seen under a large oak tree where she and Henry VIII spent time courting.
