In this episode, the THRU-r community (once again) welcomes Ned Tibbits - a PCT and JMT thru-hiker as well as a Wilderness Skills Instructor (among many other things). Ned has hiked, taught, and conducted rescue efforts in the Sierra section of the PCT for many years, and he is a great resource for information on snow travel and safety. Here, we include the recording from our interactive Zoom meetup to help hikers prepare for the upcoming season.
During this meetup, Ned gave us his best tips and tricks for over-snow navigation including safe passage, how to follow a buried trail under snow, where to walk, and more. Ned specifically focuses on locations in the Sierra range (great for NOBO PCT hikers). However, this is a great listen even if you aren't hiking NOBO on the PCT but have snow travel planned in your future, or if you're an early season JMT hiker.
Ned has founded a non-profit organization which promotes wilderness safety called Mountain Education). If you feel like this information added value to your hiking preparation, consider donating to thank him for his time and knowledge. You can donate here).
