Ultrasound: A medical test that uses sound waves to create pictures of the baby inside the womb. "They saw their baby for the first time on the ultrasound."
Baby shower: A party to celebrate the upcoming birth of a baby. "They had a baby shower to prepare for the baby's arrival."
Due date: The estimated day when the baby is expected to be born. "Her due date is in early July."
Obstetrician: A doctor who specializes in pregnancy and childbirth. "The obstetrician checked the health of both mother and baby."
Prenatal care: Medical care given to a woman during her pregnancy. "She attended prenatal care appointments regularly."
Maternity ward: A hospital section specialized for childbirth and care of newborns. "She was taken to the maternity ward when her labor started."
Contractions: The pains a mother has while she is in labor. "Her contractions started, signaling the beginning of labor."
Kicks: Movements of the baby felt inside the womb. "She felt the baby kick the inside of her belly."
Epidural: Medicine given to a woman to stop the pain during labor “She chose to have an epidural to ease the pain of labor."
Cesarean section: A surgical method to deliver a baby through the mother's belly. "The baby was born by c-section due to problems with the birth."
Midwife: A healthcare professional who assists in childbirth.
In labor: The period when a woman is experiencing contractions to deliver a baby. "She was in labor for several hours before the baby was born."
Delivery: The act of giving birth to a baby. "The delivery went smoothly, and the baby was healthy."
Newborn: A baby that has just been born. "The newborn slept peacefully in her mother's arms."
