Last Thursday, Pita Limjaroenrat, the leader of the Move Forward party that emerged as the biggest winner in Thailand’s general election in May, failed in his first bid to be the nation’s next prime minister.
Under his leadership, the Move Forward party has become the largest party in the House of Representatives. His alliance of eight parties controls 312 seats in the 500-member House of Representatives. However, he needs the support of the Upper House Senate to reach the minimum 375 combined Parliament votes to secure premiership.
Pita will attempt a second time to become Thailand’s prime minister this week. Will the reformist leader succeed? What is the future of Thailand's reform movement? In this episode of Global Heartbeat podcast, Lianhe Zaobao’s Second Foreign Editor (Southeast Asia) Ng Hon Kuan shares his perspectives.
