Declared 'People's Republic' in Donetsk
UKRAINE – Pro-Russian protesters who seized control of the Donetsk regional government building are reported to have declared the establishment of a 'People's Republic' in the same city. There were also demonstrators who seized security complexes in the same city as well as in Luhansk and after incidents, on Sunday, where a crowd of pro-Moscow elements entered a government building in Kharkiv, before withdrawing from the my surroundings
Videos that are circulating on the Internet, show a man declaring 'the sovereign State of the Republic of Donetsk', with the current President of Ukraine, Oleksandr Turchynov, meaning this unrest as an attempt by Russia 'to divide Ukraine into separate entities'.
Meanwhile, the rebels in Donetsk, which is one of the main Ukrainian cities, are insisting on a referendum that they hope will lead to the formation of a new republic in a land that still forms an integral part of Ukraine. The rebels want the referendum to be held no later than May 11, and with the Ukrainian authorities blaming Russia for 'this campaign of consistent unrest which is part of a specific agenda'.
Turchynov insisted that the developments in Donetsk indicate a 'second phase' of the Russians' commitment to destabilize Ukraine and after the Government of the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, annexed the Crimean peninsula to his land after a referendum that did not seem valid in the eyes of the new authorities in Kiev.
At the same time, the case of Donetsk is very different from that of Crimea, because most of the local residents converse in Ukrainian, despite the presence (in the city) of a Russian-speaking majority. It is also true that opinion polls in Donetsk are showing considerable support for a united Ukraine.
For his part, Ukrainian President Turchynov convened his Cabinet urgently where he said that 'they should not allow foreign troops to cross the border and seize Ukrainian lands. Turchynov emphasized that the aggressors who are fueling the unrest have 'distinctive Russian accents', with Ukrainian police blocking the roads leading to Luhansk, while reserve forces are sent to their country's troubled cities.
Other reports, yesterday, said that armed men even tried to besiege a television complex in Donetsk, where they were stopped by police squads. This while the Ukrainian Ministry for Foreign Affairs said Ukraine is ready to go to war with Russia in case Moscow sends the military to the eastern Ukrainian territories.
