Threads is rolling out a new feature on the platform, its own take on Blue Sky Starter Packs, which are curated lists of suggested accounts that help new users find people to follow. In a post on Threads, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the platform is testing a way for you to find and easily follow collections of profiles that post about popular topics on Threads. The suggested collection of profiles will be shown to new users when they sign up for Threads, and they will also be displayed within the app's For You feed.
With the release of iOS 18.2, United Airlines has announced that it has integrated Apple's new Share Item Location feature into the United Airlines mobile app. This integration will allow passengers who find themselves at their destination without their luggage to file a delayed baggage report through United's app along with a Share Item Location link that potentially will expedite a reunion.
Apple says that Air Canada has also integrated the feature, and in the coming months, more than 15 airlines will begin accepting find-my-item locations as part of their customer service process for locating mishandled or delayed baggage.
YouTube TV started notifying customers yesterday that a 14% base plan price hike from $72.99 to $83.99 will go into effect starting January 15th. The increase is immediate for new users, while those on existing trials or promotional rates will not be affected. YouTube says the reason for the increase is due to the rising cost of content. The price of YouTube TV has more than doubled in just over five years, from $40 a month as of March of 2018 to $83 a month currently.
WhatsApp, the world's most popular messaging platform, has added a few new video calling features just before the holidays, including better resolution, a revamped call tab on the desktop, and the ability to select specific participants of a group for group calls. WhatsApp allows up to 32 participants in its video calls, but there may be times when you don't want to ring every member of a group. The new option allows call initiators to specifically select participants when placing calls without making you have to create a new group.
According to a letter from Elon Musk's lawyer, which has been posted to X, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is preparing numerous counts against Elon Musk, including a reopened investigation into Neuralink. Attorney Alex Spiro also says that the commission issued a settlement demand that required Musk to agree within 48 hours to either accept a monetary payment or face charges on numerous accounts. It's unclear from Spiro's letter whether the charges the SEC is pursuing have to do with Twitter, now X, or something else.
Bloomberg reports that Apple will begin producing its AirPods wireless earphones in India for the first time earlier next year, marking a milestone in the iPhone maker's steady push to diversify beyond China. AirPods will become only the second major Apple device to be assembled in India after the iPhone. A unit supplier of Foxconn Technology Group will start the assembly of AirPods at the new factory near Hyderabad around the first quarter of next year.
A European Commission ad campaign intended to sway opinion around a controversial EU legislative proposal to force messaging apps to scan people's communications for CSAM was confirmed Friday to actually breach the EU's own data protection rules. The finding by the EU's oversight body, the European Data Protection Supervisor, found that the micro-targeted ad campaign that the Commission ran on X back in the fall of 2023 processed the sensitive data, political views, of citizens to target the ads.
Google is rolling out a new feature to Notebook LM's podcast-like audio overviews, the ability to actually talk with the host of the overviews. This new feature is experimental and will only work with new overviews, but it seems like a potentially useful way to learn more about what you've collected in the app.
Google warns that hosts may pause awkwardly before responding or occasionally introduce inaccuracies, so it may not be a totally polished experience to start. Google is also announcing a Notebook LLM subscription, giving users five times more audio overviews, notebooks, and sources per notebook.
And finally, Astro Bot claimed the coveted Game of the Year title at the Game Awards, the gaming industry's biggest award ceremony. The charming PlayStation platformer outshined heavy hitters like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Elden Ring, Shadow of the Erd Tree. Team Asabi's creation also took home awards for Best Family Game, Best Action Adventure, and Best Game Direction.
