Meta is mistakenly moderating too much, according to Nick Clegg, Meta's president of global affairs, who says the company's moderation error rates are, quote, too high, which gets in the way of free expression that we set out to enable, end quote. Clegg says too often harmless content gets taken down or restricted and too many people get penalized unfairly. Meta has pledged to, quote, improve the precision and accuracy with which we act on our rules, end quote.
Threads is set to receive a significant search update in the coming weeks, enhancing its search capabilities with new filtering options. This update allows users to refine their searches by specific profiles and date ranges, going beyond the current basic keyword search for trending topics, posts, or accounts. The updated search bar will feature a settings icon that, when tapped, reveals options for after date, before date, and from profile.
This added functionality brings threads closer to the advanced search features offered by platforms like X and Blue Sky, providing users with greater control and precision in their searches. China has responded to the U.S.'s recent ship export restrictions by imposing a ban on shipments of several key minerals and metals to the U.S. These materials, including gallium, germanium, antimony, and superhard materials, are essential components in semiconductor manufacturing and military applications.
China's commerce ministry also announced stricter controls on graphite-related exports. This move underscores the Chinese government's willingness to retaliate against U.S. economic measures, signaling a potential escalation in the ongoing tech war between the two tech superpowers.
A new feature coming to Chrome uses AI to quickly check trustworthiness of a website by providing a summary of reviews from independent websites about the store or website you're visiting. Ex-user Leon noticed the new AI-powered feature called Stored Reviews, which provides a quick summary of reviews from trusted independent review platforms like Trustpilot, ScamAdvisor, and others.
Summary is shown in the page info bubble, which appears when you click on the lock icon or the eye icon in the address bar. If you click it, you'll see a brief AI-generated summary of the website's reputation based on reviews from multiple sources.
Meta says that generative AI had a muted impact on global elections this year, despite widespread concerns that AI could impact meta platforms. Coordinated networks of accounts seeking to spread propaganda or false content largely failed to build a significant audience on Facebook and Instagram or use AI effectively, according to Nick Clegg, Meta's president of global affairs. The volume of AI-generated misinformation was low, and Meta was able to quickly label or remove the content, he said.
With Tesla's holiday update this year comes an Apple Watch app that includes native phone key access, which will allow you to unlock or start your Tesla from an Apple Watch. The native Apple Watch experience will let you view the charge status, pop the frunk, and remotely warm up your car. Additionally, the holiday update includes sentry mode security video access from your phone, reverse cross-traffic alert safety add-in, a Santa mode for Cybertruck, and more.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, or CFPB, is proposing a new rule that will limit data brokers' ability to sell American-sensitive personal and financial information like Social Security numbers. The proposed rule would consider data brokers that sell information about consumers' income, credit history, credit score, or debt payments
to be consumer reporting agencies. As such, they'd be required to comply with the Fair Credit Reporting Act, or FCRA, a law limiting how these agencies can obtain and use the information provided in consumer reports. In other words, they'd be treated like credit bureaus and background check companies, which already have to comply with the FCRA.
And finally, Apple Music's 2024 Replay has rolled out to all users. The Spotify Rapped Like feature gives users a look back at their year in music by highlighting their top songs, artists, and albums they streamed. Replay also includes highlights such as listening streaks, the date when you first listened to your top song, artist, and album of the year, and a custom Replay 2024 playlist. As usual, Replay is accessible via the web. However, Apple brought the experience to mobile app users in iOS 18.1 or later.
