Canada's antitrust watchdog is suing Google for anti-competitive conduct in online advertising. In a statement, the Competition Bureau said it filed an application with the Competition Tribunal seeking an order that requires Google to sell two of its ad tech tools. It also is seeking a penalty from Google to promote compliance with Canada's competition laws. Google said the complaint, quote, ignores the intense competition where ad buyers and sellers have plenty of choice and we look forward to making our case in court, end quote.
The European Commission confirmed Thursday that it has ended its investigation into whether Luxembourg, the home of Amazon's EU headquarters, had granted it selective tax advantages. In 2017, the Commission concluded that Luxembourg gave Amazon illegal tax benefits worth €250 million, but EU judges annulled that decision on appeal.
The investigation remained open on paper for years, but the EU is now closing the loop and accepting that no tax rules were broken based on guidance provided by EU courts.
Meta plans to build a $10 billion, 40,000-plus kilometer fiber optic subsea cable extending around the world. Meta is the second largest driver of internet usage globally, accounting for 10% of all fixed and 22% of all mobile traffic. TechCrunch sources say Meta confirmed that the project is still in the early stages with more details to come in 2025. Meta will be the sole owner and user of the subsea cable, a first for the company representing a milestone for its infrastructure efforts.
Peacock announced during the halftime of Thursday's Miami Dolphins-Green Bay Packers game a first-of-its-kind immersive Madden NFL cast of the Houston Texans-Kansas City Chiefs game on Saturday, December 21st.
The data-powered live football experience will use Genius Sports' next-gen data and AI platform Genius IQ to combine real-time data insights with fully branded animations, delivering an immersive viewing experience. The Madden NFL cast will feature a dedicated commentary team, complete with play-by-play calls, graphic overlays, and color commentary.
Starlink, the satellite unit of SpaceX, has been ordered to cease operations in Nambia. The Communications Regulatory Authority of Nambia said on Thursday it has issued a cease-and-desist order to the satellite internet provider for operating in the country without a license.
Starlink has applied for a telecommunications service license in Nambia. However, the regulator has not issued the license as the application is still under review. The regulator also advised the public not to purchase Starlink terminal equipment or subscribe to its services as such activities are illegal in Nambia.
Competition Commission of India, or CCI, has initiated an inquiry into Google's restrictive policies for real money gaming platforms, prompted by a complaint from the online gaming platform Winzo, which claims discriminatory treatment. The CCI order stated, quote, By granting preferential treatment to select app categories, Google effectively creates a two-tier market where some developers are accorded superior access and visibility, while others are discriminated against and thus left with a competitive disadvantage, end quote.
A CCI official is expected to complete its investigation into the matter within 60 days. X could soon roll out labels for parody accounts. The social media platform is apparently developing a new label for parody or fan commentary accounts so they can more clearly identify themselves as such. If rolled out, parody accounts that adopt them will see a parody account label below the username on the profile page and on their post as well. This means that there is less chance of someone mixing up a post from a parody account with the real person's account.
And finally, Blue Sky replies will now default to appear by hotness as part of the social media app's 1.95 software update. With this release, you can now display replies by hotness, which weights liked replies that are more recent more heavily. The app's official Blue Sky account posted. Post reply settings also include sorting by oldest or newest replies, most liked, or a random setting labeled posters roulette.
