Bingzi's transition was inspired by her deep connection to nature, which began in childhood and was reinforced through her travels and work in media. Her first significant outdoor experience was a 15-day trek to the Everest Base Camp in Nepal, which profoundly impacted her. This led her to focus on outdoor activities and eventually learn about LNT principles, which she found applicable not only to outdoor adventures but also to everyday life.
The seven core principles of LNT are: 1) Plan Ahead and Prepare, 2) Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces, 3) Dispose of Waste Properly, 4) Leave What You Find, 5) Minimize Campfire Impact, 6) Respect Wildlife, and 7) Be Considerate of Other Visitors. These principles aim to reduce human impact on natural environments and promote sustainable outdoor practices.
The 'Broken Window Effect' in outdoor waste management refers to the tendency for people to continue littering in an area where they see existing trash. Bingzi explains that even small items like fruit peels, when discarded in nature, can lead to a chain reaction where others also leave their waste, creating larger environmental problems. This effect highlights the importance of adhering to LNT principles to prevent cumulative damage.
Female outdoor enthusiasts face unique challenges during menstruation, such as managing hygiene and waste in remote areas. Bingzi emphasizes the importance of planning and preparation, including carrying necessary supplies like painkillers, menstrual products, and sealable bags for waste disposal. She also stresses the need to communicate with companions and prioritize health and safety over pushing through discomfort.
LNT awareness in China is still in its early stages, with limited formal structures for education and certification. While the concept was introduced in Taiwan in 2007, mainland China lacks official LNT branches. Efforts are primarily driven by NGOs and workshops, but coverage remains limited. Bingzi notes that the rapid growth of outdoor activities post-pandemic has highlighted the need for better safety and environmental education to address issues like littering and ecological damage.
