Title: Black and White Bible, Black and Blue Wife Subtitle: My Story of Finding Hope After Domestic Abuse Author: Ruth A. Publisher's Summary: Ruth Tucker recounts a harrowing story of abuse at the hands of her husband, a well-educated, charming preacher no less, in hope that her story will help other women caught in a cycle of domestic violence and offer a balanced biblical approach to counter such abuse for pastors and counselors. Weaving together her shocking story, stories of other women, and powerful stories of husbands who truly have demonstrated Christ's love to their wives, with reflection on biblical, theological, historical, and contemporary issues surrounding domestic violence, she makes a compelling case for mutuality in marriage and helps women and men become more aware of potential dangers in a doctrine of male headship.

Members Reviews: May God have mercy on us all! A disturbing and moving account. It has served me as a wake up call. I encourage all who still believe that some sort of male hierarchy is supported in the Scriptures should read this book. May God have mercy on all of us and move many many more men to abandon this dangerous and un-biblical interpretation of Scripture. May we also be inspired to discern more deeply the quality of the marriages within our sphere of influence and be on the look out for abuse that is so often so well hidden. Thank you, Ruth, for the courage that you have shown in writing this very painful and personal account.

Breath taking Ruth tells her personal story of marital abuse. It is hair raising and intensely sad. There is no doubt that her first husbandâs behavior was far less than the love of Christ for his church. The book raises many valuable questions which must be answered. Her book is not intended to be a complete answer to Complementarianism. She has written much about Complementarianism and Egalitarianism elsewhere. However, whether one agrees with her main contention, it is worth considering carefully: Are there those in the church who use male headship as a cover up for abuse? and Does the Complementarian view of male headship in marriage engender spousal abuse.

a hybrid I can imagine that lots of people will find this useful. It was too much of a hybrid for me -- not really a memoir, not really exegesis, and not really a review of the subject of complementarianism. It was bits of all of those things. A bit more focus would have been helpful.

Well Done Well written, good look at what goes on behind closed doors. Domestic Violence happens everywhere at every socioeconomic level as well as any and all educational and professional levels. I appreciated the author's candid revelations of her experience, both in her intimate partner relationship and her professional relationships. I'm a survivor and I am a director at an agency that helps victim/survivors find options for help and healing, no matter where they are in their journey or what abilities they have or don't have. The faith community needs to be educated about this issue, hopefully this book will assist in opening dialogue.

Powerful Baby Boomers beware - we thought we had come so far but Ruth challenges us to keep moving towards God's ideals.
