In a piece for IndigenousX published 27 August 2020, Mineng Noongar social work academic Jacynta Krakouer stated that "Now is the time for critical race conversations in social work." Krakouer discussed the colonial origins of the field, and a need for changes in the way that it is taught and researched- particularly in terms of disrupting the overwhelming whiteness of those in positions of authority in academia. For this episode I am joined by Cin and Inez, both of whom are students currently enrolled in social work degrees at different universities and in different states in so-called Australia. Both Cin and Inez share their motivations for entering social work, experiences of studying social work as students from marginalised backgrounds, critiques of the discipline, and hopes for transformation. This is the first of a two-part series featuring students, academics and practitioners reflecting on social work, race and colonisation.
