The 'Battle of the Surfaces' was an exhibition match designed to determine who was the best tennis player by having Roger Federer, the king of grass, play against Rafael Nadal, the king of clay, on a hybrid court with half grass and half clay.
The idea was conceived by Pablo Del Campo, an Argentinian creative entrepreneur and tennis fan, who envisioned a hybrid tennis court to challenge the best players on their preferred surfaces.
The grass on the hybrid court struggled to grow indoors, resulting in dead patches and holes when balls landed. Additionally, the court became infested with worms, forcing the organizers to implement a last-minute plan B using a golf green to salvage the match.
Rafael Nadal won the match in a tiebreak, showcasing his dominance on clay and grass. The match was regarded as one of the best exhibition matches in tennis history.
