Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss Waxwork. The feature film debut of writer-director Anthony Hickox, this homage to horror films is bloody and funny in equal measure. A gaggle of high school students investigate a local waxwork run by the erudite David Lincoln (David Warner). The student body is about to run afoul of scarcity.
Waxwork has a paper thin premise to hang a plot on, but somehow it all works. The gore effects really revel in their squishiness, the variety of waxwork scenarios that come to life show a healthy measure of creativity, and it never overstays its welcome. A Marquis de Sade sequence is very strong despite lacking nudity.
Mat enjoys video game history YouTube videos from The Gaming Historian. Thrasher has been on a documentary kick with the BBC Blue Planet 2 series.
