Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher talk about the big budget live-action film The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy from 2005. Garth Jennings made his directorial debut with this sci-fi comedy. After drinking a load of pints with his best friend Ford Prefect (Mos Def), Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) learns Earth's true origin story. All the while, he tries to rekindle a flirtation with Tricia McMillan (Zooey Deschanel). The late Douglas Adams spent much of the end of his life struggling to get this story made into a fancy Hollywood motion picture. Ironically, his premature death helped kick this flick into high gear. After budget cuts and Jim Carrey dropping out of the project (he would have played Zaphod Beeblebrox), what we have onscreen is a movie at war with itself. Its adapting a radio play/book/BBC series that's short on plot and long on character; to compensate, the film attempts to goose things up with an actual villain (!!) and shoot-em-up scenes that contribute to the movie's bloated 109 minute run-time.
